Impeccably restored Tudor-style mansion turned B&B, within walking distance of Lake Michigan beaches and Northwestern University’s campus
This recently restored landmark property dates back to 1889, when Chicago manufacturing magnate Edward Franklin Brown built the Tudor-style home. Three more families lived in the sprawling stone property before it was converted into a bed-and-breakfast in 2014. Today the decor throughout the five suites and common areas recalls the property’s history without forgetting the details — think freestanding soaking tubs, marble tile bathroom floors and vintage French doors — while the color scheme takes inspiration from Lake Michigan’s many shades of blue, olive and white. Wake up to views of the sparkling water in the Lakefront Suite or the Lakeview Balcony Suite, but rest assured that all guests may feast their eyes on the shores from the main dining room, where gourmet breakfast is served daily. You’ll have the run of the well-manicured grounds, which feature a large bluestone patio with a 15-foot stone fireplace, as well as comfy indoor common areas with fluffy couches and a guest kitchen stocked with hot drinks and breakfast snacks.
In the Area
Urban living meets lakefront charm in Evanston, a Chicago suburb just north of the city limits (and home to Northwestern University). In the summer, walk one block east to Clark Street Beach to tan and splash around with views of the Chicago skyline in the distance. Or hike 1.3 miles up to Grosse Point Lighthouse, a 113-foot brick and concrete tower built in 1873. The Fresnel lens that first topped the lighthouse could project a beam 21 miles over the lake, a safeguard against the shipwrecks that had become common during Chicago’s heyday as a port. Small group tours of the historic property are available on weekends from June through September. In football season cheer on the Northwestern Wildcats at Ryan Field, or simply satisfy your inner college kid with a walk around the 240-acre campus — the oldest building dates back to 1868.
