All-suite hotel with enormous rooms and superb views on Grand Cayman’s white sand Seven Mile Beach
The Grand Cayman Beach Suites are more pleasant than chic, but none the worse for it. A former Hyatt, the property has rooms that retain a chain feel — generic abstract art, primary colored sofas, blue carpets and pastel walls — but the whole operation is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The pool area is more stylish, with navy cushioned loungers around two tiled pools and a hot tub fringed with palm trees. The restaurant, with its airy, high-ceilinged interiors and mahogany furniture, has a vintage charm.
Bed and Bath
The bathrooms don't scrimp on space, although they too could be a little higher in design. One-bedroom suites can accommodate up to two adults and two children (or four adults, for traveling friends), while the 1,100-square-foot two-bedrooms can hold up to six. Bathrooms have double sinks, separate soaking tubs and overhead showers with excellent water pressure. The bedrooms are comparatively small but come outfitted with flat-screen TVs and French or full balconies overlooking the pool and ocean. Be warned, though: Some rooms overlook the main road, which isn't a huge problem, but light sleepers might want earplugs if they fancy a lie-in in the morning.
Breakfast at Hemingway's is a standout, and the kitchen is open until a cushy 10:30 a.m. for a breakfast of juices, strong coffee and a menu running the gamut from American favorites (waffles, pancakes, french toast) to fresh fruit and giant freshly made omelets. There's also a swim-up bar that serves cocktails, soft drinks and snacks until 5 p.m.: sandwiches, burgers, conch fritters (the island’s specialty) and chicken wings (most things come in child portions, too). There's a daily free rooftop yoga session, and the more adventurous can book a dive with the Red Sail office on the beachfront. Many guests seem not to move from their plush loungers on the white sand beach, though; there's waiter service and plenty of shade, including tents for families. There's also a terrace bar, small spa and 24-hour gym, plus a regular shuttle bus to the nearby golf course.
In the Area
Seven Mile Beach is the tourist hub of Grand Cayman — helpfully situated just 15 minutes from the airport. This means that pretty much all of the island’s major amenities are nearby: gas stations, fast food outlets, supermarkets and a huge concentration of restaurants. Just opposite the Suites is Deckers (so-called because it features a full-size London bus), and a five-minute walk away is Texan barbecue joint Lone Star Bar & Grill, which does great ribs and burgers and has live music on most nights. Camana Bay, the newest shopping center on the island, has several bars and restaurants, a large bookshop and a movie theater, and is a 10-minute drive away.
