Luxe all-suite sleep with dramatic Aegean Sea views, a Six Senses spa and award-winning amenities

The Lowdown

Set on an idyllic peninsula overlooking Mirabello Bay, the Aegean Sea and the Sitia Mountains, this luxe Cretan getaway has been on the jetset circuit since it opened its doors in 2003. Designed by Greek architect Spyros Kokotos with the natural beauty of the island in mind, the 53 suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, cavernous living areas, stone façades and honey-hued wood furnishings. Privacy is paramount, and many suites feature private seawater pools and direct access to the beach. The dining options include Calypso, an upscale French restaurant; Koh, a waterfront eatery that serves pan-Asian cuisine; and Odysseas, which offers fresh fish and Greek favorites. Pay a visit to the award-winning Six Senses spa for a soak in the authentic Turkish hammam, or indulge in the Royal Elixir body scrub and facial, which uses locally grown Greek products. For an evening of family fun, reserve a private viewing of your favorite movie at the hotel’s 50-seat IMAX surround-sound theater. Rise early to hit the links at the Porto Elounda Golf Club, a private nine-hole, par-3 course with sea and mountain views and a fully stocked pro shop to meet every golfer’s needs.

In the Area

This small fishing village on Crete’s east coast has drawn big name celebrities (Lady Gaga, U2) and royals (including Saudi Arabia’s) thanks to its pristine sandy shores and hideaway appeal. Tuck into traditional Mediterranean cuisine such as grilled sea bream or slow-roasted leg of lamb, fresh from the local butcher, at the charming seafront restaurant Lotus Eaters. Tour a labyrinth of tunnels and demolished buildings at Spinalonga, a tiny island that quarantined lepers until the late 1950s. Devoted readers make the pilgrimage to Spinalonga eager to explore the place that inspired Victoria Hislop’s bestseller The Island. Dig up Minoan history at the Palace of Knossos, a 150,000-square-foot compound that was built around 1950 BC. After a full day of sightseeing, feast on Cretan rabbit drizzled in honey, swordfish tartare, and a side of sea breezes at the award-winning Old Mill restaurant, located at sister property Hotel Elounda Mare.

Overpriced, worn down and not six star

We had high expectations because this was a six star resort. The service, responsive as and upkeep was well below what I would have expected for a four star hotel. All ‘included amenities were broken or not well maintained including the gym, the ping pong tables and the outdoor pool and jacuzzi. All other things had high costs attached that I would have expected to be included (eg tennis incurred an extra hourly charge even if you brought your own rackets, sea / water sports equipment was all expensive, food was mediocre quality and very overpriced).

Our stay at Elounda Peninsula Resort was amazing. The greeting staff were so welcoming and gave us an informative overview of the facilities without being exhaustive or pushy. They are very proud of their resort. The resort is beautiful with many amenities and amazing views. Our room was perfect and immaculate. The staff was very courteous. Food options are diverse and delicious. Poolside/beach service was excellent. We snorkeled and went jet skiing. The poolside bar was great and the service personnel were very friendly and service was exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Amazing holidays in a very luxurious and friendly 5 star hotel!

The Elouda Peninsula offers great and comfortable accomodation (most of the suites with private pool) and a lot of privacy in a lovely surrounding.
The staff, especiallly Elli from the guest relations, made our stay as comfortable as possible. The staff in general is well trained, efficient and very friendly.
The food was just delicious and especially the "Calypso" and the "Old Mill" were the fine cuisine restaurants were every dinner was a highlight of its own! We can highly recommend these two; however the food in the other restaurants was great as well.
The sea was cristal clear and very inviting to swim in it. The beach had a lot of privacy and was excellent to relax.
All over, our stay can be rated as the perfect holiday which we enjoyed very much and thoroughly.
We can only recommend the Elounda Penisula as the perfect location to spend a great Holiday!
