How to Get There
This hotel was a bit of a mixture for me
The location is excellent and the breakfast is very good.
We arrived early and they had a room ready which was great.
The hotel is a bit dated once you are away from the main reception & the grand staircase area.
The pool is nice although the changing rooms are small. The pool is fine for relaxing. it is not good if you want to do some 'laps' because it is circular so there is no clear route for those wanting to go 'up & down'.
Our room was not in a good location on the first floor. To reach this you need the lift to the second floor. Walk around the hotel and get a small lift down to the first floor. This really does make you seem like you are in the basement. (The balcony is not much use down there) It is quite a long trek back to the main part of the hotel.
On a plus it is quiet down there!
On the second day one of the staff did tell us we could get out (but not in) via a fire exit on the ground floor which led to the main road - this was really useful.
The reception staff are pleasant but seem fairly new and were not very informative - Indeed their directions to the room were not accurate and I had previously asked them if there were any quicker routes out to which they had said no! They did not seem to appreciate the concept of express check out either insisting I re-visit them at reception with my keys which I had suggested I leave in my room so i could go out the back. (i still don't think they knew this alternative exit existed)
The breakfast staff were good. The air conditioning was good (it was during the very hot period - no problems).
In summary it is a fairly good hotel & I might have given it rating of 4 on another visit with a better room - but for me on this visit there were just too many irritations that I would not expect from a 5 star hotel.
You can't ask for a better location for a hotel in Berlin. The shopping street Friedrichstraße is right outside ( Berlin's "Oxford Street") and the beautiful Unter den Linden with Brandenburger Tore at the end is a two-minute walk from the hotel entrance. The lobby is a sight to behold. Beautiful!
The staff all speaks excellent English and are very accommodating in every way. This is not a modern hotel in any way, but a classic building where you can literally smell the history. And don't be surprised it you happen to spot Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in the hotel bar. Yes, it's that kind of place.
The Westin Grand is in the heart of Berlin, perfect for sight seeing as many of the key attractions are within easy walking distance - e.g. Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag etc. In the immediate area there are restaurants, shops etc
The hotel itself has a stunning sweeping staircase and a domed glass ceiling - it looks like it could have come out of a movie set! Our room was a good quality business type of room, it had air conditioning, a coffee maker, kettle & mini bar. The bed was comfortable and the en-suite had a bath with shower over.
We had booked bed & breakfast - well worth it as the breakfast was fantastic! It had all sorts of food - including fruit, cereals, fruit salad, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, omelettes, pancakes, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, croissants, various breads & jams, doughnuts, pastries etc etc... All very good quality - to drink there was tea (different types), coffee, fruit juices, smoothies etc.
The staff were all extremely friendly, helpful and polite. We didn't eat meals other than brekfast, or make use of the pool or spa treatments so I can't comment on this.
When I return to Berlin I would stay here again & would throughly recommend the Westin Grand to others.
First impression was excellent with the grand staircase, lovely room with massive bed cleanliness and up keep very good. Breakfast is very extensive but very busy and the relish bar with outside seething is a great place to relax. Hotel is situated very well 5 min walk to Branden burg gate 10 mins to check point Charlie and walking distance to many others was very hot when we were there so u bahn would have been unbearable. The only reason I gave this 4 rating was because of my check out experience asked to pay for accommodation and breakfast already paid for no apology nearly gave 3 . I would stay again sure I was just unlucky hotel is beautiful.
We have stayed in this area on our previous visits to Berlin but this was our first stay at The Westin Grand . We were made to feel welcome from checking in through to leaving in our taxi to the airport! Staff in the Business Center were particularly helpful when we needed to use a computer and printer .
Our room was lovely, spacious and well appointed.
