The Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour is amazing. Everyone there takes such great care of you, every minute of every day. They get to know you quickly, they treat you like royalty, and they also do this while not overstepping and being in your business too much. Our room was a partial ocean-view room which looked out to the harbour/inlet, Haulover Beach State Park, and the Atlantic Ocean. The bathtub and shower looked right out over the water -- exquisitely impressive. This was our first stay at this location -- we usually stay at the Ritz in South Beach but it is currently closed and being renovated due to Hurricane damage last year. This was a beautiful property, within walking distance of shops and restaurants, readily available Uber pickups and drop-offs, and just an all around great location. We walked the beach path every morning to/from Starbucks for coffee and exercise. We only had one complaint, which isn't the hotel property's fault, but their beach is currently unusable. There is SO MUCH seaweed (one day it was a couple of feet deep / piled up on the beach) in their crescent shaped cove/beach area, and it really SMELLS awful -- such that you do not want to/cannot use their beach. It really is terrible. However, Haulover Beach State Park is a quick bike ride or Uber ride over the bridge, so finding a clean and very usable beach was not difficult at all! Thanks, Ritz-Carlton, for another great stay. We will definitely be back.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

We're about halfway through a 7 night stay. So far our experience has been mixed but ultimately disappointing. I was very excited for this trip. We are celebrating both our 15 year anniversary and my husband's 35th birthday. Our expectations were high as we were told by our family that the Ritz is very service-oriented.

The gentleman (Josh I believe is his name) at check-in was all business. My husband and I walk in (my husband is using crutches because he broke his ankle a few weeks ago), and there was no friendliness. No questions asking us why we're visiting or where we're from or "Do you need any special accommodations?" Or even "How was your trip here?" Just an exchange of IDs and papers and "Here's your key and the bellman will show you to your room." Giancarlo (who showed us to our room) was super friendly, helpful, and informative. He even brought us ice for our room.

The other guest reviews that rave about nice thoughtful touches (like chocolate strawberries, champagne, or cake) sent up to the room for birthdays or anniversaries... we've seen nothing of that. Overall, our experience has been that when we ask for something, we are politely obliged, but truly stellar service is when your needs are anticipated. The one big exception is Daniel at the beachside service. He was very attentive, offered to bring a bag of ice for my husband's foot, brought us cold water, and checked up on us regularly. He was great.

Yes, the staff is nice but MOST of the time I have to approach them with my needs. We are now on day 4, and we have not gotten ice in our room unless we call and ask for it. My husband will struggle with his foot gear to open gates and no one helps him (except the one time I asked someone to).

The strangest experience was yesterday. It was the third day I had ordered a virgin frozen drink while on the beach. The other 2 times, I was asked my room number, the drink was brought, and that was it. But yesterday, the attendant insisted that I sign a receipt. To our shock, our receipt was for over $21... for a virgin drink? Also, the gratuity was automatically added (nevermind that I had already tipped the attendant with cash). My husband went to talk to the pool bartender and found out that the virgin frozen drinks are actually $12. So my husband stopped by the front desk and talked to Josh. My husband looked at our room charges thus far and saw that all of the drinks I had ordered had been charged as alcoholic drinks. Josh said he would look into it. A while later, we get a call to our room, and Josh precedes to say he'll only give us a $10 credit. No apologies were given. My husband reiterated that he wanted to be charged the correct amount, and have the tax and tip recalculated to reflect the correct amount. Josh once again said he had to talk to his supervisor. This is a 5 star hotel and they're fighting us over a few dollars? It was truly, truly bizarre. Josh calls back again, haggled and argued with my husband and then very reluctantly said he'd give us a credit for all of the drinks. Still, no apology. When we hung up, we just looked at each other like "What just happened?!" It has left the worst taste in our mouth about this place.

We still have a few days left, and I'm determined to enjoy this trip no matter what. It's a kid-free week for us and I'm not going to let anything ruin this special celebration. But still... it's been very bizarre to say the least.

UPDATE:

It has taken me awhile to update my review because of the craziness of summer and three kids.

The day after writing my original review, I received a phone call from the hotel manager apologizing for the way we had been treated. She was very nice. As someone who has worked in customer service, I understand the value of critical feedback in order to improve services in the future. After the phone call, we headed out to the beach where we were approached by another manager who also apologized. Everyone was very kind and sought to make our trip memorable from that time forward. We were determined to enjoy ourselves regardless, but their efforts were very much appreciated. Overall, we really enjoyed our trip. The hotel is beautiful and very well-maintained. There is a long walk out to the pool and beach area, which is something that should be considered if you have mobility issues. The beach does have a lot of seaweed, but if you're willing to wade out past it, you will love how clear and beautiful the water is. Bring some snorkeling gear (or buy some at a local store). There are many beautiful schools of fish to see out by the cove.

The area is very expensive. We found no mid-priced restaurants to eat within walking distance ($50-60 for 2 people to eat -- no alcohol-- is not mid-priced in my book). There is a Publix within walking distance where we bought pre-made sandwiches and snacks to eat on the beach. Room service is very pricey (for example -- ~$20 for two eggs and toast for one person, not including a mandatory room service fee and tip.) If you're staying on a Tuesday, there is a food truck event you can walk to with delicious food to choose from. Thank you to Felipe, the concierge, for that recommendation.

