How to Get There
We really looked forward to our vacation at the Mitsis Laguna Resort. The hotel is conveniently located about 30 mins drive from Heraklion Airport. The check in was very friendly and warm. We were picked up by a golf cart and brought to the room. The public areas of the hotel are very well looked after and do look very inviting. Once arrived at the room (family room with partial pool access #633) things turned around a bit different.
The room itself was very clean and in a good condition. The bathroom not so much. The tub was covered in mold, the button for the toilet was corroded and very dirty, the toilet seat was broken (laying flat on the ceramic and a bit off), the mirror (behind the wash basin wasn’t cleaned for quite some time, the towels were partially ok and partially really worn out with holes in them, not something you’d expect from a 5 Star Resort but more a 2* or 3*. The queen bed was actually a twin bed with to single beds put together. A bit strange and when the kids jump on it, they tend to form a big gap, which is kind of dangerous. The weather was quite chilly and there was no duvet but only a single bed sheet and on top an acrylic blanket. Doesn’t give you the feeling of an posh bedding you’d expect. The safe wasn’t working and had to be repaired several times, which wasn’t an issue, as I think the resort is very safe. Our cleaning lady was very nice but totally overworked. We stayed (staying) for a week and each day something was missing. But she each time brought the things she missed out to replenish. She was very kind especially to our kids and I kind of felt sorry for her workload (she even started cleaning the pool at 7 in the morning). We had the feeling that the hotel was short on towels, as always when we asked for extra towels she said “later”. The Nespresso capsules were all quite dirty (not sure what they were covered with). Once we asked for some extra capsules in the evening and the maid brought used capsules. Not sure where she got them from. Probably better I don’t know. The turn down service isn’t really a turn down service. You just get the towels exchanged. The beds won’t get made and the trash bins won’t be emptied and the bathroom amenities won’t get replenished.
Another issue is the noise level from upstairs or next door. When children run upstairs, move furniture or suitcases it really gets really loud. In the afternoon our children got up many times asking what are the noises. Every time someone flushed the toilet upstairs we heard all the “things” and water rushing down through our room. Luckily it was only acoustically. The rooms are really not isolated well and the noise level is frustrating. Even loud speaking could be heard from all sides of the
The pools couldn’t be used as the water was too cold. Quite disappointing, if you expected to spend your vacation with your children to be spent in pools. The only heated pool is in the spa area and can’t be used with small children. This wasn’t mentioned on the website of the hotel, which is quite a bummer.
The service in the main restaurant was mediocre as well. There were a few very friendly faces and a few who couldn’t care less or were simply totally overworked. Made orders didn’t arrive, used plates had to be brought to the service stations by ourselves. During Easter the hotel looked quite fully booked and maybe the staff or the management didn’t figure out how to handle the huge amount people after just opening the hotel for the summer season a few weeks ago. Quite long lines at the entrance of the main restaurant at all times and as well at the cooking stations. The food was varying from very good to very sad. But over all, not something I would do again. To get a table at the specialty restaurants was impossible. The website wasn’t really working well with safari and at 9 AM I never could get a table anymore. So I left it after a couple of days.
We tend to do really a good research before booking a hotel (especially with the kids) and normally we don’t get disappointed with the reviews of TripAdvisor. But this time we unfortunately missed it. Maybe we were just unlucky.
What an amazing hotel and what an amazing holiday we had! The rooms, the pools, the restaurants, the bars, the cocktails, the entertainment... absolutely everything was perfect and to top it all off the staff are fabulous. From the bar staff and waiters to the management and the animation team, everyone was so friendly and so welcoming! Thank you Angela and Christiano for keeping us fit and entertained day and night. Loved the dance classes and yoga by the pool every day. Angela is phenomenal! The barman at the pool bar created a cocktail especially for me, try it, we called it Caribbean whisper. The staff at the Cretan restaurant Izmir, Marinos and everyone else couldn’t do enough for us, we felt like VIPs. Chrissa at the Italian restaurant was so welcoming and friendly, we can’t thank you all enough. Special thanks to Panagiotis for looking after us, we are so grateful. The weather wasn’t fantastic but the staff and the luxurious surroundings made up for it and more! We came as guests and we are leaving as friends! Thanks so much! I hope to see you soon!
We are new to all inclusive and this exceeded all expectations. The hotel is stylish and well-designed but with a relaxed feel. All of the staff were lovely, professional and warm. Vasilis, the Front Office Manager was particularly kind, nothing was too much trouble. The food was fantastic, well-presented and imaginative and the atmosphere was great, particularly in the outside seating areas. Our room was beautiful, lovely touches everywhere and a relaxing but luxurious feel. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, thanks so much.
So what a start to 2019, wife and I have separated. Bit this holiday was booked last year. So I went along to please the kids. There were a few ups and downs, but the holiday resort was amazing. We had a room out to the shared pool, very nice. Food on offer was amazing. All in all a nice relaxing place. The entertainment was something you needed to chase up. Also the unique restaurants need to be booked online.
We had an absolutely fantastic time at the Mitsis Laguna. From the moment we stepped in we were both blown away by how amazing the hotel looked. The staff there were absolutely faultless and made our stay that extra bit special by sending my wife a surprise bottle of champagne and some treats for her birthday. The food was great. There was so much choose from everyday in the main restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the specials for the day always tasted lovely. The themed restaurants were also lovely too. The creperie has to have a special mention as they made some of the best crepes we have both tasted. Although we don’t have kids ourselves, it definitely seems like there is plenty to keep them busy. The games room certainly kept us busy some evenings. Our only gripe would be the spa - the spa facilities are lacking. There is no sauna or steam room and our treatments lacked the wow factor you would expect from a 5* spa. We would even go as far to say they are below average. All in all a fantastic time away and if you are going all inclusive there are no hidden secrets! We would definitely return and recommend to all for a great trip away in Crete!
