Overview

Westshore business district sleep with a rooftop pool and a steakhouse, a short drive from the Tampa Convention Center

The Lowdown

The InterContinental is a favorite for business travelers thanks to top-of-the-line meeting facilities and a convenient location in the Westshore business district, a short drive from the Tampa Convention Center. Still, the 323 guestrooms have a relaxed Floridian vibe thanks to a cheerful teal and white color scheme and modern artworks portraying sea creatures and shells, plus mod cons such as minibars, iPod docking stations and coffeemakers. Hit the rooftop pool for a swim, then head to Shula’s Steakhouse for breakfast. Decorated in honor of the 1972 Miami Dolphins’ “perfect season,” Shula’s also serves lunch and dinner, while the No Name Lounge works well for post-meeting cocktails and catching the game on one of five plasma TVs.

In the Area

The concierge recommends heading west toward Clearwater Beach, about 30 minutes from the hotel. After a stroll on the sand, travel down Gulf Boulevard to John’s Pass at Madeira Beach for souvenir shopping. Next, drive to Fort De Soto Park for a swim at one of Florida’s best beaches, and then on to lunch at Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro in St. Petersburg. Spend the afternoon strolling around the Salvador Dalí Museum, home to nearly 100 of the surrealist painter’s works. Back in Tampa, opt for dinner at Italian favorite Donatello, which also features live jazz.

Perfect for business travel

Stayed here for a business trip and would have given this hotel five stars except there were a few service mishaps that really could have been prevented. My expectation is that a hotel in this class would have the utmost customer service.

The rooms however are very nicely appointed - including bath robes and extremely comfortable beds. One note, the bed is extremely high. There is coffee service in the room which is good because a cup of black coffee in the hotel restaurant is $5.

Speaking of restaurants- the lobby bar as well as the hotel restaurant were very good but if you want something other than hotel food - there are many restaurants nearby, many within walking distance.

The hotel is conveniently located near shopping and is not very far from the airport.

I will be staying here again and if the service is different, will post another review.

Shula’s bar

The service was good the first two nights that I stayed at the Westshore grand. So tonight on my last night at this hotel. I decided to stop one more time for a drink and a coworker joined me for food. We had great conversation and I told the bartender Jimmy that I was going to close out my tab for my room. And order a drink on my debit card. I noticed after I finished my drink that my bill wasn't in front of me like it normally was. He said I got it for you. He brought it over and I gave him my debit card and signed it and also gave him a $1.00 tip on $5.43. Then he took it and then brought me another bill with blank receipt to sign again? Confused I asked him what this was for. He said you messed up and wrote your room number on the last receipt. What?! That didn't make any since. I went to the front desk and they looked into my room charge and then took me to the Shula's Manager. He was no help at all and asked Jimmy for my charge receipts. It still didn't match up for the extra $5.43 charge on my debit card. The manager couldn't answer to why I was extra charged and that I needed to call my bank. Im very disappointed as to how this was handled. It's not about the $5. But it's the honesty of it all. Watch your drink tap and bank statement because it seems to me like that this place is taking advantage of people when they don't think you're paying attention!

The pool has wonderful view but it is a not a very attractive setting and needs a makeover. Elevators full of fingerprints. Rooms nice clean. Bathrooms are ok nothing special. The location is next to mall and movie theatre but not much else.

Grand Service at the Westshore Grand

As a Marriott rewards member, this was one of the BEST Marriott hotels I have visited. The hotel lobby is very modern and spacious, check-in was easy, and friendly. The valet staff was also kind and friendly (free, self-parking is available). The gym is AMAZING! The Westshore Grand's gym has state of the art weight equipment, treadmills, and elliptical machines. It was the cleanest and nicest hotel gym that I have ever had the pleasure of using. Kudos to the Westshore Grand for such an outstanding gym!

My king room was beautiful and big, with a spacious bathroom. Housekeeping provided excellent service. My room was cleaned daily, and no one was annoyed at my asking for more tea bags, cups, sugars, or coffee stirrers. Housekeeping was very accommodating to my "tea needs". The Westshore Plaza is directly across the street. There are good restaurants within walking distance (very safe) or nearby. International Plaza (mall) is also nearby.

The only reason I did not give this hotel five stars was because of the view. Because it is situated between two office buildings, the only views are of an atrium, and people working in their offices. It wasn't a bad view. The view was definitely better than a parking lot view, and I don't believe that the people working in their offices could see into my room, but still I only had the curtains opened slightly during the day. However, I would stay here again and again. The Westshore Grand is definitely a grand hotel providing grand service.

Nice location

We enjoyed staying at this hotel. The room was clean, beds were comfortable, and the lobby bar has a wonderfully friendly staff, good appetizers, and drinks. It was quite noisy on Saturday night with a prom party and people coming and going until all hours. We had breakfast at Shula’s on Sunday, and that was nice. The hotel is located across a mall and there are other restaurants very near the hotel. All in all, it was a good experience.
