How to Get There
This hotel is located just next to Berlin’s main railway station with the German parliament, a number of federal government ministries, hotels and corporate offers within easy walking distance. The Spree River and some nice riverbanks are also very close. Apart from the railway station, the immediate neighbourhood is virtually dead at nights as nobody lives in this area. But there are plenty of public transport options to reach more lively parts of Berlin from the railway station.
The hotel itself is pretty new. The lobby area is quite big with a wide entry and a two story seating area with some colourful elements in the generally rather cold atmosphere. Everything was very clean and generally kept in good shape.
The room seemed to me a bit bigger than average and was elegantly furnished. But again a pretty sterile atmosphere: no picture on the walls, no elements to give the room a personal touch. The “double bed” which I booked was in fact two single beds pushed together with two beddings. This is a pity and a big minus given that this (together with too soft pillows) clearly compromised my sleeping comfort and that a number of contributors already criticised this arrangement before. Another minus that I’m not the first person to write about is the slow and unreliable WiFi in the room. It worked best in the toilet area of the bathroom and in the lobby, but seldom in the room itself. Everything else functioned well. Part of the bathroom was a walk-in rain shower, which I really enjoyed. But here again a pretty lifeless atmosphere.
All staff members I interacted with were exceptionally friendly and professional. I was always greeted, which gave me a feeling of being well recognised. The receptionists managed a very quick and efficient check-in and check-out and added a personal touch to each.
The breakfast buffet was very enjoyable and gives guests a wide choice of hot and cold food options. Omelettes and fried eggs are freshly prepared at a cooking station with staff who willingly fulfil guests’ requests.
No question, this Steigenberger is a good hotel. For me, personally, it lacks some warmth to really feel comfortable. There is some room for improvement regarding the beds and the WiFi, and I wonder if the hotel management really takes comments like on TripAdvisor about these lacks seriously and takes action to enhance the hotel’s product.
Currently staying here at the start of our European trip. We picked the Hotel for its location near the main rail station. You can’t get closer. As we use Hop On Hop Off buses, we couldn’t have done better, the bus stop is immediately outside.
Breakfasts are excellent, great choice and everything very fresh. The rooms are a very good size by European standards and have all the amenities you would expect. There is a fully equipped gym with modern equipment.
Only down side is the poor air conditioning. The temperature is preset and you can only make an adjustment up to 4 points either way. Currently very hot in Hamburg and although we adjusted to minus 4 our room I still hot.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning to come or go from Berlin by train all for a price less than for a 4 star in Sydney Australia.
The hotel is adjacent to Berlin Hauptbahnhof and the bar entrance is immediately opposite the pick up point for many of the HOHO bus tours. We called in for lunch in between two tours. Immediately on entering the building we knew we were in a high quality establishment (in contrast to the Steinberger Hotel in Potsdam where we were staying). Service was attentive and food good. Would consider staying in the hotel on a future visit to Berlin.
Perfect hotel if you travel by train; Berlin HBF just a few minutes walk
Excellent room and beds
Very rich breakfast buffet
Hotel restaurant surprising menu
Very good SPA
just what we expected
Our stay in this hotel was perfect. The moment we arrived, the staff were friendly and helpful and the room was clean and fresh. The only thing was that with the extreme warm weather - it was just a little too warm and the air conditioning didn't seem to do anything.
The location is also great - less than 5 minutes from the main train station - by the way - we never heard one single train whilst staying in the hotel.
I must say as well, that the breakfast was lovely. Everything fresh and the staff really friendly. thank you.
