In the Area
The concierge recommends starting your day with a cup of Cuban coffee paired with traditional tostadas at Versailles Café. For a cultural overview of the city, head to the Vizcaya Museum and Garden, which showcases Miami’s cultural heritage in a stunning waterside villa set amid beautiful European-style gardens. When hunger strikes, head to Spanish restaurant Casa Juancho — be sure to order the homemade sangria and the Callos a la Madrileña: tripe, beef feet, sausage and blood sausage cooked in a spicy sauce. At night, channel Old Havana and hit the dance floor at Bongos Cuban Café, where Caribbean and Latin tunes play until the wee hours.
How to Get There
This is the most surprising Intercontinental I’ve stayed at. How is this an Intercontinental? I feel like it used to be something else and then IHG bought it and renovated it. It’s a small property with no valet and a 2 Star pool area. The restaurant was empty and the hotel gift shop was a closet. The business center ran out of ink so I couldn’t print a contract I was working on. It’s nicer than a Holiday Inn but not up to Intercontinental standards.
We were arriving on a late flight into Miami and wanted somewhere to stay overnight before the long drive to key west.
Clean and well maintained with excellent staff at check out. (guy at check in seemed uninterested and generally too cool for school though)
Has the bonus of being able to walk 3 mins to the excellent Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza.
Unfortunately our sleep was disturbed by some drunken idiots trying to get into our room in the middle of the night (thinking it was theirs), but although we were on the ground floor I don't suppose that is the hotel's fault............... (unless the night staff weren't doing their job and turning a blind eye?)
Fairly easy drive (20 mins) from the airport.
I’m an Ambassador member. Stay away from this hotel. Was trying to get a good night’s sleep before an early morning flight but was interrupted by a huge party down the hallway at 3 am. Have no clue how the front desk or security could not have known there was a raucous party underway. Security finally came but too late. This property is franchised from Intercontinental. My advice, stay away. Poor standards. On the check out one of the agents asked me how my stay was. I clearly let her know. The proper thing to do was to void the night. Instead I received a feeble “sorry”. Never again!!
I am dissappointed with brand intercontinental. Have stayed at lots of other intercontinentals. This one was no where close to others. It is more of a holiday Inn but branded as intercontinental. Room cleanliness was ok, but the room i got i can hear loud noise and finally realzed it was coming from the elevator going up and down. Noise from planes landing at the airport was loud too. Hotel had good size gym, but the spa was pretty much a small room inside gym. My room was cold may be because the temperature outside wasn't hot, but my thermostat didnt work to increase the temperature. Technition who came to look told me to set it up over 80 and it should be fine, but didnt so i finally turned the AC off and that helped warm the room. I am not going to stay here again. If intercontinental then I would go to downtown one instead.
Stripped down to the bottom (!) the once prestigious and well known Global Hotel chain InterContinental has really lost it .... The Doral (!) InterContinental not only locks (!) it's mini-bar - it the very average rooms - outdated - 80' style rooms they will charge 5 $ for a bottle of water .... NOT even a courtesy bottle of plain water available .... paying roughly a 150$ nightly rate .... how low can you go ... not even offering your guests a bottle of water to drink or make coffee...Not my place anymore -- Never again
