There’s a hushed, moody sexiness to the lobby, all midnight blue banquettes, mirrored columns and chandeliers peeking from dark glass drums. It’s a modern update on the neoclassical elegance that has defined this downtown Atlanta gem for decades. Marble-tiled foyers lead to inviting living areas in each of the 444 rooms, 22 of which are suites with bay windows overlooking the city. In the Atlanta Grill, Chef Brian Jones reinterprets Southern flavors with dishes like scallops with black tea and mint mousseline, Georgia peaches, pork belly and pecans. If the weather cooperates, grab one of the sought-after seats on the pretty wrought-iron terrace. Afterwards, sidle up to the gilded Lumen Bar for old school cocktails and live jazz (Sunday through Thursday nights).
In the Area
The hotel is located on a quiet stretch just north of Atlanta’s bustling Midtown. For a taste of something purely Atlantan, head to The Colonnade, an old school joint serving up stiff cocktails and crispy fried chicken (leave room for a slice of apple pie). For nouveau Southern, try Restaurant Eugene’s molasses-doused foie gras on French toast and one of mixologist Greg Best’s inventive cocktails infused with homemade tinctures and bitters. Then take a walk through the leafy Piedmont Park Conservancy, an urban swath of poplar- and hickory-shaded paths. Look out for whale sharks and manta rays at the Georgia Aquarium, one of the world’s largest, or meander the expansive collection 19th- and 20th-century American and European art in architect Renzo Piano’s recently expanded High Museum. Need some retail therapy? Hop MARTA for a 30-ride to Buckhead, Atlanta’s most affluent suburban neighborhood and shopping mecca.
How to Get There
Everything at arrival went well. Room was nice, clean and as expected. People were friendly. The issues I had were small but frustrating for a hotel of this stature. Even though I’m a member, was charged for WiFi. Visited front desk and they happily removed...but missed first day. Again visited and it was removed. A few hours later the last day charges were added, again with WiFi...third visit. Water and coffee was refreshed daily but...had to request tea bags each day??? Same issue with shampoo and coffee stir sticks, never refreshed. Had to grab a shampoo from cart as I walked by. Little things like this can ruin an otherwise good stay.
For one reason or another we haven’t stayed at this hotel for a while.
We were booked at another hotel in Atlanta but changed at the last minute and were delighted to get a Club Level room. On arrival we were upgraded to a suite. We loved all the newly refurbished rooms.
The club level always feels like coming home at this hotel. Micah is amazing and is complimented by an amazing team of people. A special thanks to Tifoni who went above and beyond to accommodate my husband being gluten free for lunch.
This really is a great example of how a large hotel can feel personal and welcoming.
I think our only small negative was the slow and inconsistent service for breakfast in the Atlanta Grill.
We will be back.
I had a wonderful stay at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Atlanta. My room was gorgeous and spacious. The front desk and housekeeping staff were all kind, helpful, and anticipated my needs. The bell and valet staff were also friendly and efficient. The breakfast buffet at AG was delicious. I liked the cook-to-order omelet station together with the vast array of breakfast meats, pastries, and fruits. The fitness center on the 4th floor was also great. I appreciated the amenities in the fitness center, including the apples, Gatorade drinks, and vast selection of fitness equipment. This is one of the nicest hotels in Atlanta, and I will definitely come back the next time I am in town.
