Westshore business district sleep with a rooftop pool and a steakhouse, a short drive from the Tampa Convention Center

The Lowdown

The InterContinental is a favorite for business travelers thanks to top-of-the-line meeting facilities and a convenient location in the Westshore business district, a short drive from the Tampa Convention Center. Still, the 323 guestrooms have a relaxed Floridian vibe thanks to a cheerful teal and white color scheme and modern artworks portraying sea creatures and shells, plus mod cons such as minibars, iPod docking stations and coffeemakers. Hit the rooftop pool for a swim, then head to Shula’s Steakhouse for breakfast. Decorated in honor of the 1972 Miami Dolphins’ “perfect season,” Shula’s also serves lunch and dinner, while the No Name Lounge works well for post-meeting cocktails and catching the game on one of five plasma TVs.

In the Area

The concierge recommends heading west toward Clearwater Beach, about 30 minutes from the hotel. After a stroll on the sand, travel down Gulf Boulevard to John’s Pass at Madeira Beach for souvenir shopping. Next, drive to Fort De Soto Park for a swim at one of Florida’s best beaches, and then on to lunch at Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro in St. Petersburg. Spend the afternoon strolling around the Salvador Dalí Museum, home to nearly 100 of the surrealist painter’s works. Back in Tampa, opt for dinner at Italian favorite Donatello, which also features live jazz.
