Castello di Tornano is a great beauty in the tranquil countryside of Italy’s Chianti region. From the minute you cross the threshold of this imposing 11th-century castle and winery, you’ll find that things feel reassuringly noble. You could say the property has attained a modern-day nobility, too – in the form, that is, of a glowing TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
If you’ve ever dreamed of spending a luxurious night in a castle, you won’t be disappointed. Castello is a master class in soothing interiors and staggeringly beautiful scenery, with all the magnificent luxury you’d expect from a real-life court. Spend your days strolling over the undulating hills and the working olive groves and vineyards, or simplykick back and bathe in the balmy sunshine, take a dip in the hotel’s moat-turned-pool, and feel pretty noble yourself.
Your room is rich and warmly decorated, with deep wood, burnt amber and terra-cotta furnishings, and neat touches, like drapery over your headboard and gilt detailing that gives things a truly aristocratic feel.
Italy is home to some of the most delicious food in the world, and the Chianti region is no exception. Linger over an olive oil-drizzled lunch of cold cuts and cheese, then enjoy a rustic dinner of pheasant or wild boar, sourced from the hotel’s own hunting grounds. Vegetarians will be pleased to know that fresh, seasonal produce is also grown at home, in the garden.
Castello di Tornano is in Gaiole, in Chianti, 45 minutes outside of Florence. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the region, from driving through hilltop villages to take in jaw-dropping panoramic views to trying your hand at wine-tasting, with a boozy tour of the region’s vineyards and wine cellars.
How to Get There
My partner and I cant thank the staff here enough for making our stay at the castle so perfect. A special mention has to be said for Alessandra who went above and beyond to make our stay so special, she really is an absolute credit to the castle and we cant thank her enough.
During our stay my partner decided to propose and enlisted the help of the castle to make it special. A private meal was set up within the castles wine cellar, where we were served a three course dinner along with wine from the castles own vineyard. Alessandra and one of the owners (I’m so sorry but I cannot remember her name) created a beautiful atmosphere for us, including candles, romantic music and rose petals. Along with the beautiful food prepared by Alessandras own lovely mother it really did create the most perfect experience and we are so grateful for everyone’s efforts. Thank you to everyone who made it special.
I cant recommend this castle enough, it really is set in such a beautiful area with the most spectacular views and the food is to die for!
Our stay at Catello di Tornano was more than we hoped for. The property is located in the hills of Chianti in Tuscany. The room we stayed in had two huge windows that opened to the beautiful countryside of vineyards. The room was large and the beds comfortable. The quaint, on-site restaurant provided a wonderful breakfast and well-prepared dinners from a daily menu. Everything was fresh and cooked to order. (the fresh homemade pasta was especially delicious!). All of the staff were friendly and we would like to thank Erika especially for her suggestions about visiting some of the neighboring small towns and the street market in Poggibonsi! We had a wonderful stay and will not hesitate to return for another visit.
We were extremely intrigued at how personable the staff was with our small family! We stayed in their 2bedroom villa for 5 days with our 2 young girls. For the setting, we were very pleased at the privacy for our 4 person family. Obviously we did not stay in the castle portion due to the children and that was ok so that we would be bothersome to the more obvious romantic portion of the ambiance of the setting. However; as husband and wife, we were able to enjoy the setting very much so and were able to enjoy the setting of the “Castello” for our 2 little Princesses 🥰
The villa was quite comfortable and the daily meal specials were incredible to our palate’s! Especially to the chef for creating a very special order from my husband one evening!
We very much to thank “Castello di Tornano” for their graciousness during our stay! Very much recommend to all!
We have been in Sicily/Italy for almost 2-weeks...drove all over Sicily & then can me to the mainland to see sights we may have not seen in our past trips. We decided we could not be in Tuscany and not stay again at the Castello (our first time was 3-years ago during a private wine tour/lunch & then in 2018 we stayed 3-nights). Luckily, they were able to accommodate us this trip. The Concierge/Reception was as warm as in the past & our favorite, Loredana, was there...this is like being with family and coming ‘home’! Erika now works in the Office & was terrific, as well.
Our room was on the ground floor - we are having a bit more ‘mobility’ issues this trip and this gorgeous room suited our needs beautifully!
Of course, were so excited to see Anna, their amazingly talented & creative Chef, too! There are new faces in the restaurant, but everyone was wonderful! Having such an outstanding restaurant as part of the Castello, we have never eaten dinner anywhere else. A very fresh & tasty breakfast is included each morning. Everything is ‘home grown’ - the boar, pork, poultry, beef, all vegetables & herbs, olive oil - so it is fresh!
The Castello wines are tops! Truly, this is a boutique winery & their wines are only available there. You must try as many as you can - all wonderful. We do ship home -
This small hotel is unlike any place we have ever stayed and is perfectly located, so day trips to Siena, Florence & others towns are an easy drive. We will not stay anywhere else and look forward to next time!
A perfect romantic get away with my favourite person, in a setting that you only see in postcards.
We could not have asked for more from this enchanted castle and all the people who make it so special. The staff did everything possible to make our stay wonderful.
The food alone is reason enough to return to this paradise, accompanied with the hotels own delicious wine.
Highly recommend the cooking class. Learn to make pasta and Tiramisu in true Italian style with the chef Anna.
Thank you to all at Castello di Tornano x
