How to Get There
Vacationed with wife and our 6 year old son. Awesome amenities and super friendly / attentive staff. Camp Watercolor was our son's favorite part (along with the made to order virgin daiquiries :).
Enjoyed every minute of our stay.
Ritz-Carlton prices, but no comparison. In bad need of refurbishing. It has really gone downhill since our last visit 2 years ago. On the positive side, staff was great. However, the room.......The desk looked like someone had hit it with a chain. The dimmer light was out on the nightstand clock, never replaced. The refrigerator had a foul oder. Replacement refrigerator had black mold inside. Stains on the carpet. Cigarette butts and trash on our patio. No excuse for this when paying $500 per night (includes resort fess and taxes).
For years I have seen the idyllic ads for Watercolor clearly putting it on my Florida bucket list. In my mind I imagined an intimate, 5-star boutique hotel on a private, luxurious beach. What I found was a nice area, with a staff that has not been trained how to address clientele, and a check-in policy that will not, under any circumstances, or, for any amount of money, allow you to check in prior to 4pm. Even when they are at 60% occupancy. It's like a time share. They are polite with a 'constant yes sir', but clearly have no answers and are not empowered to do anything, including make change for tips unless they are a manager. The rooms do not have a glimpse of the ocean unless you are on the 3rd or 4th floor. They have what is akin to a hospital curtain instead of a bathroom door. Whatever decorator thought that sliding white barn doors wouldn't work on this bathroom and a curtain is better, I don't know because it offers zero privacy. The shower has full glass from the shoulders up so there is no privacy there either. The bed was very comfortable and there were plenty of nice pillows, but the hall and room carpets were terribly stained. How about frosted glass, or textured glass so no one can see in! You are on a tight schedule of the beach being open only from 9-5 and chairs packed in like sardines even when it isn't busy. The food is ok, not amazing, but is reasonably priced. There is a gym on site that was well equipped but the yoga mats were nasty dirty and the walls in the stretching room were scuffed up and chipping. They are in the process of adding a kiddie pool and infinity pool in the beach club section. That will be a nice addition to the cramped facility. Prepare yourself for afternoons with lots of drunk, loud adults, who don't really care if you have young children with you or not. This is clearly a hotel that is past it's prime and isn't well managed. I wouldn't go back, but I am glad I was able to check it off my list. Based on the service and the condition of the hotel, this should be a 3.5 star hotel. This could be a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton type area, and at the prices they charge, it should be.
