Bandol is a holidaymakers delight; set on the Côte d’Azur in southern France, it’s an area fringed in pretty beaches and picturesque inlets. Its quaint harbour steals the show, dutifully lined in palms and filled with postcard-perfect sailing boats, which tinkle an ambient soundtrack as the water undulates beneath them. Voted on TripAdvisor as the best place to stay in Bandol, the five-star Hotel Ile Rousse Thalazur Bandol is set amidst it all, with its own patch of private beach to boot.
You can gaze over the water from the water, with a dip in Hotel Ile Rousse Thalazur Bandol’s saltwater infinity pool, which is thoughtfully heated to 25° all year round. Alternatively, you can head into relaxed seclusion at the spa, which comes complete with indoor pool, sauna and steam room. Spend an afternoon over a tranquil treatment or two before refreshing and heading to Les Oliviers for dinner – the menu here makes the most of the region’s produce.
How to Get There
We have stayed in this hotel a number of times in recent years. The restaurant, always nice, has been recognised with a Michelin star. We also enjoyed the beach restaurant open only in July and August in the evening I think. Lovely views from the rooms. Very pleasant staff. Not cheap but a great hotel.
We are still smarting from the extortionate €30 pp/day for sun beds which spoilt our last visit in Sept 2017. We would so love to return. I think if they just incorporated in the bill without mentioning the charge it wouldn’t be so bad. We are still angry and upset.
One positive note: the gentleman who works at the front desk late at night is very helpful and professional. Otherwise, the tremendous potential of this hotel (based on its location) is squandered on poor management. Too many mistakes. My room had an odor like a locker room. When I checked in, the elevator that I was directed to use opened up to a collection point for used bed linens even in the middle of the day (see photo). The furnishings resemble those in a college dormitory (see photo). Based on these impressions, I decided to not dine at the hotel.
Next problem was the bill. I prepaid online for a 3-night stay and specifically elected to not include breakfast. My email receipt clearly reflected pre-payment in full and no breakfast. At checkout, the charges on my bill were doubled and breakfast charges were added. I pointed out this error and offered to show my receipt for pre-payment in full. First I was told that I had paid only half in advance and then I was told that I had actually pre-paid only 30%. When I offered again to show my email receipt, the clerk examined the website booking summary which was attached to my bill and admitted that the bill was incorrect so I simply paid the hotel tax.
