The InterContinental is a favorite for business travelers thanks to top-of-the-line meeting facilities and a convenient location in the Westshore business district, a short drive from the Tampa Convention Center. Still, the 323 guestrooms have a relaxed Floridian vibe thanks to a cheerful teal and white color scheme and modern artworks portraying sea creatures and shells, plus mod cons such as minibars, iPod docking stations and coffeemakers. Hit the rooftop pool for a swim, then head to Shula’s Steakhouse for breakfast. Decorated in honor of the 1972 Miami Dolphins’ “perfect season,” Shula’s also serves lunch and dinner, while the No Name Lounge works well for post-meeting cocktails and catching the game on one of five plasma TVs.
In the Area
The concierge recommends heading west toward Clearwater Beach, about 30 minutes from the hotel. After a stroll on the sand, travel down Gulf Boulevard to John’s Pass at Madeira Beach for souvenir shopping. Next, drive to Fort De Soto Park for a swim at one of Florida’s best beaches, and then on to lunch at Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro in St. Petersburg. Spend the afternoon strolling around the Salvador Dalí Museum, home to nearly 100 of the surrealist painter’s works. Back in Tampa, opt for dinner at Italian favorite Donatello, which also features live jazz.
How to Get There
I drove down to visit some relatives in Ocala, Florida. Since it was only another hour and a half to the beach area, I continued to drive to Tampa. I found the hotel rates to be a little bit high since we still were not really in the spring season as of yet.
Using the hotel tonight app, a Geo rate popped up for about $90 at the westshore Grand Hotel. I visited this hotel several times when it was the intercontinental Hotel. So I grabbed the excellent rate and decided to see what the difference would be.
Glad to say that there is no difference in the hotel, the quality and service, the staff, and most of all the very nice bedrooms, with excellent beds that make you not want to get up in the morning.
This hotel is very close to Tampa international airport. you are also about 35 minutes from Clearwater Beach, one of the nicest beaches on the west coast of Florida.
There is ample free parking in the garage behind the hotel, which is shared by an office building. There are several restaurants nearby, a mall across the street, and a more upscale mall about 2 miles away near the airport.
You are less than a five-minute drive to downtown Tampa, the University of Tampa, the children's museum, and an additional 5 minutes will get you to the Port of Tampa for cruises.
The staff did indicate that this tribute portfolio Hotel, has been merged in with the Marriott family of hotels. they said this only occurred within the last few weeks. So you may see it soon on Marriott's website.
Bottom line - This is an excellent hotel in a very good spot to allow you to explore the Tampa Bay area.
The staff is great! They are really nice and they know how to take care of you. Breakfast is awesome and service is great, the staff at Shulas are all very nice specially Jerald who is always very attentive and lovable.
came here for business...weird week where all the hotel rooms were very very expensive throughout Tampa. This place had a decent rate. Anyway, everything about this hotel is clean, newer, fine, good beds, good bathroom, good AC. My only beef is that the food/room service was pretty weak...took a long time and the food was pretty lousy. But the hotel is across street from 8 good restaurants and there are many option nearby (Seasons 52, Maggianos, Chipotle, Panera, etc...all within walking distance. Charley's steakhouse is close too. So that is my only beef. Great place.
My tween daughter and I stayed here after sitting at the airport for 6 hours, having our flight cancelled, finding a new one, renting a car and finding accommodations. With 4 stars and decent reviews, I assumed it was a nice place. We had to wait in the lobby until everyone, even folks that arrived arrived after us, were taken care of. The receptionist was not nice. The room was average, not as nice as the double tree Hilton we stayed at with my husband the days prior (he had an earlier flight that made it to the blizzard at MSP). There was dirt at the bottom of the tub. My daughter went to the lobby the next night to ask a question and the gal at the front desk was rude to her.
It is located close to the airport and the bed was comfortable. I rate the hotel as average.
This hotel is less than 15 minutes from the airport and provides shuttle service. It's right across the street from the mall and several restaurants. I was there a very short period of time so not much time to explore. The front desk staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The property is spotless from top to bottom. My room was very comfortable and cozy. I will stay here again !!
