A five-star stay at a Small Luxury Hotel of the World, with breakfast, a dinner and perks for longer stays

The Lowdown

It’s no wonder that Crete is the stuff of myths and legends; this idyllic Greek island is home to snow-capped mountains that loom over sun-drenched beaches, modern hotels perched in ancient hilltop villages and international golf courses nestled next to ancient olives groves. This is a destination that’s got all the essentials of a relaxing island vacation – tranquility, culture and beautiful scenery – in spades.
The five-star Castello Boutique Resort & Spa is the perfect hideaway from which to experience Crete for yourself. Perched amid tropical gardens in the traditional seaside village of Sissi, this newly built Small Luxury Hotel of the World also ticks all the boxes of a serene and sunny getaway. There’s a freshwater swimming pool, an excellent Mediterranean restaurant, a poolside bar and a spa (complete with a hammam and sauna), which means switching off and living the good life is easy.

Rooms and suites

Superior rooms are awash with natural light, refreshing décor and plenty of space – 323 square feet, to be exact. The two-story Junior suites are even larger, at 538 square feet, and include an upstairs bedroom and a downstairs living room.

Elea Restaurant is sleek and spacious, with spectacular views of the resort’s tropical gardens and the mountains beyond. Dishing up delicious Mediterranean fare using locally sourced ingredients, Elea caters to all tastes. Aroma Bar is the perfect place for a sunset tipple, serving refreshing cocktails and other drinks by the stunning freshwater pool. Piano nights and other entertainments are regular features at this elegant resort.

Callista Spa takes relaxation to another level, boasting a massage parlor offering a wide range of therapeutic treatments, a hammam, a sauna, a hair salon and a relaxation room.

Castello Boutique Resort & Spa is located in the town of Sissi, on the northern coast of Crete, offering accessible seclusion. The sea is just steps from the resort, so you can have the sand between your toes in no time. The charming village center, with its unique boutique shops and little tavernas, is just a very short walk, providing the perfect opportunity for an afternoon stroll.

Good, could be better

Most importantly, fantastic staff, very professional and friendly. Rooms were spotless and we were made to feel very welcome. Good sport to strike into the port but away from the busiest parts. However, we would expect more from a 5* resort. The towels and robes were very thin, the ‘fitness suite’ was small, dirty and most of the equipment was either damaged or rusting. The restaurant was good, but definitely not 5* and not worth the price, especially considering the value to be found in off site restaurants. Spa experience was ok. But we had a good time.

Excellent staff and hotel

We went two weeks before the end of season in Oct and cannot praise the staff and the hotel highly enough. From the moment you arrive at the hotel to the moment you leave (using the free taxi service to and from the airport) they are so friendly and helpful.

We made use of the special dining experience one night, with your own place out in the gardens for a lobster meal. A bit expensive but well worth it.

The reception staff also allowed us to use their computer/office to try and book Glastonbury tickets on the morning they went on sale (failed!), very helpful again.

We don't normally make use of the Spa facilities at hotels but we were glad we did on this occasion.

Would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Stayed here for a week in early October and fully enjoyed the experience. Small and adults only, the quiet ambience was just what we needed. The staff, without exception, were always eager to please, without being intrusive. Although it was getting towards the end of a long season for them, we detected no slackening of very high standards of customer care. Our room (top floor in central position overlooking the pool) was very clean, large, and well-equipped - a great location. There was a slight complication with our room on arrival, but after a very short wait, it was quickly remedied.(and with a generous gesture of dinner vouchers). We loved Sissi and would certainly stay at Castello again.

Excellent staff

The staff at this boutique hotel were excellent in their attention to guests without being over the top. The hotel is where we stayed not the village. The facilities were good without being boutique. The restaurant staff were excellent but the food too varied to make it possible to be good. Most of the food was therefore average with a couple of excellent exceptions. The spa was in need of some TLC as well. The staff made the stay very positive.

Very genuine and friendly staff

Just back from a 5 night stay in this hotel with my friend. No matter what time of day or night I found the staff to be so lovely. Nothing was too much trouble for them, literally. We were given a drink on arrival and a towel to cleanse our hands, this was close to midnight. The hotel was also clean. However some areas of the hotel could do with updating, the gym facilities are very small and one of the pieces of equiptment was out of use.. The spa had a lovely atmosphere and again all the staff without exception were friendly and welcoming. I had a couple of treatments whilst I was there and I think they are slightly over priced for what you receive. Overall I would recommend this hotel and I would absolutely stay here again.
