Located on the edge of the beautiful, leafy Sternschanze Park in central Hamburg, Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg is a rehabilitated 19th-century water tower – a striking, soaring structure of red brick and glass. With interiors of exposed brick, polished wood and smooth metal surfaces, this is a stylish hotel boasting chic bedrooms distributed over 17 floors, with excellent views over the park and city.
Guests have the use of the sauna, solarium and fitness area with exercise equipment within the state-of-the-art fitness centre. There are a range of sports to enjoy in Sternschanze Park too. Round off a day’s sightseeing in Hamburg with a classic or signature cocktail in the CAVE Bar, located in the atmospheric vaults of the water tower.

Please note that there is a city tax of €3.21 per person per day for a single room and €2.14 for double room, to be paid directly to the hotel.
How to Get There
Hotel is in a super location - we always like to stay just that bit out of the central tourist area but with good transport links. It was ideal - very close to train station but you can easily spend an evening out in the area - plenty of independent restaurants and bars - and shops for daytime too. We are walkers and you can walk easily into main St Paul's area in 20mins or Rathaus in 40. One point - they'd cleaned room etc but not provided refresh of tea/coffee so needed a couple of reminders. Fridge, safe and hairdryer in room.
I was staying in this hotel for 3 nights for business purposes with a group of 9 German colleagues. Some of us arrived one or two days earlier, some (like me) therefore left a day later than the rest.
The experiences started when we were helped to check in by a person who hardly spoke any English, and according to my partner, who speaks German, very bad German too. So making him understand that I am part of the company group, named X, was already a challenge. But he tried his best...
Parking in the garage by the way costs 25 euro's a day!!
Our room was on the 4-th floor. I was surprised to see dirty stains on the carpet, and chipped off furniture. The window blinds were not what they once probably were (like what? 5-6 years ago?, the hotel is only that old). Everything looked quite shabby for a 4-star hotel with so many amazing reviews). The shower was fine. The bed - reasonable, but I would want to stay on it longer than 3 days. There is little conditioning in the room, it's really warm, so we opened the windows, to let in some fresh air. Unfortunately, the noise from the park and from the trains is very disturbing.
The breakfast made it all up, I thought. Good food, good tea and coffee. The restaurant is a bit noisy though when it gets busy, but if you are lucky, you can get a place a little away from everybody.
I think I would not even bothered to write this review if not my leaving experience. Saturday morning, about 10.30. Every elevator which arrives is full of people with their luggage. We waited about 15 minutes to be able to get downstairs with our luggage... Once down near reception, there was a long queue. But.. this things happen... However, when I starte to check out, there was a bigger problem. I was requested to pay everything myself, even though my colleaques requested more than once (i was the witness of it a day before) to send the bill to company, and charge individual persons. ap But.. Strangely enough, they couldn't find anything about my company (strange, because I didn't book the hotel personally!). Name of the company? it's 'X' - I say. Looking... Nope, we can't find it sorry, OK, what shall we do then? Please pay it yourself. After a short argument, I saw another reception lady, which I remember, was talking to our colleagues a day before (about not charging personally). Very stressed and grumpy (she turned out to be the supervisor) she told me she was too busy and I had to wait. I waited 5 minutes, and asked her to help me. She barked at me, like I was a cat, and continued to help another customer. I decided to connect with the colleague who did the reservations, and also was the director of our company. At that moment he was at business meeting, but happily called me back. I explained the situation, and asked the lady behind the counter to take the phone. She refused, because she couldn't change the situation anyway, she said. I would need to ask her supervisor. Fine with me! Ask her yourself, as your supervisor decided I was not a client worth while helping. Eventually, "the supervisor-lady" got on my phone. Five minutes later, she gave me my phone back without a word. Well, I asked? Did you manage to find the company name? May I go now, and be sure that my cc won't be charged my? Really annoyed and grumpy, she barked at me that she can't remember everybody, and she never saw my face, and lots of other excuses why they couldn't find me and our company in the system. No appologies, no excuses, nothing. I wonder how all this would have finished if my colleague couldn't call me back!
I was glad to leave this place. Annoyed and disappointed. Never again for our company (who used to be a regular customer too!!!), never for me personally.
We went here with a couple of friends for a two-day party in Hamburg.
the staff was very friendly, the bar staff was very nice.
The Hotel and the rooms are good, the building is quite interesting.
Overall a very good stay.
A weekend break in Hamburg for my wife and myself at the end of October.
Arriving on a Sunday afternoon, we were slightly amazed to find our reservation was in our name, but, surprise, surprise! They had our home address as Harare in Sub-Saharan Africa.
No matter; our room was top rate and very comfortable. Porter service with our bags again was first class. Clever touch, the thermostat on the A/C is set at a comfortable 20C, but variable if desired. The shower room s vast and well-equipped.
We booked dinner in the hotel restaurant, an international menu with delicious Swiss extras, especially the desserts! An excellent choice of single malt Scotch whiskies was on offer, but the prices are somewhat high. Beware!
We were delighted to be served by a charming and competent young man who said he had learned his English in his home country of the Dominican Republic.
A sumptuous buffet breakfast is served every morning until late, but I had to complain about the bacon, which was not kept hot. But, nevertheless, a remarkable choice of breakfast dishes. Well worth making this your meal of the day.
Room service was good and no problem in obtaining extra towels or pillows.
Only the TV was a problem, as not one of the listed international channels was available. For English speaking guests, this could be a minus point.
If you come by car, use the underground secure parking facility (at 50 EUR per day, a good investment).
At only 15 minutes by taxi (approx. 15 EUR) from the City Centre and harbour area, the Hotel is set in a former water Tower, surrounded by a park.
The location is great, the building is interesting and that’s all.
For the ranking of this hotel and the price I’m very surprised how bad is my experience is during a business trip of 10 nights mainly caused by a bad customer service.
During all this period I was completely anonymous and nobody recognized me one day to another. I was going out to smoke a cigarette from time to time and I had to face the grumpy reception lady maybe upset to see me that regularly. Talking about the reception the staff unhelpful, grumpy and close from rude. I felt like a child who did something wrong and didn’t dare asking any questions (in German I can’t imagine in any other language). They charge the hotel one day after arrival on the wrong credit card even if they told me they won’t to “avoid early leavers” and “it’s in the contract” which is wrong. They don’t want to help and charge the right credit card... of course.
Talking about the facilities, there is a long escalator when entering the hotel and it was almost every day off which makes you climbing the entrance in the morning. The elevators can’t cope with the guest numbers and one of them was out of service during my whole stay. If you fancy doing some sport, the equipment of the fitness room is dilapidated and rusty.
The superior room was correct but after 10 days my back is broken. The bed quality was terrible.
The breakfast is good as well the quality of the food at the restaurant.
For all these reasons I would not recommend this hotel.
