How to Get There
The resort is beautiful , it is very close to the bridge to Sanibel Island.
The only down fall is there is no beach. The staff was friendly and helpful. For couples or adults there is no night life , band music etc.
The drive trip was very long and hot from the east coast. Once our arrival in the area we heard on the radio that the beaches were all closed Sanibel/Captiva due to the blue algae and the red tide. Disappointed Marriott did not call us to notify of the problem ahead of time. The resort was well managed and the steakhouse food was great. Unfortunately the smell was overwhelming and the stock pile of dead fish and turtles was disgusting.
We stayed at the Marriot Sanibel Harbour for the second time in August. The resort is beautiful. To watch the sunset and sunrise from your hotel is breath-taking. Service is excellent. An example, something went wrong with our TV. Not only did they sent someone up to attempt to fix it, but when that failed, they replaced it with a new TV. Food on the property was a cut above and there were multiple restaurants on the property. If I am in the area again, this is were I would stay.
This was by far my worst Marriott experience! It started off with a 4pm check in. Our flight arrived around 10am. We drove to the resort to see if we could check in early, but they said that the room wasn’t ready, but they would call when it was. They also said that their check in was at 4pm. I have never heard of a 4pm check in and hope I never hear it again! Although I requested a mattress topper for the pull out sofa prior to arriving and upon arrival, that did not happen. They told me that they would have the pull out sofa made and everything requested ready once we could check into our room. You would think that everything would be ready with a 4pm check in time, but nope! We drove around with a 6 year old that had been up since 4am for 5 hours waiting on the phone call saying that our room was ready, but never got the phone call. I called at 4 to see what was going on and the room was ready (so much for them calling me). We get to our disgusting room and spent another 2ish hours calling and waiting for them to bring the things they were supposed to have in there. I brushed it off, because they were “so nice” and upgraded me from the Captiva tower to the main Sanibel building. That “upgrade” did not come with a microwave as I requested, included the strong smell of marijuana (I have a 6 year old adopted son with a history of abuse and has PTSD) and a gross room. Because this was the “upgrade”, I decided to drive by Captiva to see what it looked like. Needless to say, it was an upgrade considering how gross the Captiva building looked. After speaking with a manager, we were told they would slip notes underneath the doors to address the marijuana issue and that the Sanibel building wasn’t equipped to handle microwaves. They said that they didn’t have nicer rooms, so nothing could be done about that. Mind you, this is a cat 8 hotel! Fast forward to the next day when my son is standing on the balcony and tells me that he smells marijuana. We had not mentioned the marijuana issue in front of him whatsoever, so at that point I was furious. While I am on the phone with Sabrina, we discovered bugs crawling around the table next to where my son was sleeping. After speaking with Sabrina, I called the Platinum Elite number. I explained everything that had happened and requested to be moved. Michelle F placed me on hold so that she could look for a different Marriott for us to move to. After holding for another 20+ minuets, she came back to inform me that she did not check on other Marriotts, but had been on the phone with Sabrina from the resort instead. Long story short, she wasted my time and clearly didn’t listen to a word that I had said. As I was explaining my frustration with her, the phone disconnected. She didn’t call me back, so I called the PE number again. This time I spoke with Hernando who apologized and said that he would see what he could do and would call me back. Well.... Hernando never called back! Michelle F eventually called me back and said that we could move to the JW on Marco Island. I told her that I would have to call her back since Marco Island was so far away. I called back and they said they they couldn’t take Michelle off of calls to answer. Needless to say, we stayed at the horrible resort on the conditions that they moved us to a cleaner room that had everything we needed and would not be charged for anything. We get to our new room and of course we had to request the things that they were supposed to already have in there. We get home (FINALLY!) and I had been charged, so here I am having to spend another hour on the phone with Marriott to get that resolved.
If all of that isn’t enough, this part of Florida is having red tide issues. There were dead fish floating everywhere and the smell was horrific. It IS NOT safe to get in the water! When you get near the beach, you will start coughing and have a runny nose. It is also causing flesh eating bacteria, which is killing people. When we asked the manager at the resort about this, he appointed us to some areas in Sanibel that was “safe” to get in. He claimed that it had not reached them yet. Good thing we used good judgment, but unfortunately some didn’t. The resort also continued to rent out jet skis, etc. It’s clear that this resort cares more about money than they do people. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen and I hope they lose every dime that they are screwing people out of!
The resort is nestled in a nice location. The amount of ammenties is Great and staff is wonderful. The only downside was the Captiva tower is in need of some attention and the room is a bit dated especially spending the night without a.c. but we opened the balcony door and it gave us a chance to watch the lightning storm over the water. The staff made up for it by offering comp breakfast and we still had an awesome time. We will definitely return.
