Inn at Taughannock
What We Love
- A low-key Select Registry hideout in the Finger Lakes region, including optional wine extrasViewing the lake from your very own room at the Select Registry getaway
- Beholding a taller waterfall than those of Niagara, just minutes from your door
- Having the option to add on a wine tasting and a bottle of wine at Thirsty Owl Wine Company
What To Know
- Located above Cayuga Lake at Taughannock Falls State Park
- Guestrooms in the Main House have Victorian four-poster beds
- The restaurant is located in the inn so rooms nearby may be a bit noisy
Your eyes are in for a treat at this getaway, which is a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner. The architecture of all the various buildings references charming traditional Northeastern styles, but the Inn at Taughannock’s 1873 Main Inn shows off elaborate Victorian ornamentation that evokes a real-life dollhouse. Off the grounds, continue to feast your eyes; you’re adjacent to Taughannock Falls State Park’s main cascade, which is taller than any others east of the Rockies, including those of Niagara.
You’re also just a short drive from downtown Ithaca, where 150 more waterfalls, plus Cornell’s stately ivy-draped campus, offer yet more picturesque scenery. But don’t forget to feast your tastebuds, too. Just near the Select Registry inn is the starting point of the Cayuga Wine Trail, encompassing an extensive variety of breweries, cideries, distilleries and wineries that have collectively won more than 6,000 national and international medals.
Accommodations are distributed among four different buildings, including the historic Victorian Main Inn, where the restaurant is located. They’re individually designed and decorated, but all feature complimentary Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a refrigerator. You’ll be in the Edgewood building, where every room comes with a balcony that overlooks the lake. It also includes a convenient kitchenette.

The Finger Lakes are a famously scenic region in central New York, and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore them. There’s plenty of shopping in the area, and winter visitors will enjoy the area skiing terrain. Drive to Ithaca for a wander around the Cornell campus or a look at one of the 150 waterfalls – though the soaring one at Taughannock Falls State Park (adjacent to the inn), which is the tallest east of the Rockies, upstages them all. Also consider following the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, home to an array of award-winning wineries, breweries and cideries.
How to Get There
My husband and I stayed one night. We were a little unsure about staying outside of Ithaca, but it was fine. It’s a short and easy 7 miles to Ithaca. It was well worth the trip. The hotel is beautiful. Our room was huge, clean, and elegantly decorated. Our king size bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Even our bathroom was great. We ate dinner there too. Our daughter joined us. The food was so tasty, full of flavor and not heavy. Even the free breakfast in the morning was much more than we expected. The staff went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect! There’s even coffee and water in the hallway outside our room. The fire pit on the patio was a nice touch to have for our evening drink outside. Carl, the really friendly owner, is building an outside fireplace and setting up the grounds to accommodate outdoor parties. I can’t wait to see how this comes out. Another plus is it’s location. Overlooks the river and a short walk to the falls.
This Inn is a real gem!!!! Can’t wait to come back!!!
My husband and I stayed in the Main Inn for the weekend, while visiting our daughter at Cornell. There are
Multiple reasons to choose this Bed and Breakfast.
1) Location was close enough to visit the schools and also wineries along the lake.
2) The views of Lake Cayuga and the Nearby falls were breathtaking. I spent each morning gazing out the windows while noshing on soft buttery croissants, strong coffee and fresh fruit.
3) The bed was comfy. Not too hard and not too soft.
4) Our room overlooked the front of the property and the Lake. Spectacular!!!
5) Clean rooms with modern amenities all in an authentic Victorian Inn.
The breakfast was plentiful and all you can eat. Continental and American breakfast offered.
Make a reservation for the restaurant in the evening. We ate dinner our first night there and enjoyed our meal. Service was attentive, knowledgeable and kind.
He innkeeper, Lloyd was engaging and thoughtful gentleman. I will be coming back to visit as he made our experience memorable.
This is a nice getaway from the “beltway” and we cannot wait to immerse ourselves in the tranquil environment of Taughannock.
I rarely give out 5 stars, but my husband and I had a really great stay, barring a few things. We would come again, and would recommend staying here to anyone looking to get away from the busyness of life/work. The value of this hotel was the best of the places we stayed at on our long weekend trip. We stayed one night at Edgewood, which is a lovely property. If you have mobility issues, book yourself on the second floor, which is level with the parking lot, but the ice machine/chest is on the first floor. If you come on the weekends, the restaurant is open for both breakfast and dinner. But you are close enough to Trumansburg and Ithaca by car that it shouldn't be a big deal during the week.
-The hotel is right next to Taughannock Falls State Park, which you must visit! It's accessible from the front of the main building, where there's a path (though we discovered this only after warily venturing onto the shoulder of the street below). There is a lot of construction going on where the path starts at the hotel so not sure how much longer that will be accessible. Check out a park map. There's more to do in the park and it goes right to the lake.
-The property is clean and beautiful, except for where there's construction at the main house and possibly the house in front of Edgewood.
-Our room rate was really good, and we didn't have any special discounts.
-Our room is very quiet! We could not hear the construction or the traffic from our room with the doors closed. My husband is very sensitive to noises, so this was a pleasant discovery. Our fellow Edgewood guests were also very quiet people.
-The bathroom comes equipped with plenty of toiletries, a heating lamp on the ceiling, and a slow-close toilet seat (husband really liked this...).
-The room has a Keurig coffee maker, more Keurig coffee cups than I've seen in an individual hotel room, various teas, various sugars, plenty of creamer, free water bottles, a microwave, a mini fridge, a TV, free Lindt chocolates, and a really nice private balcony!
-The blankets are thick and heavy, and the mattress is thick and soft.
-Laundry machine use in Edgewood is complimentary and I believe the soap is included. We did not use this though.
-Dinner was delicious and expertly prepared! The waitstaff were very pleasant.
-The views are very beautiful, both in the dining room and from our balcony.
-Breakfast was delicious and complimentary! It's a buffet setup with yogurt, granola, various fruits, cereal cups, milk, various juices, teas, honey, coffee, bagels/breads/muffins/croissants, jams, freshly scrambled eggs, bacon, and home fries.
-Service from all staff we encountered was friendly and welcoming.
CONS: You'd think there wouldn't be any if I gave it 5 stars, but these are minor things....
-This is more of an FYI than a con, but dinner was VERY expensive...but the ambience and service were great! We also did anticipate that it would be expensive, and the great room rate and awesome breakfast were enough to make up for it, but still, just be prepared! :)
-The main building is undergoing construction, and the side/front area of it is also undergoing construction. I have no idea how this affects people who stay in the main building but I can imagine it would be noisier. The construction project is meant to allow the property to better accommodate wedding parties in the future.
