Hip but not haughty, the Avalon is a design hotel—which means every detail was carefully planned. The 101 rooms are paragons of mod minimalism and have bathrobes, slippers, flatscreen TVS, and, in some cases, a bathtub in the center of the room. The same care is lavished on drinks at the popular bar and the Swedish specialties in the restaurant. Guests who love the modern décor and funky vibe linger on site despite the temptations of Göteburg’s nightlife all around them.
In the Area
Smack in the heart of Kungsportsplaten, the famed nightlife district, the Avalon is perfectly situated for exploring the city’s music and bar scene. But there’s plenty to see in the daytime, too. The hotel is within walking distance of Baltespannarparken, a popular park that hosts a skating rink in winter; the Göteborg City Museum; the Maritiman Museum on board a fleet of historic ships; and the Göteborg Opera. It’s also deliciously close to Östermalms Saluhall, the city’s historic food hall, so you can taste the best the city has to offer by day and listen to its finest music by night.
How to Get There
Stayed one night and was in the best location to hit town. The hotel has ben around for some years, but is really well maintained and close to spotless. The design furniture, the art and the large rooms are the best features.
The lack of amenities made my stay a bit of a hassle. Was convinced there would be body lotion and cotton pads in a hotel of this standard...but unfortunately not.
The breakfast was good, but not great. A huge plus for the homemade seed crispbread😋.
Would definitely return.
Awesome! Every stay in avalon is a pleasure, the staff is very friendly and the lication superb. Also worth to mention: great breakfast!
If you like to be in the city center of Gothenburg this is the hotel to stay at!
As you can see from my reviews, I have visited and reviewed quite a few hotels in Gothenburg. This was the first time we stayed at Hotel Avalon and this is probably the best hotel we have ever stayed in Gothenburg. What distinguishes the hotel from others is the central location, the consistently friendly staff and the familiar atmosphere they create. The breakfast service is also the most peaceful we experienced in hotels in Gothenburg.
The hotel is close to both the Avenue and the shops in the center. There is a tram stop close by.
In the ground floor there is a nice bar that serves lovely very special cocktails and it is also here that breakfast is served in the morning and for lunch and evening it also serves as a restaurant. On the top floor there is a swimming pool which is open in the summer and which we did not visit. Close to the entrance there are spaces with lounge chairs. We had a standard room which was normal in size and modern. The room had many practical facilities. Wifi is free and works well. TV is available with several international channels in different languages. The hotel offers water bottles and there is a kettle so you can make your own coffee or tea. There is a minibar and a safety deposit box. The bed was nice to sleep in and there are electric sockets at the bedside tables so you can charge your phone. In the closet there is an extra chair if you want to sit at a desk and work.
The bathroom had a large shower and double sink.
The breakfast was a smaller but very well-stocked buffet. Unusually enough for Swedish hotels they served very good and real fresh fruit juices. The bread selection was also unusually fresh. We especially liked the fact that there were Skagenröra and peeled shrimp so one could make your own shrimp sandwich for breakfast. Otherwise there were all sorts of toppings. There were muesli and nuts and yogurt. Coffee is served from a machine. As hot dishes there were scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes. The pancakes were exceptionally good. The environment in the breakfast room was tranquil and the staff were quick to clean up after every guest.
We had a fantastic stay and there is really no reason to stay at any other hotel in Gothenburg. This hotel has it all.
Great hotel in the city centre. Worth paying extra for one of the «panorama rooms». Stunning view and spacious room with nice bathroom and comfortable bed. We ordered room-service one night, which was not bad, but I much prefer going to one of the many restaurants in the area. Nice breakfast with a fair selection of hot and cold dishes.
Stayed at the Avalon for two nights on business recently. Location is perfect, everything is in walking distance and it’s location right next to the food halls of Gothenburg came in handy when wanting to buy some gourmet snacks without wanting to go to a generic supermarket. There are heaps of food options and watering holes around.
The hotel as such is very trendy and colourful. It’s even Feng Shui certified!! Lobby is a tad small and can get crowded when large groups check in. Having said that, check in was fast and efficient. The room floors are a bit of a maze as the hotel extends out a lot more than it seems, looking at it from the outside. Luckily, the signage is good so not too much time is spend searching for ones room.
Room as such was spacious and comfy. Amenities as to be expected, I did miss some conditioner though. I never quite understand why hotels that are not 5 stars don’t have conditioner. It’s not exactly a luxury item.. more like a necessity for every female I know.
My room overlooked the shopping street below, which was a little noisy at night, but to be expected from a city centre hotel.
The noise insulation within the hotel needs some work though ... I could hear the upstairs guest stomp and move around quite a bit.
I didn’t have any meals at the hotel so can’t comment on the dining scene, except the breakfast, which was very good!!
Only little niggle is that my (and some of my fellow travellers’) room key cards kept locking us out. We needed to go to the lobby on a few occasions to get the card re-programmed.
Other than that, it was a perfectly good stay.
