While Australia is famed for its natural wonders, in buzzy Broadbeach on Queensland’s Gold Coast, manmade attractions are also a major draw. The high-rise Sofitel, with its 296 rooms, two pools, and access to a casino and shopping mall, is perfect for those who like to be at the center of the action. Pared down rooms in white and brown allow the city or Pacific Ocean views to pop, with all the amenities you’d expect of a major 5 star resort, like marble bathrooms and flatscreen TVs. There are two dining options, both with a sophisticated urban vibe; TC’s sports bar offers a more casual ambiance plus a host of indoor games.
In the Area
The Gold Coast boasts some of Australia’s most renowned surfing beaches like the aptly named Surfers Paradise; beginners can get a taste for the waves at the Cheyne Horan Surf School. The area is also known for its Humpback Whale sightings; boats like Spirit of the Gold Coast offer half day tours. Kids will get a kick out of the region’s theme parks like Sea World, Warner Brothers’ Movie World, and Wet ‘n’ Wild Gold Coast, while animal lovers will adore Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the perfect place to spot kangaroos, koalas, and crocs.
How to Get There
This hotel is very average for Sofitel, and probably the worst Sofitel that I have stayed in. The location of the hotel is very good; you are on the doorstep to some of the Gold Coast's best restaurants, tourist attractions and the Convention Centre.
Nevertheless, the hotel is quite dated and needs an uplift. We stayed in a Superior Ocean View Room on the top floor, which had great views. While the bed was very extremely comfortable (and there is a pillow menu), the bathrooms have mold growing in them and there is very poor water pressure.
I think the hotel staff try their best, and are helpful and courteous. There is a free shoe shine service, and the breakfast is very good (custom omelettes available, coffee made on order and even a novel cold press coffee tap serving Byron Bay organic coffee). However, there are some inconsistencies in hotel processes. For example, housekeeping did not always stock everything up (often missed things on some days, but replaced them on other days), which meant that we had to call Reception to ask for things. In addition, there was some inconsistency around billing (my card was charged without my explicit authorization). Furthermore, I had to wait a very long time to check, (despite having gold status with Accor) because reception was understaffed at the time of my check-in (only one person on the counter).
These are not things that one would expect from a Sofitel, and I hope that this hotel improves in the future.
Sofitel Broadbeach is a great hotel, very clean and located in a good area close to shops.
My only negative would be the older staff working front of house that have no personality and come across rude.
Staying at the Sofitel is always a treat for us. We stayed for 3 nights for a conference. I would have to say that the staff were a real stand out for this Sofitel. Every single person we had contact with was amazing and went above and beyond. Thankyou!!! And of course it goes without saying that our room was fantastic, spacious and comfortable. I loved having a separate shower. I hope to stay at this Sofitel again.
My wife & I stayed here partly pleasure and also a conference. Great location some bad reviews which I couldn't give much credence to however experiences are personal. The staff were very pleasant and helpful the whole place was exceptionally clean and two very good restaurants. Given the location I thought it was value for money. They had three pools with increasing temperatures which was great. Quick walk to the conference centre and huge shopping mall PK.
Our recent two night stay at the Sofitel Broadbeach was up to Sofitels high standards.Service from the Sofitel team was above expectations, at all levels. The location of the facility is ideal, being handy to conference venues and airport, not to mention the cream of Gold Coast restaurants. Probably the only drawback is the principle in-house restaurant is closed Tuesday to Thursday evenings, which nice coincided with our stay. The alternative in-house restaurant is of high standard, but with only a very limited menu.
