Hotel Nice Excelsior
How to Get There
A chic boutique place, friendly staff, good price, good breakfast. Short walk to the beach, train station a stones throw away and close to all the tram lines. Might not be what some people expect and of course there are little improvements that could be made but the website is accurate about what it is and we had no nasty surprises.
Would stay again.
The management and staff at this hotel were amazing, they were helpful and lovely the overall decoration in the main, communal areas was quite nice too. The location is very central too. But that's where the good things end.
The hotel was well below standard for a 4-star hotel. We had a classic bedroom which sell at around €180 per night including breakfast, plus parking of €18 which wasn't available at the hotel and the parking they recommended was also full, but we did manage to get a space after waiting for half an hour.
Classic bedrooms are very small and slightly shabby, nothing like the photos of the other bedrooms featured everywhere which look as though they are a nice size. Our first bedroom was directly next to the lift shaft which sounded as though there was a pig squealing next to our heads. So we changed rooms to the next room, we could still hear it but it was much better. The room was even smaller than the first and there was not even room to get past the end of the bed without bumping into the furniture. The room and bathroom had a tired feel and there was a layer of dust above head height on the green 80's looking wallpaper. The bathroom was small too, and wasn't very clean, there was a black build-up of soap under the soap tray and the grout around most of the bath was black. It really did have a dirty feel to the room.
Breakfast was a nightmare, they were clearly understaffed and by the time we got down at 9 am (breakfast runs from 8-10 so we weren't late) there were no clean tables and the food was completely depleted. No orange juice, bread, bacon, eggs etc. They managed to bring some poor looking croissants out and some more bacon, but they didn't have any more bread. There were lots of guests hanging around looking really awkward and annoyed as they couldn't find a clean table. We cleaned our own and just ate the bare minimum.
To be honest we've stayed at much better B and B's and this one which looks amazing from the photos is overpriced and overrated in our opinion. We really wished we had booked somewhere else.
This hotel has a great location and most of the places that I wanted to go to was within walking distances. Breakfast was fair and in general service was okay. I am just not too sure why drinking water in my room was not replaced when the room keeping personnel see that I have purchased my own drinking water. Rooms & toilet as some reviews had mentioned was a little small.
