- The restaurant is located in the inn so rooms nearby may be a bit noisy
Your eyes are in for a treat at this getaway, which is a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner. The architecture of all the various buildings references charming traditional Northeastern styles, but the Inn at Taughannock’s 1873 Main Inn shows off elaborate Victorian ornamentation that evokes a real-life dollhouse. Off the grounds, continue to feast your eyes; you’re adjacent to Taughannock Falls State Park’s main cascade, which is taller than any others east of the Rockies, including those of Niagara.
You’re also just a short drive from downtown Ithaca, where 150 more waterfalls, plus Cornell’s stately ivy-draped campus, offer yet more picturesque scenery. But don’t forget to feast your tastebuds, too. Just near the Select Registry inn is the starting point of the Cayuga Wine Trail, encompassing an extensive variety of breweries, cideries, distilleries and wineries that have collectively won more than 6,000 national and international medals.
Accommodations are distributed among four different buildings, including the historic Victorian Main Inn, where the restaurant is located. They’re individually designed and decorated, but all feature complimentary Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a refrigerator. You’ll be in the Edgewood building, where every room comes with a balcony that overlooks the lake. It also includes a convenient kitchenette.

The Finger Lakes are a famously scenic region in central New York, and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore them. There’s plenty of shopping in the area, and winter visitors will enjoy the area skiing terrain. Drive to Ithaca for a wander around the Cornell campus or a look at one of the 150 waterfalls – though the soaring one at Taughannock Falls State Park (adjacent to the inn), which is the tallest east of the Rockies, upstages them all. Also consider following the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, home to an array of award-winning wineries, breweries and cideries.
How to Get There
very well maintained Inn. Easy walking distance to taughannock falls. ( a must see). walk across street to the state park to get a wonderful view of Cayuga lake. visit local wineries. Be sure to visit other waterfalls in the Ithacca area
Very poor customer service. Tried working out details of wedding venue contract. Took them over 2 months and still never got a contract. Once tried to finalize and get in writing all that had been agreed upon changed pricing. Also changed staff in middle of negotiations-- would go weeks without return of calls. So frustrating---made a fun time stressful. Beware.
We stayed here a week ago for 3 nights. After 9 hours of driving and setting up our son at a local college, we arrived at the hotel and was greeted by a somewhat frantic host. We bought 2 glasses of wine at the small bar beautifully designed after Napoleon Bonaparte, and Gigi admitted she was frazzled and apologized.
Our room was in Edgewood, 2 double queen beds, simply decorated with a microwave and fridge. The bathroom was nice and new. I asked housekeeping to clean the bathroom floors as it was a bit dirty with sneaker marks from previous guests, but housekeeping didn't clean it the entire time we were there -they vacuumed, but not mop. The comforter cover also needed changing from the previous guest as there was some encrusted stain on it. Overall, it needed some detailed cleaning like dusting and cleaning corners. The room had a nice balcony with some lake views. The beds were a little soft for me and the pillows didn't fluff. I'm very particular, I suppose.
Free breakfast could be more interesting. I like the idea of frittata, but the one they served was watery --my husband didn't mind it. Or maybe switch the recipe or serve hard boiled eggs. The fresh berries, house breads and lox & capers were great.
When you travel around Europe, one gets used to the quality of breakfast that's serve as standard. However, this is the US and breakfast is not always a given, even though the rates suggests breakfast should be included. We also had a delicious dinner at the restaurant.
As for the location, the lake is across the road and entrance to Taughannouk Falls is a short walk away. Ithaca is 13 miles away. The location of the hotel is very convenient -well situated. I heard the property was acquired a short time ago. I think there's a lot of potential and quality is being added to it. Yes, there's construction going on, but if you're out and about most of the day, it won't bother you. The staff is nice and helpful.
My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary with a long weekend at the Inn. The room was clean and had all the amenities you would expect. The staff was very helpful and answered all of our questions. The continental breakfast was a perfect starter for the day, and the brunch on Sunday was awesome. We had a wonderful dinner on Friday night and enjoyed late night drinks by the gas fire pit on both nights. There was a lot of construction in the area, but they didn't work at all during weekend and it didn't diminish the overall charm of the Inn.
Two gripes that kept this from being a five star review. The first (albeit small) was that there wasn't an additional amenity for our anniversary (bottle of wine, flowers in the room, chocolate, etc). The second (much more frustrating) was that the construction had eliminated the balcony from our room. That was the primary reason we selected this particular room, and nothing on their website mentioned the removal of the balcony, nor was it mentioned when we made our reservation. When I brought it up with the guest staff, I just got a shrug of the shoulders and a "sorry about that". For the money we spent on the room, this should havr been disclosed to us.
Impressed by the numerous building the Inn has. Room was spacious and cheery. Bed and pillows very comfortable. Provided a balcony to sit on with room. Continental breakfast was provided in the main building. View of the lake was perfect.
