The Review

After a few days in Paris tripping over the lines at the Louvre, a weekend trip to a countryside chateau offers an idyllic respite. Through the towering gates and down the long drive flanked by manicured lawns, Chateau de Challain emerges as if from the pages of a fairytale — all Rapunzel towers, spires and turrets. Zeus, the resident German shepherd, will be the first to greet you at the door, followed by the chateau owner’s charming assistants, Jean-Marie and Fabien.

The welcome tour reveals the chateau’s exquisite interiors, including the carved wood–paneled library, with its collection of classic French literature, the countess’s blue silk bedroom, the stuffed wild animal menagerie (all acquired antiquities), the grand salon, and the haunting sense of history throughout. {“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2022/prop-28753-1321378115-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The bathroom of the Romance Suite has a clawfood tub for two and views of the gardens.”}

The spacious suites are individually decorated in Belle Epoque style, with carved antique beds, fabric-covered walls, antique paintings and luxurious private baths. The Empress Suite, for example, has eggplant and chocolate walls and dramatic silk draperies inspired by an antique brooch. The Romance Room is tucked away with a clawfoot tub, en suite dining room and huge rose silk bed.

Open year-round, the chateau is especially popular for fairytale weddings between April and October; couples wed in the tiny chapel in the chateau, on the lake bridge, under the gazebo or in the adjacent formal church. It’s also a great base for exploring different sides of the French countryside, from cultural visits to Nantes, Angers and Saumur to wine tastings across the Loire Valley.

The most amazing place
Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Me and my husband got married here on May 12th, we stayed friday to sunday, and it couldn't have been more magical. Cynthia and the staff was amazing, they just had total control of everything and we didn't have to worry about a thing.

We didn't have the best weather so it was a little cold, but other than that everything was absolutely magical. The food was amazing, the rooms were so cool and well... I got the princess wedding I've always dreamt of. I can highly recommend you to get married here, or just for a few days of vacation.

50th Birthday Present
Reviewed 4 months ago

We actually stayed at the Chateau in 2005. The trip was my 50th birthday present from my wonderful husband. It looks like there have been a lot of changes. It was beautiful and fantastic then, it appears to be more so now. We had a lovely room, which I see hasn't changed. The owners weren't there at the time, but our hostess couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. I hope to go back to the Chateau again someday. What a birthday present!!!!

Chateau Challain visit
Reviewed 7 months ago

During my search for a wedding venue I visited Chateau Challain and I had a wonderful tour by Brett. This was great, as Brett took the time to explain all the wedding schedule, showed all the rooms of the Chateau along with lots of nice stories, greeted us as if we were friends visiting. It is important to have an excellent impression at first sight, and this was the case when we visited Chateau Challain thanks to Brett and the Challain team!

We decided to have an elopement ceremony at Chateau Challain, and WOW we couldn't have written a better experience! The Chateau is enchantingly beautiful and beyond compare, but it is nothing without the wonderful people who take care of it and took care of us during our stay. Traveling from the States to get married in France with no family or friends around was a little nerve racking, but from the moment Brett picked us up at the train station we felt at ease. Brett was EXTREMELY helpful and really made us feel at home at the Chateau. He really did it all! He made us a great dinner the night we arrived, prepared beautiful flower arrangements, bouquets, and amazing decor for our wedding day. He made our wedding a dream come true! He genuinely cared about our special day and made any nerves from not having family and friends around melt away. The whole staff was great and you can tell they take pride in their work and enjoy welcoming guests. A special thanks to Bridgette who was wonderful! Not only did she prepare wonderful breakfasts each morning, but she also fixed the strap and a small hole on my very delicate wedding dress! Over our brief stay we felt like family and it was sad to leave. We will definitely be going back to visit whenever we go to France!
