How to Get There
If you like a quiet peacful resort with (almost) all the amenities then this is a great place. The beach area is great. The water park area is great. The staff is great. The pool is great. The rooms are wonderful.
Note: Each room/condo is privately owned so they vary in furnishings and up-keep. We typically get online and view the available condos and choose one that fits our desire.
We'd be going elsewhere. We've stayed here many times over the past 12 years, but this time it just felt a little "cheap". The decor in our unit was average this time. There was a major mishap with housekeeping and they did make it good, so I was pleased about that. We had two days of beach set up and they tried to bill us for one of them. We'll try it again just b/c we love this spot, but note to property management company - don't let the quality slip, please and thank you.
We have been coming to Portofino every year, typically multiple times per year, since 2005 with our family (first with our parents/grandparents, now with our own kids). Normally, I would say that we love Portofino, however, as I write this outside of our Tower at 12:34 AM with my small children (8,6,3 and 18 months in tow), I can no longer recommend Portofino. This early am “wake up” is the 5th CONSECUTIVE stay from 2018-2019 at Portofino (all in Towers 2&3) in which we have had to evacuate our condo during the middle of the early morning due to emergency fire alarms due to VAPING/VAPERS (per the firefighter and emergency responders we’ve spoken to)! People vaping in their room, which is idiotic in the first place, have resulted in our children being awoken in the middle of the night, startled and panicked, fearful for their lives, having to evacuate from the 10th, 11th, 14th and 16th floors! This is incredibly stressful for families with small children, as we have taught our children to treat any and all fire alarms as “real” and as a parent, so how could I ever take a chance that this alarm is not the “real” one, especially with my children’s lives in my hands and responsibility?! We already have stays booked for 2020 during Spring Break and a 3 week consecutive stay in the peak of June/July for Thr 4th and Blues weekend, which is quiet expensive to be honest, but now, with our “luck” of batting 1.0000% on fire evacuations at least one time during each one of our past 5 stays at Portofino, we are likely reconsidering our investment of vacation time and money at Portofino. During this stay, the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak, we have actually had to evacuate twice, once at 7:15 AM and again, now, at 12:34 AM, due to people vaping inside their rooms. This is an issue which Portifino MUST take more seriously and should endeavor to place stiff fines and consequences upon anyone violating these policies, as the disruption caused to families like ours is quiet simply inexcusable at the rate/frequency that it occurs. Furthermore, my “bad” review is primarily based upon the disruption to my family of small children, yet these same issues have caused incredible inconveniences to elderly guests as well, as during our last stay at Portifino, and fire evacuation #4, myself and another gentleman that is an owner, stayed behind our families to escort a 93 year old gentlemen down the steps, fearful that if it were a true fire, he would need us to carry him down the flights of steps from his 16th floor condo stay. I am not sure how Portofino fixes this issue, but clearly far better efforts must be undertaken by them to do so than what they have chosen to do currently!
