How to Get There
We hiked in and out of Fonte de Medice, and it was such a delight to come upon in the middle of the vineyards and olive groves! Charming old buildings comfortably restored, an ambiance of luxury with simplicity, and a good restaurant with sublime views.
The staff were unfailingly helpful and polite.
We came here for my friends wedding and it was perfect. The site itself is absolutely stunning. The rooms were spacious and beds were so so comfortable - had the best sleep! The pool is wonderful and enjoyed the breakfast on offer. The staff in the restaurant were very friendly and accommodating.
We stayed at the Fonte de Medici for a good friend's wedding. The farm complex is huge and we were staying at one of the farmhouses/apartments 1.5km from the main building with it's own pool. Idyllic building with it's own kitchen, comfy bedrooms, bathrooms, AC and large open windows/views. A real adventure exploring the surroundings!
Breakfast and all meals served were great
The wedding itself was amazing - the service, the food, wine and setting couldn't have been better. The staff all work incredibly hard and couldn't be friendlier when we had questions or help was required
Short distance to supermarkets, Florence and the Antinori winery and the like
Thanks for a great time, all at Fonte de Medici :)
It’s a pleasant spot to spend holidays in Toscana. The décor and setting is charming and romantic. Our superior room was amazingly spacious and cozy. The swimming pool was attractive, particularly in warmer summer days. The restaurant is fine, and has a nice view. We had a risotto for dinner which I’d recommend. The breakfast buffet is simple, but sufficient, and includes fresh fruits, nice coffee, bread, pastries and mildly warm scrambled eggs. We also appreciated the fact that near the hotel we could explore excellent cuisines and charming medieval boroughs. We however felt that a few services could be improved. Foam mattresses and pillows are not so comfortable. The plastic mattress cover is uncomfortable, but it can be retracted by the room service upon request. By the way, room service seemed a little basic, and could be improved (dirty wine glasses were left in the room and we could notice the floor had not been cleaned. The air conditioner is a little noisy and cold. We could not raise the room temperature. Perhaps with some help from room service it could be done. We had an incident at the restaurant when we arrived for dinner without a booking. The place was full, but the waiter said he would find me a table at the terrace in a few minutes. I though it was fine and ordered a glass of wine. I was offered a temporary table that had been cleared but had not yet been cleaned while I waited. Well, after a longer wait than expected, I realized that the table I was waiting for had been taken by other guest who arrived later. Although our reception had been disappointing, the waitress who served later, when we were seated at a table in the back, was amazingly friendly. Perhaps a little personal training to some staff would help. We would be looking forward to return, and hopefully, some of these issues can be looked at beforehand.
It is with great regret we are writing this review and normally we would not, as we do not like to give poor ratings and everyone can have a bad day. We are still doing so.....
As we have been to FDM several times earlier (previously a two years ago were we spent several nights) and we just loved the place we wanted to spend one or two nights here again recently to Finnish off our Toscana vacation before going back to Zurich.
As FDM was fully booked we were offered an apartment at Podere Tignanello just above the Tignanello vineyard. The apartment was spacious, nice, clean and with proper aircondition, so we were happy when we arrived the flat (at 300 EUR p/n).
After a swim at the nice pool at FDM we had a glas of wine and ice cream for the children before we changed for dinner. My wife paid for the wine as the service minded waiter said "we'll forget the ice cream".
As it was high season the restaurant was fully booked and almost full when we arrived for dinner around 7:30 pm. We got a table back on the side of the terrasse and everything went well until we had made our reservation and received our food, but from there it seemed as we were totally forgotten and we had to send the children to ask the waiter to access our table for follow up orders and also to receive the bill. It seemed to us as they had to many guests at the restaurant or to to few at work because everything was very slow....
At check out the day after I paid all outstanding and even paid again for the wine and ice cream we had after the swim the day before..... I was not sure if my wife had paid so I mentioned it to her as I thought it was a bit strange... She went back in to confront them with it as she had paid it the day before.... It was not a large amount but a principle. - Paid is paid.
At the reception they first denied that this could be fact as "we never give away anything for free" - one of the ladies expressed. My wife explained what had happened and that she could very well go back to the apartment to pick up the receipt.... The woman in the reception look straight at her and rolled her eyes and gave back some money, although my wife realised on the outside of the door that she had received less than half of the amount so she went back in. Then the lady at the reception immediately rolled her eyes again when my wife made them aware that they had not received all - after some arguing the woman behind the counter gave back the rest amount while demonstrating by putting her hand with the cash a bit harder at the desk......
Again: The amount was not large, although it really doesn't matter - paid is paid and no-one should think it is ok to pay two times.
We have been really happy about this place in the past and we have recommended it to family, friends and even business connections. We even took friends along to experience this charming place with us in the past and I am really sorry that we experienced it this way as it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I discussed it with another local guy that we have learned to know during our past visits. We told him about our disappointment and his reaction was that he was very sorry and that he hoped they just had a "bad day" as FDM and Antinori is very important to the local farmers as it attracts people to the region.
I really hope so to and I am writing this poor review in hope that FDM will get back to past service levels so we can come back and enjoy this charming location again in the future. I would also hope that they go back to serve all Antinori wines as they used to to in the past as it was a great disappointment when we learned that they did not any longer serve the fantastic Cervaro Della Sala at the restaurant. We really had been looking forward to enjoy a few glas of this wine looking at the sunset over the vineyards.
