Located on the edge of the beautiful, leafy Sternschanze Park in central Hamburg, Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg is a rehabilitated 19th-century water tower – a striking, soaring structure of red brick and glass. With interiors of exposed brick, polished wood and smooth metal surfaces, this is a stylish hotel boasting chic bedrooms distributed over 17 floors, with excellent views over the park and city.
Guests have the use of the sauna, solarium and fitness area with exercise equipment within the state-of-the-art fitness centre. There are a range of sports to enjoy in Sternschanze Park too. Round off a day’s sightseeing in Hamburg with a classic or signature cocktail in the CAVE Bar, located in the atmospheric vaults of the water tower.
Good to know
Please note that there is a city tax of €3.21 per person per day for a single room and €2.14 for double room, to be paid directly to the hotel.
How to Get There
First, the good. The building itself is stunning and the conversion to an hotel has been executed superbly. The slightly strange layout (entrance tunnel) only adds to the charm. All of the staff were also excellent - really helpful and courteous. Breakfast selection was excellent and the quality of what was on offer was good. The room itself was fairly standard, albeit an unusual shape. The bed was comfortable enough. Had dinner in the (busy) restaurant on the first night and it was good, although the service was rather slow.
Two negatives that potential guests should note - there is no effective way of cooling the room, apart from opening a window. There is the "sustainable water-based climate system", but this does not cool the room. Thankfully the windows open, but the housekeeping staff usually close them and they need to be closed at night as many of the rooms face the railway, which brings noise. The weather was not particularly warm during my stay, so opening the windows kept the room temperature comfortable. It is disingenuous and deceitful for the hotel website to state that all rooms include air-conditioning, when they don't. Second, at night the approach to the hotel is somewhat deserted with no other buildings nearby, which some might find off-putting. The hotel representatives in replies to previous reviews have said that there is nothing to fear, but the fact remains that those who are easily concerned will find walking back at night intimidating. Arriving by taxi is fine as the taxi goes to the door of the hotel. Very convenient location for Hamburg Messe.
I travel to Hamburg for business reasons often. This time I stayed in the Mövenpick hotel.
On a typical business trip I normally ask from a hotel: a comfortable bed, a working shower, a good hairdryer and sometimes an iron.
This hotel failed on all 3/4:
-bed was ok
-horrible shower - hot water takes very long to come, than is coming and going, with in between splashes of boiling water, I almost burned myself (very dangerous for kids)
-horrible hairdryer - super heavy and super slow...has anyone from the hotel ever used one of their hairdryers? It’s a torture.
-iron - it took me 3 calls and more than 1h to get the iron in my room and then they brought me a a dirty ironing board which was not usable.
You can find much better business hotels for this price in Hamburg. Avoid this one!
I couldn't be more pleased with my choice of Hotel! What a unique place, welcomed via the long entry/escalator, the wall adorned with pictures of the reconstruction (it was a former Water Tower), water sounds and accompanying lighting, and the occasional distant sound of a Foghorn. The place couldn't say 'Hamburg' better if it tried. Helpful staff on check-in, and a room that said 'welcome' with its warm lighting and decor. Comfortable bed. Clean facilities. A pleasant change from the sterile type of hotel so common in this day and age.
