How to Get There
We have just returned home from our 4 night stay at The Ellington Hotel in Nice.
Overall it was a good break. However I feel a few things could be improved.
1 The staff could be more attentative on arrival. We were kept waiting for quite some time( the staff knew we were there but didn t bother coming over!)
2 make the customer more aware of the sizes of beds in the rooms as we asked for a room that had 3 beds ( one for our 17 year old son aswell) My husband and son are both 6' 2" . The extra bed was for a child! However the hotel upgraded us to a bigger better room with a proper bed the next day with no extra cost.
3 to know english guests like their cup of tea. We need more than one teabag and one milk each per day please.
4 I have a wheat allergy which means i have to be gluten free. We told the hotel when we booked. Although i was given 2 pieces of gluten free bread every morning for breakfast i was terribly disappointed never to be offered a cake biscuit or pastry especially as we were in France. The buffet was amazing though.
5 As others have said there was no atmosphere. No jazz music. The staff were pleasant but not overly friendly.
6 on the last day we had 7 hours to wait for our transfer to the airport. The hotel kindly stored our bags. Unfortunately I got a bad migraine so had to walk back from town to sit in the room next to the bar. I was there for 4 hours holding my head in a lot of pain. The bar tender walked past me many times. I told him I was ill . I was not offered even a glass of water let alone a cup of tea.I found this to be quite disgusting. No one asked me if I was OK. A blonde lady who seemed to be in charge even walked past a few times as well. Not a good end to our holiday.
Nice is a lovely place. Monaco was amazing. Cannes was great. What no one seems to tell you is how very expensive it is. And from a personal point of view they do not cater for gluten free anywhere. Maybe one or two places in the whole of Nice.
But dare I say still had a good time. Great week of weather.
After all of the above. I would stay at the Ellington hotel again.
I think the ladies who cleaned the rooms were great. They did an excellent job. And the ladies on the reception desk were very helpful .As was the porter. Thankyou
In response to your reply; the time for sorting out the room was on the day.
As we said in our previous review we were offered other rooms all in the same style and condition! It is easy to reply after the event on here, but we gave you every opportunity to give us the room we had booked whilst we were with you. We even showed your staff which room we had paid for on your web site and what we had been given was shown as a basic room - a grubby basic room, not the executive room we had booked!!!
We stayed here for our wedding anniversary for 2 nights. The hotel is in an ideal spot, very short walk to the main shopping area! First impressions were good. The reception and bar area are nicely decorated and clean. The main reason for not giving 5 is the room. We booked a double room but it was so small! The bed was very comfy but was actually 2 singles pushed together and 2 single duvets. The room itself was very outdated too. The bathroom was decent though! I think a good refurb of the rooms that need it would make this hotel amazing! Breakfast was ok. Decent choice of pastries but only 3 choices of hot food unless you ordered an omelette at extra charge. Also be aware they do take a deposit on check in for if you have room service, drinks at the bar etc. They asked us for 100€ and we used 75€ of it so we were told we’d be refunded the rest! The reception staff were lovely and helpful. Allowed us to leave our luggage after we had checked out so we could go for a walk before we left. Bar staff were ok but not very chatty! We had our room cleaned the second day but they left empty coke bottles and used glasses in our room which I thought was a bit strange. Tv channels were very limited too. The only English ones were news channels so when we had an early night on the first night we ended up watching ninja warrior in German! On the whole the hotel is very nice and like I said the location is perfect. Just the rooms let it down for us.
Having recently stayed in The Hotel Ellington in Nice we were massively dissatisfied.
The room we booked through our Tour operator was an Executive Double. We complained immediately about the small, grubby room with stained carpet with street facing view. We were shown 2 more, which were all grubby and of no more than a 3 star standard room. We even showed reception the picture of the room we had booked and that all the rooms we had been offered were the basic rooms shown on their own website, just slightly different in size, but all of equally poor quality.
The reception suggested that maybe our expectations were too high for a 4 star hotel.
Having stayed in Nice before and having stayed all over Europe with the same tour operators, this is the first time we have ever complained about the standard of room.
We stayed in this hotel from Saturday 13th October until Wednesday 17th. Three years before I had a an excellent experience staying here, however this time was much different.
Firstly we had been on holiday in Amsterdam and Paris and this was the last stop on our tour. On arrival we were told we would have to put a 150€ deposit down ( so far unreturned!). We had not been forewarned of this. First night was ok but hotel Wi-Fi is fairly terrible. As a laundry service was advertised we put our laundry in the bag provided outside our door Sunday early morning. We had no list or price guide. When the laundry didn't turn up clean I went to the desk on Monday to ask what was wrong and was told I needed to sign a document so it could be returned. Not once was I ever shown or told how much this service cost. The reception area is very dark here so foolishly I trusted these people and signed the paper.
Also during the first night a sandwich forgotten half finished in our bag was found inundated with ants. We reported this and were given a can of Raid. We have pictures. My partner said the reaction showed they were not shocked by this. We continued to see ants in the room later on in our stay. Also I was badly bitten all over at night by either mosquitos or ants.
We came back to the hotel Tuesday early evening to find our laundry returned. Far too late as we had put it in Sunday and were flying Wednesday. Also attached was a bill for 220€!!! Imagine my shock. It was worth more than the clothes themselves. As it was only a junior member of staff on reception I went down at 8 Wednesday morning when the lady who was senior was on. The reaction was curt to say the least and although clearly I had signed to send off the laundry her reaction was like, so what, pay up. I think this was deliberate and just a way to make money. Never was the usurious bill ever warned about or was made clear how ridiculous it would be. I feel this was deliberate and sneaky way to make money off me.
When I had initially booked online I had miscalculated the number of days I would stay in Nice. Therefore I had to book another final night at the hotel. This should have meant breakfast would be 12€ each. At reception I was told no but it would be full price despite the offer they have. Needless to say I didn't have breakfast.
Finally as I left only then dud they tell me we had local tax to pay 16€.
All in all I would say this hotel is just a cynical money making exercise. I know in the UK this laundry rip off would not be legal. But who knows here? Suffice to say I will not be coming to this hotel again and neither will my friends who were regular visitors and who brought me the first time. Also be warned we had souvenirs from holiday that went missing but I didn't complain as I could not be certain 100% if it was taken from our room or lost to or from the hotel.
Angry and disappointed. A holiday spoiled!