There is a courtesy car that works on a first come, first serve basis that runs from 11am - 9 pm. The car will take you within 6 miles of the hotel. If you need a ride outside of those hours, I'd recommend getting an Uber.

I'm glad that at the end of our trip, we were able to fully experience a 5-star hotel stay. I just wish we had experienced it from the beginning. I'm grateful for the prompt attention of the staff after our concerns were expressed.

As a platinum Marriott Rewards guest, I got the welcome email before my stay and I let them know that this was my bday gift to myself after 3 long, hard weeks of travel.

From the moment I drove onto the property to the moment I drove away, everything was stellar! The only thing Marc at the valet did not do is roll out the red carpet at my arrival. He confirmed my name on his list and a great short weekend began! He even knew it was my bday and was so gracious in his wishes.

Julia helped check me in. We connected in such a way, in such a short time, that it was like we were old friends. Instead of telling me where the lobby restroom is the next day, she literally walked me from the Artisan House to the restroom. It wasn't on her way, but she detoured for the sake of service! Who does that these days?? She is truly exceptional!

And then Pepe took me to my room. He was so helpful, professional and showed me all the details of my beautiful room. And a wonderful surprise of balloons, cupcakes, and chilled champagne was waiting for me! Sasha and her team went above and beyond! I am gluten-intolerant so when they confirmed the cupcakes were not safe, Sasha brought me chocolate covered strawberries in no time! I was over the moon with the excellent service and the beautiful room and I was only 1 hour into my stay!

I did go to the beach, but unfortunately, after a week of storms it was covered by so much seaweed. This is not the hotel's issue as the beach is public, but it was disappointing. However, the beach attendants were also very helpful and set me up like a queen on the comfortable chaises.

I decided stop by Artisan House to make a reservation but I was able to get a table right away, regardless of my beach attire. Do you know that the resort fee allows you 2 daily cocktails per room? I was travelling alone and the mojitos were too good to pass up! I had the charred octopus and a beet salad. Excellent!

The next day I met Erin and her friend at the Spa. Beautiful ladies! Richard and Boris by the pool are exceptional. Richard is constantly moving around, bringing guests cold water, or asking them if there is anything more he could do for them. Boris is a great PR guy! So friendly, generous, and fun, he will make you feel right at home and if you don't, he will do everything to make you feel so.

I unfortunately made a mess for Snezhana to clean up in the lobby, and she did so graciously and with a smile. She is a lovely romantic and does her work from the heart. She will bring sunshine to your day!

I know I have gushed on and on about the people I have met, but truly, they are exceptional. I have traveled to many hotels in quite a few countries, but these 2 nights were exceptionally extraordinary and it really was all the wonderful RC people that helped make it so. This stay truly was a 5-star experience that made me smile all weekend.

The property and the rooms are beautifully appointed, spotless, and well laid out. To get to the beach/pool, you do have to walk through a long underground tunnel, but it is pretty and calming. I wasn't a big fan of the pillows but the bed was quite comfortable and the amenities really nice! The property is right on Collins so there are plenty of food options within a short driving distance, the Bal Harbour Shops are close by too. Aventura Mall is not that far, but with traffic, it can be. For me, I did not even leave the property. I didn't have to and I didn't want to! Thank you Ritz Carlton Bal Harbour; you made everything special!

Sorry for the late post. Business adventures in the past week kept me away from T.A.
We’ve been to many Ritz-Carlton all over the country and this one is very unique and stylish due to it being a residence occupied building. The place is large, over looking the beautiful beach, intercostal, and Collins Ave. We stayed here due to an early flight Friday out of Opa Lacka Airport which was about 30 minutes away.

Great quick, easy, check-in at the front desk by JONATHAN who recognized us as Platinum Premiere Status. FOUADE who was assigned to help us with our luggage, led the way to the Baker Tower to our nicely appointed suite. He also gave us the tour of our huge, waterfront roomy suite. Well appointed and modern nice decor it’s what you expect from the Ritz-Carlton.

There’s no gift shop here, I collect a golf shirts from every Ritz-Carlton that I stay at!!! Thank you for the baseball cap!!! It’s very quiet and quant. Not your typical Hotel or resort. We did have dinner at the Artisan Beach House located in the main floor. See review.

We are just headed home from a fantastic 3 night stay at the Bal Harbour Ritz. We have stayed at multiple other locations and this Ritz exceeded our expectations. The staff was friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful (including a special trip to fetch koozies to keep our pool drinks cold). We were treated to a room upgrade after informing the resort that this was a very special get-away for us. We were placed in a presidential suite with wrap around balcony that was outstanding. Sitting and watching the boats come through while feeling the ocean breeze could not be more relaxing. The breakfast in the morning was also wonderful and kept us going until dinner time. Pool/beach food and drinks were expensive (as expected) but the friendly staff also made it worth it. We plan to make another trip to this Ritz in the future!
