How to Get There
I’ve been told that The Saxon is an amazing place, so I phoned with quite a few queries about the place and parking especially, as I didn’t want my car parking outside during my stay. I spoke to a lady name Swazi who seemed to get annoyed and sounded very unhelpful to all my queries. As I never stayed there before I did have a few queries which I feel are justified. Just a very unwelcoming and unhelpful attitude from this staff member. This has really put me off booking at either The Saxon or Shambala as all bookings are done through The Saxon reservations. It’s shocking that staff like this are the ones who have to make reservations for potential first time clients, at a so called world class hotel. I have stayed in numerous luxury hotels in SA and abroad and have never dealt with such disappointing service from reservations staff. I will phone 1 more time when someone else is on shift and will hopefully be treated more professionally with a more friendly attitude. But my first impression of The Saxon so far, is not a good one.
Wow, and wow gain ! Had the great pleasure of staying at this wonderful hotel recently and from start to finish we were blown away by how welcomed we felt throughout our stay. The hotel is set in lovely gardens with a great pool area adjacent an open area where breakfast and lunch were served. There is a lovely peaceful courtyard with pools full,of majestic Coy Carp, a perfect location to read and relax. Our room was beautifully furnished and we wanted for nothing. There was a fantastic blend of African curios and artefacts on show which complimented the furnishings carefully selected to enhance all areas of the hotel. It would appear that the owner Mr Douw Steyn has shown his love of South Africa with how this hotel has been furnished throughout, and it is no surprise to see just how many world leaders and well known celebrities have stayed here in the last.
We enjoyed a fantastic dinner in the elegant restaurant and I was served the best flambeyed steak I have had in many a year, thank you chef !
I cannot pick out any individual member of staff for special praise as it would be unfair to do so as each and every member of staff were so professional, smiling and ensured that nothing was too much trouble for them in assisting us. I would congratulate manager Mr George Cohen who seems to have achieved a wonderful formula that would be envied through the world, thank you for a memorable stay. For anyone contemplating a luxurious stay in Johannesburg, I would suggest staying here and I am sure you will remember it forever.
One of the best hotel stays of my 200 odd hotel stays. Wonder of the world. Right at airport lady was there to receive us. The hotel car was via no and the driver was so helpful. He was more like a guide. We stayed at presidential suite 240 was outstanding room. One of the best in the world. We took hotel tour for Nex day and was outstanding. The hotel has heated pool. The rooms are huge and decoration is out of the wold. One of my best hotel stays in las 20 years.
Except the dinner veg food was below average. Otherwise 15/10. Never seen everything perfect. Even used the spa and was it of th world.
If u come to South Africa u must stay here. It is a wonder of the world by itself.
air conditioning didn’t work. Service didn’t know how to fix it..
So I had to sleep in an extremely hot room. And then I was eaten by multiple mosquitoes. Again the service had no clue how to solve this either.
Put me in another room finally at 1am. Then took forever to get keys and inflexible.
Worst experience ever
On the positive side the grounds and hotel itself is very spacious and looks amazing
Absolutely amazing hotel. Beautiful grounds, great pool, impressive food and best of all, the rooms! Ours was extremely quite and comfortable ... it felt like we were still at home, but, instead, we were in this incredible hotel.
The Saxon is THE place to stay in Johannesburg regardless of the length of stay or reason.
