Hotel Nice Excelsior
How to Get There
I found this hotel to be very average. The physical building itself is much nicer and more spacious than I thought based on pictures, and the room that we had was quite large but there is a whole lot that can be improved here.
The location is about a 3 minute walk to the train station which means that it is about a 20-25 min walk from the water. That is not the hotel's fault, but it should be noted that if you stay there, you're a good walk away from all of the action of Nice whenever you want to go out. But, if you are planning a lot of day trips, the location could be ideal.
The front desk staff are not the friendliest bunch and some can be downright rude - and they are the only hotel staff in France that I encountered this attitude. It began at check in when I went to confirm that breakfast was included (as per an email I received stating that it was 12 euros per person, per day.) He immediately said that the price in the email was wrong and that it's 18 euros but he can get us breakfast for 15 euros if we tell him we want it right there and then. Standing in the foyer, with our luggage, after a flight and he's pressuring us to decide right then. Not impressed. We skipped breakfast there and found a lovely little bakery/cafe a block away where we enjoyed a nice breakfast for 5 euros each every morning. I did peek at the breakfast in the hotel and it looked very nice.
The room we had was very large. I would recommend upgrading your room, if you can. However, the night stands with the "fake" drawers was a disappointment since there were no real drawers in the room and minimal place for clothes. It would have been nice to have 3 real drawers in the night stand to use.
The shower is a joke. The design is such that there is literally no way to take a shower using the handpiece and not flood the entire room. And if you forego the handpiece and use the rain shower overhead it has absolutely no power. It's like showering in a light drizzle.
I can't speak for every room but in ours the bed had a huge sag in the middle and the cushions were lumpy. Sheets were of average quality - nothing great.
If I return to Nice I will not book this hotel - mainly because it is so far from the action of Nice and the room/staff were just average. I'm sure you can find much better for the price closer to the water.
The front of hotel is stunning and traditional. We had a 3rd floor room at the back which was railway themed and decorated in green and orange. It was too dark and depressing, hardly any wardrobe space and no drawers at all,I would say it caters for a very short break. The rooms on the front of hotel are the brightest and best,we would rather have a view of the town than the back of buildings.
We would say a 3*at best.
Breakfast was nice but could be improved if provided baked beans.
Our room was cleaned and replenished every day to a high standard.
Convenient for train station.
Nice was a fabulous place to visit. We enjoyed everything the food, water and the wine! The hotel was very clean and well maintained. Many cafes and restaurants nearby, and transportation was available by trolley or Uber.
If you're looking for a four star hotel experience - skip this one.
The hotel is okay, but nothing special. The rooms are super tiny, and there's really poor sound proofing, so you'll hear every word someone else whispers in the room next to you. The showers are really small and there's mold spots all over them. And if you think about having some drinks on your fridge in your room - don't as there's no fridge. There's a bar downstairs which is a total ripoff with water costing 7 euros.
There was a roadwork during our stay and we could not sleep for two nights as the sound proofing is really that bad. The noice was as loud as placing a hairdrier near your ear. The hotel did not notify us before the event.
The best part was the breakfast which was actually quite good: croissants, scrambled eggs, sausages, waffles, pancakes and a some cheese and cured ham. The bacon was reilly bad but I guess it's just France. Maybe some fruits would be needed though...
We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend to visit Nice and Monte Carlo for the formula e. The hotel is wonderful. Close to the train station (3 walk) and walking distance to the promenade, approx 20 mins. 30 min walk to the port. Lovely hotel, beautifully decorated to a fine standard, lovely rooms - very unique. Amazing staff who were always on hand to help. Excellent buffet breakfast with a good selection. We were so pleased we booked this hotel. Thanks to the lovely friendly staff for an amazing stay. We hope to see you again!
