How to Get There
Macdonald Rusacks Hotel is situated in a splendid location overlooking the old course at St Andrews. I don’t know if they have more than one car park but when we looked at the one just past the front of the hotel on Links Road it was full, but we were able to find a spot on Links Road which, remarkably, had absolutely no restrictions.
Reception was friendly and efficient and the public rooms were all nicely furnished and simply exuded relaxation and comfort. Our room on the first floor was also very smart, nicely appointed and very comfortable.
Breakfast was served in a lovely room overlooking the golf course and West Sands beach, and service was charming. There were two main aspects to the breakfast, and the continental part was very good, with a fine selection of fresh fruits, ham, cheese etc.
The second part of the breakfast concerns the cooked options, and this was decidedly average. My wife and I both had the full cooked breakfast and, as other reviewers have frequently pointed out, everything seemed to be based on the factor of “one” - i.e. it included one thin sausage, one mushroom (honest!), and one very small, thin slice of bacon. More to the point, the bacon was a most unappetising grey colour and looked as though it had been hanging around the kitchen for some time. We both gave it a miss.
I notice that the management team here regularly respond to Trip Advisor reviews with all the expected platitudes and promises of action when things are considered unsatisfactory, yet I wonder if they really give a jot about them. As an example, if you search the reviews of this hotel for the word “bacon” you will see several comments about the paltry size of the thing and its poor quality - yet they are still churning it out today.
Anyway, to move on: apart from the relatively poor quality of the cooked breakfast, I must say that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this very good hotel and would certainly use it again.
Our room was lovely and the service at afternoon tea and in the bar was excellent. However cannot say the same about breakfast. On our second morning we waited quite a while to be seated. There were no glasses for orange juice and by the time they brought glasses there was no juice left. There was no milk for cereal. They brought tea but no cups despite asking - we had to ask for fresh tea and chase cups. The toast came and no butter. The hot breakfasts came and they had items missing too. I was so looking forward to staying at what I thought would be a luxury hotel however I was disappointed. There was lots of staff running around - just seemed to be a lack of management of them. I emailed the hotel group to express my disappointment only to be ignored. My husband and I had just got married and this should have been a special stay for us.
Really enjoyed my stay at the Rusacks Hotel. Beautiful room with a lovely view of the Old Course. The food in the Surf & Turf Restaurant was delicious and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.
