Overview

The Review

Having swept through the lush fields of Brittany and Normandy, pulling up to the cobbled front of L’Ermitage — on the mainland across from the island — went perfectly with the part Disney, part gothic fantasy that images of romantic Mont Saint-Michel had planted in my imagination.

The hotel does all it can to play to these, with a roaring fireplace in the lobby, an interior kitted out in lush colors, and flouncy antique touches on every bit of furniture in sight. The front section is housed in a converted coaching inn built in 1857, while the restaurant and four of the suites are tucked away in a sympathetically designed extension behind.

The blend of new and old is subtle at L’Ermitage, but it works. The suites are decorated in red and beige or blue and gray (traditional colors from its inn days); all have classic French styling, with embroidered tapestry headboards above the kingsize beds, heavy patterned curtains and firmly upholstered armchairs. But the fact that it is, in part, a new building means that the property is flooded with light, giving it a freshness that many fusty old chateaux could only dream of. The bathrooms are enormous, all featuring rolltop baths, rain showers and double sinks.

L’Ermitage isn’t on the Mont itself — it’s in Beauvoir, the small town that has sprung up on the mainland in the shadow of the island. Located slightly back from the main strip, however, the property is a world away from the touristy, neon-signed hotels and restaurants crammed onto the road to the island. And to avoid intrusions from the modern world, you can walk the three miles from the property to the Mont along the river, with the spectacular view looming like a medieval theme park in the distance. Doing it this way will keep that magical feeling going while you explore, and make sure it stays with you when you slip back to the hotel – where the old-school charm remains, albeit with a new edge.
