Modern, minimalist and five-star, Vidamar Resort Algarve, 10 minutes from Albufeira by car, shows off sparkling panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Sitting at the ocean’s edge on the coast of Portugal’s balmy Algarve, or southernmost region, it has direct access to sandy Salgados Beach on one side and overlooks a golf course and peaceful nature reserve on the other.
The hotel exudes a tranquil ambience from its whitewashed walls, panels of glass, natural materials and shady palm-scattered grounds, creating a seriously chilled-out vibe both inside and out. Dip into the outdoor pools and spend a day (or three) trying out the wellness treatments at the health club and soaking in the sauna and steam bath. Dine on Japanese, Italian and fresh seafood and sample expertly mixed cocktails at the Gin Bar.
How to Get There
On arriving at hotel found the Reception area to be very welcoming shame the staff on the desk were so rude, while dealing with us kept speaking in Portuguese to other holiday makers , this happened twice and the rudeness of staff continued the duration of the holiday, with very few exceptions.
The hotel room was lovely but let down by the sofa in room had so many rips and tears needs removal or recovering
The sun beds around the swimming pools were the same in a very poor state
The plus for this hotel was breakfast, it was fantastic from every angle, so much choice absolutely everything you could possibly want
First visit to Portugal would return again but not to this hotel due to rudeness of staff
It is with much regret that I have to write this review.We had a 10 night stay at the Vidamar Hotel in Salgados, Algarve. The Star rating of 5* is a real let down, the hotel may appear to be 5*, but everything else falls very short of this rating.In comparison to another hotel we stayed at in the Algarve, also rated 5*, the Vidamar is way behind in every aspect. The service, price of food and drink, the qualiy of food and drink, the standard of room, the attentiveness of staff, the facilities on offer, selection of restaurants, the attention to detail in every aspect, lack of interaction of staff with guests, standards of guest dress when in the hotel reception area (men with no tops on), no complimentary water at the pool, no menus on show or available to review for the restaurants, sun loungers around the pool tired and in need of replacing, uneven surface around the pool (one elderly guest tripped and fell and no member of staff took any notice never mind help them) which a guest covered with a small table, the adult only area was not open (this was September, still quite hot for the time of year). It seemed to be that the resort decided to stick to thier seasonal timetable even although the weather was extraordinarily hot for the time of year. Surely as a hotel you would consider the guests and the exceptional weather and keep things open for the benifit of all.Within the hospitality industry it is important to make every guest feel special and welcome in your establishment, not an inconvenience and an extra obsticale in the day to day running of the hotel. Surely as a "5* resort" they would want to provide the best service and offer the maximum facilities that they can, regardless that it should be an area that is closed because of the time of year. With certain areas being closed the management missed out on the full package available to their guests. Surely gauge each day according to the weather and not a timetable, not a good management model at all.As dissapointed guests at an over rated and over priced resort we will not be returning as it is in it's current state. The resort did not feel 5* and everything else wasn't 5*, more like a fancy package holiday hotel.
Absolutely terrible staff - impolite people, we had to wait 30min on average to get drinks for dinner; at the checkout out the bill was overstated by significant amount- the justification was that on Booking.com there is only price estimation ... after 30min we got back the money, but there was no excuse whatsoever. Never has such a bad experience with staff before - unbelievable for 5stars hotel ....
The family room is also not real family room, as it’s quite small - it includes half open shower and WC - good for a couple only! With kids, especially teenagers definitely not recommend as there is no privacy
In plus: Location, Restaurant outside with Great view; great outdoor pools ( especially for kids)
I feel that it would be irresponsible and unfair not to write a review on our recent wedding at the Vidamar, also I wouldn’t be doing them real justice if i were to try and fit this review in the normal 2 paragraphs so apologies for the length. So it all started for us (my now wife and I) back in Jun 2017 when 2 others and myself visited the Algarve with one aim in mind; to find a wedding location that would deliver an ‘on the beach ceremony’!! It felt a bit like I was on ‘Don’t tell the bride’!?!?!? With a short list of 12 (5 star) hotels we took to the challenge hire car, sat nav to hand off we set. Even though each visit was scheduled our arrival were met with an array of welcomes, some hotels simply weren’t bothered, others (high end) believed that they were too important to talk to us even though they had agreed to our meetings! The Vidamar was our last hotel to visit and we certainly saved the best one until last. We were met promptly by Vanessa, who afforded us a full walk around the hotel, facilities and viewing of the beach location, we actually viewed a wedding taking place, answered all our questions, she topped it all off with running down to the kitchen to get us some freshly baked custard tarts (a very nice touch especially as I am a chef) Aesthetics and facilities wise I was in love with one of recently visited high end hotels but I was totally held by the warmth of Vanessa introduction and the Vidamar’s culture. So after quite a bit of deliberation we booked with the Vidamar, bearing in mind this was 18 months prior there wasn’t many dates available, so they must be doing something right :-)
On my return to the UK my wife to be contacted Vanessa to start the mammoth task of getting down to the nitty gritty of planning our wedding. On every occasion our emails phone calls were responded to in a professional and timely manner. Then we received that dreaded message I’m sorry to inform you that I’m moving on to another hotel!! OMG I thought what will happen now........ In steps Anne the new Senior Event Co-ordinator, the transition was seamless our fears were quickly allayed and it was quite evident that Anne and her team were all over everything.
Prior to visiting Portugal we did consider employing a wedding planner but after meeting Anne’s team I felt it would be a waste of money (which I now can confirm it would have been)! Over the forthcoming months we spoke, emailed and even met up with Anne at the London Wedding Show, which was fantastic for us. We left feeling our wedding was in great hands. As the months ticked by we kept in contact and the team provided us with numerous great leads for the supporting pieces (flowers, dJ, decorations, lawyers)etc.
On arrival to Portugal we met with Anne on our first day to run though the final bits (she left no stone unturned) it was quite evident that though she had a lot on her plate, however nothing was too much for her and her team, she even manages to squeeze in a bit of personal TLC in the way of some last minute nerve calming and reassurance (thank you)
The day of the wedding Anne’s professional status came to the forth, she control everything in such a way that could only be described as official, professional but most sincere. Without a doubt she cared, and wanted us to have the best day! The service team (waiters and bar) were fantaisc and even joined in with a little dancing end of the night. A massive pat on the back must go to the chef’s that provided fantastic food throughout the whole event it was outstanding.
Overall this was the best day of my life and the Vidamar certainly played a massive part in making that happen.
If you are thinking for getting married in anywhere in Europe, I can unequivocally recommend this hotel.
Have just returned from an excellent weeks holiday. From the moment we arrived to the time we left the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful and had a great sense of humour.
We had rooms facing the golf course and nature reserve. It was spotless and the housekeeping service was first class. The room was comfortable as well as spacious.
The food was great and the selection was varied and when dishes were empty they were replenished quickly. No complaints. If they were cooking the local dishes or grilling fish it was easy to get one straight from the grill. Hot and good. A tip for those new to the buffet style - always walk the room before choosing and check out all the dishes before launching into the plate filling.
We like an early morning walk and the whole area along the beach is perfect with several kilometres in each direction and the nature reserve can be easily walked around.
The beach was great with several beach bars/restaurants serving inexpensive food from snacks to full blown meals at lunch time.
We chose the Vidamar because we have been to the sister hotel in Funchal and were pleased to see this was as good as that one. We read some of the negative reviews and were slightly concerned but need not have been. Everyone we met at the hotel was having a great time.
We definitely will be back - Thank you Vidamar staff.
