Dramatic cliff top adults-only hideout in Santorini with a 150-year-old wine cave and infinity pool

The Lowdown

An intimate, adults-only escape set high on the cliffs above the island’s caldera, the Mystique Santorini affords jaw-on-the-floor views of the Aegean Sea. Minimalist whitewashed interiors feature organic lines, curved walls, rounded ottomans and driftwood details. The 22 suites start at a roomy 430 square feet and have private balconies with sunbeds and unrivaled panoramic sea vistas. Lounge by the infinity swimming pool with a good book during the day or nurse a cocktail after sunset, when the poolside tables transform into the romantic restaurant Charisma. Don’t want to dine alfresco? The hotel’s charming 150-year-old Secret Wine Cave makes for an equally amorous meal. And when you want to burn some calories, Mystique Santorini has mountain bikes available (you’ll need them to tackle the island’s notoriously steep hills).

In the Area

Oia is all about getting the most out of the seaside setting, so head to black sand Perivolos Beach, where the hotel has private facilities for guests, then admire the red volcanic rock of Amoudi Bay while watching daredevils dive off the cliffs and feasting on just-caught seafood at one of the tavernas, like the family-run Sunset. Another famous sunset perspective to be had is on the walls of the Kastro (Santorini’s old castle), or by taking a horseback expedition along the sand. Drop by the wonderful Atlantis Books to browse, chat with locals and maybe catch an open-air film screening at the store’s annual Caldera Arts & Literature festival.

Beyond Expectations

My boyfriend and I spent about a week in Santorini a few weeks ago and our most memorable experience was staying at Mystique. Not only is the property located on such an amazing part of the island where you experience unbeatable views every sunrise and sunset- the hospitality at Mystique was incredible. Everyone was very friendly and made sure we were totally satisfied and enjoyed our stay. They were very tentative and never left us without a few bottles of water for us in our room. Everyday, there was a new Greek dessert waiting in our room- great surprise! The hotel is located about a 5 minute walk to the main part of Oia so it's on a quieter side, but not far from all the action. Overall, I would definitely recommend this property and it really exceeded our expectations.

Views for days

This is a lovely Marriott property. Here are a few things I will point out. If you rent a car, as we did, please be aware there is NO signage from the road and the road is one-way so if you pass it you have about a 15-minute loop to get back to it. From the road you will see Alexander’s Boutique Hotel and Perivolas Market. It would be wise to put one of those in the GPS as you will be more likely to see it as a first-time arrival. This is the only thing I believe the concierge should do a better job of explaining to guests prior to their arrival. It should be included in the welcome email. There are tons of stairs, as others have mentioned in their review, but EVERYTHING in Santorini is tons of stairs, that’s part of visiting these villages. THe staff is happy to carry your bags and meet you at the road to help you find the property.

We are titanium medallion members and were upgraded to a hot tub suite. That was lovely and we took advantage of the hot tub (perfect temperature BTW). There were ample choices for breakfast (included as our titanium pick). We had dinner at the hotel one evening and it was lovely. The staff is always eager to help and the general manager, Evangelos Dimos, greeted us personally upon arrival and was always at the property to answer any questions. The views were stunning, and the location is Oia is great. I highly recommend this property!

Awesome except for the steps

I would have given this hotel a 5 star but the steps from the street down to the lobby and below are horrible. I understand everything is built on a caldera but this was unbelievable. We were dreading our stay here after our initial check-in but it ended up being great due to the fact that we never had to walk that way again because of where our suite was located. We were able to use a back way that took us out to the street and there was also another pool right by us as well as a restaurant for dinner and another one for breakfasts and snacks. If it wasn't for that, I would never have made it. This would never fly in the US. There are no handrails to hold on to and the walls are very short....you could easily lose your balance in some spots and go right over. Other than that, the staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating, and the restaurants and food were great. All the rooms are like a cave and very stark and white - walls, floors, coverlet, etc. Also you really don't have a great view from inside your room as there are no large windows. You have to go out on your balcony or, as in our case, open the door so we could see out when we sat on the sofa. If you did that, the view was beautiful. One other thing I might add is that it is a Marriott Property and we are reward members yet they would not give us our rewards because they said we booked through a travel company and not directly through Marriott. Our agent has NEVER and I mean NEVER heard of this before and she is going to take it up with Marriott. They would give it to us for food but not our room.
