Elounda Mare Hotel is every inch a five-star. This luxe seafront hideaway bears the distinction of being the only Relais & Chateaux hotel in Crete, and it’s not hard to conclude that it stands out in plenty of other ways as well. For one, the hotel boasts its own sandy beach, with spectacular views over Mirabello Bay. Offering sun loungers and umbrellas, as well as a range of watersports, the property leaves it up to you to decide how to make the most of this postcard-perfect stretch of shore.
But it’s not all sea, sunshine and sumptuousness here (although, of course, you’ll have those in ample doses). There are also the incredible accommodations, which include bungalows featuring their own private plunge pools – in case the hotel’s secluded location, tucked away from the city of Elounda, isn’t private enough. Topping it all off, there’s also a sensational spa, a slew of first-rate dining options, a smattering of chic bars and an incredible golf club. Who says you can’t have it all?
Rooms and bungalows
The Main Building Sea View Twin room measures in at a spacious 323 square feet and includes a sitting area, but the star of the show is the glorious sea view, which you can enjoy from a private balcony or terrace. Luxurious marble bathrooms feature a tub, shower and audio sound. To really up the luxe factor, stay in a Deluxe bungalow with a private pool. Slightly larger than the Main Building rooms, these dreamy spaces offer a comfortable sitting area and a spectacular sea view from the furnished private garden.
With seven superb restaurants and five unique bars, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to wining and dining options. Don’t worry about choosing between dining under the shade of olive trees or with breathtaking views of Mirabello, or choosing between traditional Cretan dishes or cuisine from further afield – you have plenty of time to try everything. However, we imagine that you’ll spend your evenings in the same way regardless: signature cocktails served at the water’s edge, with an incredible view of the rising moon.
The sward-winning Six Senses Spa is located at the resort’s sister property, Porto Elounda Golf & Spa Retreat, and reachable via a complimentary shuttle service. This world-class facility provides a truly relaxing and revitalizing experience, through many forms of holistic healing to balance the senses. Its unrivaled range of signature treatments focuses on health, beauty, pampering, stress reduction and recuperation using pure, natural and environmentally friendly products. The luxuriously appointed spa overlooks a spectacular expanse of the Aegean Sea, adding a very real and natural sense of relaxation.
Secluded on Mirabello Bay on the coast of Crete, the resort is tucked peacefully away from the buzzing town of Elounda. The hotel boasts a private sandy beach, where you can make use of the hotel’s sun loungers and umbrellas, while the Sea Sports Center offers water-skiing and scuba-diving lessons. Other watersports, such as wind-surfing, canoeing and wake-boarding, are available.
How to Get There
Once again thank you to the whole team at the magnificent Elounda Mare hotel in Crete. We had a fabulous time - relaxing; world class service; delicious food and fantastic wine - we will see you again soon! D&A Francis.
We stayed in a villa with one bedroom with pool overlooking the sea. It is not a modern design but it has atmosphere and character. Modern bathroom with shower. The rooms are cleaned regularly by friendly staff. Good selection of different restaurants. My favourite was Koh an Asian restaurant at its sister hotel, but the Old Mill and Yacht club were very nice too. Nice beach area. The local towns are close by with lots of good restaurants and hotel staff made several good recommendations of where to eat. We played golf on the par 3 9 hole course and i went diving at offsite dive school Pelagos, who are very good. My wife and I will definitely go back...hopefully again in 2018!
My husband and I recently stayed at Elounda Mare for three nights on our trip to Greece. The property was very impressive, and our room (bungalow with private pool) was amazing. Since we were doing a long trip to many different parts of Greece, we decided that this stay would be our "relaxing spot," so we didn't venture offsite our entire time. The days were filled with visiting the beach and enjoying the pool, which was plenty for us. I also went to the spa (highly recommend a visit), and my husband played golf (basic but fine). The food was a little pricey, especially drinks, but it was good.
Many reviews mention the mattress and bedding as problems, but that was not our experience. The shower was a little small but still fine.
Overall, it was a wonderful trip, and we look forward to coming back!
We spent three nights at Elounda Mare to end our Greece vacation and absolutely loved it! The staff was overly accommodating and bent over backwards to meet our every need. When they found out that we would be departing before the normal breakfast time on our last day, they even offered to set out a continental breakfast earlier without us even asking! Most patrons were adults, but they made kids very welcome as well. We splurged on a room with a private pool and could not have been happier. It was large enough to accommodate a family of 5 (there were two bedrooms and a main livingroom) and the staff kindly upgraded us to a 3 bedroom which meant that we had more than ample space for everyone. The views from the pool deck (and the rooms!) were amazing! The beach was also nice and not overly crowded or chaotic. The restaurants on site and at their sister hotels were great and offered a variety of fares and a great view of the water. Room service menu also included a children's menu. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and especially to families!
This place is very welcoming and comfortable. We enjoyed meals at each of the restaurants, some of which have certain nights where children are not permitted so you can dine in peace. The bungalow we rented had beautiful views, and the services throughout the establishment were prompt. I would HIGHLY recommend visiting the Spa and if you're going as a couple, get the Sense of Love package if you can swing it. The restaurant services and bartenders were all very eager to please. We especially loved Manos and George's personalities.
The only downsides:
Mosquitoes. No wait- ninja mosquitoes. I only saw a few and yet I would wind up covered in bites. It's not ideal having to drench yourself in OFF if you want to remain itch free. The room comes with an electric repellant device but it did not work very well.
If you're big into cocktails, this place only has a few of the simple ones, and things you might think are easily known (Gin gimlet) need to be explained out. That part isn't so bad but at the restaurants we felt slightly pressured to order wine or champagne. I don't believe you can order one glass of wine- one night I thought I had done that, but they put the bottle next to our table and kept filling my glass. The bill came and the entire bottle was charged. Just wish I would have known that ahead of time.
Also if you order things from any bar, you have to sign for each order individually rather than running up a "tab" and signing off/tipping on the entire thing. If you spent 4 hours at the beach and had three drinks and a snack, you'd have to sign and tip each time you ordered. It doesn't sound like much, but since you have to scribble down a bunch of information each time, it kind of kills the relaxing flow you might have had going on.
I also do not recommend going before June. Low 70s was just a touch too cold to enjoy our private pool or the water for very long, but that, I concede, is my poor planning.
