How to Get There
My wife and I have stayed at the De Vere Water Park hotel many times in the past, although the most recent was a few years ago.
For anyone reading this and considering the hotel for the first time, it's in a stunning location! Right on the lakes in the Cotswolds. It has a large conference centre next door so is a very busy place for people arriving and a large restaurant called the Boathouse further down. It is also a very large hotel on a large site.
Rather than recap it all, i will summarise our stay and a few things.
Lovely welcome from the lady on the desk. We were very pleased to be back which is always a good sign for the staff and this lady seemed to really enjoy bouncing off our own enthusiasm.
The reception/brasserie area had a makeover last summer, more colours, furniture and features added and it's a lovely place to walk into and see.
In one corner of the hotel, near the main desk the hotel have introduced a pantry area. This has very nice locally sourced chocolate, fudge, fresh pastries and other bits and pieces you can buy. A great idea!
Room. We booked a standard double room which on this visit was just down from reception. A nice change to having to walk miles with our luggage. On entering the room, it was obvious this has also had money spent on it and had a makeover. The decoration is to a very high standard. A nice cupboard and shelf area near the door with a lovely fridge. (The milk pots provided were also in the fridge along with sparkling water). The rooms have large glass windows and ours had a door onto the decking outside. The large bed was firm but comfortable with lots of pillows and cushions, a huge modern lcd television was up on the wall and there was a large modern bathroom. The room telephone was also a nice black classic dial phone. It all fitted with the design of the room and for a standard double was very very nice.
Spa. Firstly, since our last visit, they've changed the rules so guests can only visit the pool/spa facilities at certain times. Early in the morning and in the evening. The other times are for people who are willing to pay £15 to use it. (If i was local, actually £15 to use a stunning spa like this, isn't too bad. Not on a regular basis but as a treat it would be well worth it). As a guest however it's a shame but i understand it was done to avoid overcrowding and for safety which you can understand. We used the Spa facility between 8 and 9 pm and then between 8 and 9 am the following morning. On both occasions, i think we shared the space with roughly 6 or 7 people. Plenty of room and no issues at all, so i could happily say despite the restriction there were no issues with this at all. Plus, did i mention it was a stunning spa facility! Love it!
Restaurant. Previously we have eaten out at the adjoining Boathouse for an evening meal and it was very nice but unfortunately it closes at 6pm on a sunday. We have also previously paid for breakfast in the actual hotel restaurant. (Usual hot/cold buffet). As this is now £12 per person, we decided we'd probably not get very good value from it and ate out later on once we had checked out. From what we could tell the restaurant was busy in the evening and for breakfast and it is worth booking in advance if you are staying on a weekend.
In the morning, there was a large conference inside the hotel with tables set out within the reception/brasserie area and lots of people around. This adds a lot more noise but only really in this area. It isn't an issue but just shows how busy the hotel can be even on a Monday.
We did take a walk around the decking outside and look out at the lake. Lovely peaceful place to walk and spend time, but the decking needs some tlc. A lot of the wooden planks need nailing down again or replacing and the decking could all do with a brush of paint to protect it for many years to come.
Overall, this is a fantastic place to stay. We love visiting here. The improvements inside were really nice and modern. The spa is one of my favourites from any hotel I've visited. My wife said the bed was maybe a touch too firm but it was still very comfortable and the room a delight to spend time in. The restaurant / brasserie are pretty expensive but typical of this level of hotel. Definitely note the Spa times are restricted for guests if you are considering visiting and there are other local places to eat out. It is a great place to stay and i would highly recommend it.
Lovely setting but let down by a poor hotel.
Small, very uncomfortable beds and pillows. Had a halls of residence feel about it; long corridors that sound travels so far.
Bizarre arrangement with the gym/ spa. Guests can’t use the facilities until 5pm without paying £15! I was seriously upset about this!
After a problem with our room and less than great service the first time round we returned this weekend for our complimentary stay. And it was great. The staff were attentive and helpful. And the room was nice with a view. The spa is a hidden gem definitely worth getting a treatment. I’d go back just for that! Nice place with great places nearby to eat in cirenchester town.
Thank you :)
I am sorry to say we had lots of problems at this 4 star hotel. Firstly the guy in the spa tried to tell us not to use the spa as it was crowded? At the Boathouse it took 45 minutes to get our main meal? The main problem was the night we went for our main meal on Saturday night, the hotel had not registered the booking for 6 people. This was sorted but my wife was very upset her celebration had so many problems. This is not a 4 star hotel and overcharge.
A very lovely setting on the lake.
Check in reception were very helpful and welcoming.
Hotel reception and grounds immaculate and modern. Plush foyer and bar area. Loved the Pantry where you could buy local fudge, crisps drinks etc for the room.
Lovely walking around the outside on the boardwalks albeit some of the boards coming up causing a walk hazard and I cockled over one and hurt my knee. They just need some attention screwing them down again. It was pleasant to walk around and see and hear the ducks and birds on the lake.
I booked a standard room and was very surprised as it was large airy, clean with a large bathroom and a balcony. Overall very happy with room, especially good value, with exception of a few stains on the carpets otherwise would have given five stars.
Breakfast plentiful and despite being busy it was replenished constantly. Very Good service. Just outside lovely to have deck chairs etc to sit and look out over the lake.
Overall a pleasant stay and will certainly return.
