Castello di Tornano is a great beauty in the tranquil countryside of Italy’s Chianti region. From the minute you cross the threshold of this imposing 11th-century castle and winery, you’ll find that things feel reassuringly noble. You could say the property has attained a modern-day nobility, too – in the form, that is, of a glowing TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
If you’ve ever dreamed of spending a luxurious night in a castle, you won’t be disappointed. Castello is a master class in soothing interiors and staggeringly beautiful scenery, with all the magnificent luxury you’d expect from a real-life court. Spend your days strolling over the undulating hills and the working olive groves and vineyards, or simplykick back and bathe in the balmy sunshine, take a dip in the hotel’s moat-turned-pool, and feel pretty noble yourself.
Your room is rich and warmly decorated, with deep wood, burnt amber and terra-cotta furnishings, and neat touches, like drapery over your headboard and gilt detailing that gives things a truly aristocratic feel.
Italy is home to some of the most delicious food in the world, and the Chianti region is no exception. Linger over an olive oil-drizzled lunch of cold cuts and cheese, then enjoy a rustic dinner of pheasant or wild boar, sourced from the hotel’s own hunting grounds. Vegetarians will be pleased to know that fresh, seasonal produce is also grown at home, in the garden.
Castello di Tornano is in Gaiole, in Chianti, 45 minutes outside of Florence. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the region, from driving through hilltop villages to take in jaw-dropping panoramic views to trying your hand at wine-tasting, with a boozy tour of the region’s vineyards and wine cellars.
How to Get There
This hotel is beautiful! It was extremely good value for money as I feel the hotel delivered above and beyond our expectations. Firstly, it's nicely tucked away, so when coming off the main road, drive slow so you dont miss the turning. You are greeted by the castle after driving up a windy road heading to the top. It's spectacular! Plenty of parking and then a little walk to reception. The castle has a few rooms which are all very rustic yet chic, we were given the choice between a couple. Beautifully kept grounds and very clean all round. We had a wine tasting which was great with a meat and bread board. The pool is lovely. The castle being situated so high up from the main road, its beautifully quiet. Beautiful views all around. It;s quiet and rural in the area anyway. Beware mosquitos though! BRING BUG SPRAY! The food at dinner was awesome, as at breakfast. Venture out into Radda if you fancy a drive. Its a lovely town with some restaraunts and bars if you fancy an afternoon away from relaxing at the castle. Fantastic stay! Thank you.
It is about 1.5 hours driving away from Florence. The location is on the top of the hill. The view from the roof top is splendid.
The reception is very helpful and booking the taxi for us. All the information provided are great and help my sister to bring the luggage to our room.
The dinner is great too. The food are in well presentation and good in taste.
We really enjoyed our stay. The people were extremely nice and the service was great. Our room in the tower was very cool. I would highly recommend the cooking class with Anna and the wine tasting. We would not hesitate to go back.
Such a unique property to be able to stay at. A very beautiful setting with 360 views from the tower. We had a spacious room on the main floor with a large bathroom. The shower was the biggest we’ve seen in Italy. Everything was very comfortable during our stay. It’s a good base for the area and set up with a lot of lounging areas inside and out for you to relax of visit with a group. Lots of parking on site too. Staff was attentive as well. Thank-you for a wonderful stay!
Breathtaking views. Large clean and comfortable rooms. Access to the site with large bags could be a little difficult with no elevator or a close proximity drop off location for luggage. The breakfast buffett was well done with cook to order items as well. We only stayed 2 nights and didn't get the opportunity to enjoy the cooking classes or any of the other amenities that were offered. We will carve out the time to do so on our next visit. The property is a little off the beaten path. We used it as a stopping point to take a day trip to Siena which was about a one hour drive. The staff was very accommodating. We spent more time in Pisa than we initially intended and didn't get to check in until after midnight which was no problem for them.
