How to Get There
This hotel used to be an all-male gay resort hotel, apparently it is not any more. Some sites on the web still list it that way, or as "gay friendly." Technically, by law, everything has to be gay friendly in the broad sense. Like McDonald's, they can't turn you away... but it isn't exactly a gay place. So, when my husband and I booked a romantic getaway at a quiet all-gay place we'd stayed at before, we were horrified and disappointed to walk up and find families and their screaming kids all over the pool. Not exactly what we'd booked. for. Being 4th of July, everything in the area was booked up and we had no choice but to stay. The hotel itself is ok, kinda 2 1/2 star basic, but ruined by the Motel 6 clientele that now stay there. If it had been just adults only and not exclusively gay would have been acceptable at least, but with kids all over we never got any of the peace and quiet we'd hoped for. Kids in the pool almost all the time (and the pool closes early, which really sucked). Kids screeching and stomping around. Not a relaxing getaway at all. And uncomfortable for us to be romantic or affectionate in any of the public areas.
Also, the pool bar is now open to the public?! It got kinda busy at times, leaving us, the actual guests, crowded out. And any weirdo can walk in and drink and watch people (and kids) at a pool? Messed up.
So caveat emptor, this is NOT much more than an average family hotel that you'd find anywhere. DO NOT book unless you're looking to hang out at a playground.
My boyfriend and I have stayed at The Royal Palms before and lets just say, this place has seen better days. On 07/01/2018 we checked in at 7:30PM, we asked what time the bar closed and the front desk receptionist said 9:30PM. Perfect, we thought, we can place our bags in our room and then grab a quick night cap. As we were finishing up getting our keys another employee walked in carrying a pizza and they started conversing. The lady helping us check in happened to confirm with pizza lady that the bar was still open to which she said, "oh no he left hours ago because it wasn't busy." Well that's frustrating. We made the best of it and headed up to fight the crowds by the beach.
Next day, 07/02/2018. We stir around 9AM ready to hit the beach, we plan to meet friends later that night but thought it would be fun to have our local pals meet us at our swanky hotel for a beverage before we head to dinner. As we are leaving we ask what time the bar opens, 11AM we are told. We come back from the beach around 1PM, bar is closed. Hmmmmmm. I walk in to the office to confirm the time again because we have already let our friends know to meet us at 6:30PM at our hotel ... The same lady who told me it opened at 11AM now said "Oh I just found out that the guy had an emergency and isn't coming, I'll try and find someone else." As you can guess no one ever showed up.
07/03/2018, when we arrived we asked about late check out. The lady who checked us in said "no problem!" Did some typing on her computer and said as long as you guys are out by 3PM on 07/03 you will be good to go! I made sure there wasn't a charge and she confirmed that the hotel wasn't busy and it wasn't an issue. After a night out with friends we are sleeping soundly until we get a knock on our door at 10AM. I open the door to find the first woman who checked us in, "oh you guys are still here" ... Ummm yes we are still here we have late check out! She then asked me if I paid for the extra hours, I was flabbergasted. You checked me in! You said no charge! Don't you make a note on my reservation to ensure the best quality of customer service!? She left in a huff but we got our extra hours of sleep, even though this little stint interrupted it, and they did not charge us extra thank god.
Things to also consider: So many families stayed while we were there. People under the age of 21 and the appeal that this is an LGBT hotel was lost. The gay vibe has been there in the past but it was nonexistent during this trip, very disappointing. No ice bucket in our room and the front desk couldn't provide us with one either. Overall, the gay sexy cocktail slinging bar that we once experienced is no longer. It's now a family hotel with children running a muck, no bar service, and lackluster staff.
Stayed here for couple of nights before our Caribbean cruise. The hotel is situated in lovely area a short walk from the "centre" of Fort Lauderdale beach area. We stayed in one bedroom suite, and had a lot of space for us two! A separate bedroom, a living room and kitchen. Everything was clean. Short walk from various Cafes and restaurants. Very helpful and friendly staff!
Horrible all around and they charged me twice for my stay! I spoke to someone who said they would refund me the over $1000 within 4 business days. Instead I got a $70 credit. They will now not return my emails or calls.
I am easy to please and would never write a bad review if they at least tried.
The service here is non-existent. No one cares about you at all. The fitness center was dirty and not cleaned until the day we left. There was some kind of animal feces next to the pool for almost the entire week, but since no one cleans it was never removed.
My sister and her BF discovered the NVB hotels on their last stay in Fort Lauderdale so we decided to stay there on our recent trip during the Fort Lauderdale Air Show. This is a great location as it is less than two block from the ocean and if you are standing outside of the hotel you can see the water.
Rooms are pretty decent however the beds were too soft for my taste. Where our rooms were located it was pretty secluded and the pool was right outside our door which is good for the pool access but when people decided to hang out by the pool late at night it can be quite noisy.
They will clean your room every day and they do a good job keeping you in towels if you need. If you have to park GET A PARKING PASS as you will be towed without it!! I did not like the fact there were no telephones in the room and the front desk is sometimes slow to respond as there is not always someone at the front desk. The bathrooms only have a shower, no bathtubs. There is a poolside bar that closes way too early and looks to be very limited in what they office.
I would like to check out some other NBV hotels in the area as they seem nice, clean and affordable choices that are close to the beach.
