How to Get There
This is our second attempt at all inclusive but it’s a no- brainer when you have a 12 year old only child. The hotel is immaculate - daily maid service & nice touches such as the mini-bar in the room being restocked every other day. I emailed the day we were going as I realised we wouldn’t be checking in until the early hours to which I had a reply almost immediately reassuring me the reception & main restaurant was open 24 hours. Sure enough, on arrival we had a swift & welcoming check-in & ushered in to the restaurant for a choice of hot food & desserts.
I have to admit I still struggle with the cattle market tendencies of the main restaurant despite the polite & speedy staff - the Greek & Chinese restaurant provided welcome relief & we soon avoided breakfast & lunch altogether preferring to use the delicious waffle/crepe bar & pizza oven by the pool and beach. The beach & pool areas are immaculate but I so wish the staff would uphold the signs that they would remove towels placed to reserve beds!
The drinks at the bar were not just local spirits but Ballantines whisky & Gordons gin. Our son enjoyed the bar entertainment of dancing & magic shows. The staff were very sweet towards him as he’s at that awkward age of not reaching out to make friends. He enjoyed a jet ski excursion with my husband; quite expensive but well organised & clear safety rules given.
We ridiculously spoilt ourselves with several trips to the Spa for a massage - all 3 of us. I have fibromyalgia & my husband has back & shoulder problems. It’s no exaggeration to say the treatments have left us feeling pampered & relatively pain-free. Carli (I think that was her name) & Maria looked after us exceptionally well & despite my British reserve I felt able to relax & trust Carli so really benefitted from the treatments. So much so, that I will be investing in ongoing massage at home.
In conclusion then, a well organised clean & generally welcoming hotel with a good team of staff. For a couple used to private villas & quiet resorts Mitsis seem to be the way to taste well priced & good quality all inclusive holidays.
My partner and I stayed at the Mitsis Rodos Villages in June this year so had high expectations for this hotel. As our 1st experience was so good we thought it would be great to take our 2 boys (12 and 5) to somewhere we thought would be good quality but family friendly.
We booked a room for 4 listing the boys ages - we were shocked at the room we were given which was tiny and dark, although not listed as a 'family room' we had booked a room for 4 so expected an appropriate room. The one we were given was a double room with a sofa bed -which they had then squeezed an extra bed into, this meant that the wardrobes were inaccessible without sitting on the extra bed and there was little if any space to put our bags. The room had 1 small window and as it was on the ground floor underneath other rooms with balconies and had trees / shrubs outside received little if any light. We didn't even unpack, returned to reception to request a room change and were told there 'may' be something better the next day. Wasted the 1st day being upset and trying to console the boys that we would get something better, trying to manage from suitcases, not unpacking in the hope we would move. After a couple of emails and speaking to a supervisor the next day we were allocated a much nicer 1st floor room with double sliding doors and a nice view. We were just made to feel we were being really awkward in expecting something better, it was pointed out to me that I had 'sent many emails' - when in fact I had sent 2,the 2nd only because I had forgotten something in the 1st.
There was no plug for the bath and despite speaking to both the cleaner and reception we never got one, so had to make do (using a shower cap to make a plug) when bathing the little one.
The fridge / mini bar in the room was well stocked and was topped up every 2 days, sadly the wine in the room was rose (not to either of our taste) but we didn't ask for anything different so it could possibly have been changed.
The safe was very small - you wouldn't get a laptop in there (my Microsoft Surface wouldn't even fit) and it wasn't very securely attached to the wardrobe.
Rooms have proper keys (not cards) so you only get 1 per family which is quite annoying when people want to do different things.
The outside areas were generally very nice and as per the images, aside from the meandering 'pool' that appears in some pictures, this is in fact a very tired, rather unclean, chipped round the edges water feature.
Although the pools looked lovely they were really quite cold - the sea was much warmer and it was difficult to get sun beds. We mainly used the smaller pool which has about 45 sunbeds and one morning 23 of these were 'reserved' despite clear notices that this wasn't allowed, when we asked staff to do something about it we were told 'what can we do about it' with a shrug of the shoulders. Swimming time was also very limited the pool was only open from 10 - 6 so if you were up early you couldn't get in before the families for a proper swim. The parasols couldn't be moved or put down so in many places it was very shady
We tried the 'new super adults only Champagne and sushi bar' with it's extensive wine list, we were offered 2 options for red wine; sweet or dry....really wasn't worth the effort apart from being quieter than the main bars.
The main food experience was also quite disappointing, the restaurant was chaotic at breakfast and evening mealtimes, the layout means that everyone is trying to use the same very narrow routes to get into the restaurant, get to the food and get back to their tables, so waiters with loaded trays, whole families trying to get in, people carrying hot food, children dashing about were all using the same narrow aisles. Most mornings and evenings you had to queue for food - and if you wanted food from more than one station e.g.meat and then vegetables you had to queue multiple times whilst your food cooled in front of your eyes. There appeared to be quite a good choice but over several days (even with the themed evenings) it became quite repetitive.
Food in the outdoor service areas was general good and plentiful, pizza, waffles, crepes etc were all really nice.
Really not sure why, given it was all inclusive we constantly had to give our room number, just to get a drink or a slice of pizza - it felt as though our usage of the facilities was being monitored and was quite annoying. Towels also seemed to be rationed, again you had to give your room number and could only have 1 pool towel per person per day.
We did book for the Chinese restaurant one night and that was excellent, really tasty food, fresh and hot and with decent wine.
The main bar area was packed until about 9.30 and for the first few evenings we regularly waited 20 minutes to get a drink, thank goodness we found the lovely Kostas, who was super quick and efficient and also very friendly, the youngest one adored him!
The little one went to the children's disco which he really enjoyed but was very disappointed that the majority of the songs / dances were in German so he didn't understand them, it was also very annoying that the face painting was only available from 8.30pm in the evening - why paint a child's face just before they go to bed? We did allow it one evening and the lady was excellent.
The beach was lovely, really great sunbeds, easy access to food and drinks, particularly liked the fresh watermelon (although the boys preferred the ice cream!) Watersports weren't cheap 40 Euro for 15 mins on a jet ski,but it was great fun, the free pedalos weren't in operation as the sea was never quite right...
Generally very clean and staff regularly checking for rubbish, life guard on the beach and a flag system to show you when it was safe. The sea is quite shallow and very sandy under foot with just an occasional small rock.
Overall this hotel is very much geared for the German market, we were always spoken to in German first,if we hadn't had the boys with us we probably wouldn't have noticed so much but they found it quite confusing and it was very noticeable around the pool how few people were not German.
Unfortunately there is little regulation of smoking so people smoked around the pool and in the theatre bar - even during the children's time.
To be fair this isn't the worst hotel in the world, there were some really good points, but overall we felt very let down.
Great hotel, amazing food and activities, reception staff were not great but they do organise trips from the hotel to santorini etc, which saves searching online. The animation team were great fun especially Diana with the aqua gym and latino dancing. The greek night was amazing fun, everyone was up dancing. On the beach, the Kayaks are free to use and the beach is really sandy. There were loads of sunbeds and beanbag beds to use. Make sure when you book, to upgrade to a vip room to ensure you benefit from the a la carte taverna breakfast, it's priceless; much quieter than the main restaurant and the food comes served exquisitely. The pool is massive and one end is 3 meters deep. The spa was nice and you can barter for prices. Quality of spa not great but massages and treatments were amazing. Will definitely come back as only 15 mins from the airport.
