Glam Philip Treacy-designed hotel in coastal Galway with a standout spa, rooftop terrace and pool
This 101-room hip hotel on Ireland’s romantic Galway coast caused quite a stir when it first opened its gilded doors in 2005, and it’s still white-hot thanks to the trailblazing design by the world’s most famous milliner, Philip Treacy (a Galway native). The lobby sets a Hollywood-fantasy vibe, with black glass walls, a bespoke wall fashioned from Venetian plaster to resemble a seashell and a tank filled with sea horses. The high drama continues in the hotel’s lounges, outfitted in various stylish guises, from the Grand Salon with its 300 silver mirror balls to the Ladies Lounge, with its psychedelic black-and-white rug and shocking-pink furniture. Give your overstimulated senses a rest in the tranquil spa, complete with a crystal steam room, a rock sauna and a relaxation lounge looking onto the Asian-inspired rooftop garden.
In the Area
A good place to start taking the pulse of the lively, art-loving city of Galway is the famous Saturday market near St. Nicholas Church, where you can browse an array of handcrafts and fresh produce while chatting with locals. Step back in time at the Galway City Museum, a striking contemporary space on the River Corrib that houses exhibitions exploring the city’s history. As you ramble through the Bridget’s Garden Celtic gardens, it will feel like you've stepped into a fairytale. Then get above it all at the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, craggy cliff tops that stretch five miles along the rugged Atlantic coast.
