What To Know
Not in Essaouira itself but in the new tourist area of Mogador, a 10- to 15-minute drive farther down the coast. Although the hotel offers a free shuttle, it can be a little ad hoc at times
A 10-minute walk or five-minute bike ride from the beach. Bike rentals are free
The food can be a little uninspiring, but there are countless authentic Moroccan restaurants in Essaouira

A stylish modern take on traditional Moroccan design a stone’s throw from hippie beach haven Essaouira
Acclaimed interior designer Didier Gomez, who has worked with the likes of Yves Saint-Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior, created the provocative design of this Morocco getaway. He drew his inspiration from the hotel’s environment and location. Think rich Atlantic-blue tiles set against soft, spice-infused furnishings and traditional Moroccan lattice wood paneling. With a location like this, views are key, and the generous windows flood the hotel with light, blurring the border between outside and in.
Bed and Bath
The rooms, suites and villas all feature Gomez’s contemporary take on traditional Moroccan design, mixing primary colors with traditional patterns. Each room also features Sofitel’s famously indulgent MyBed, as well as a Nespresso machine, TV and WiFi. Those traveling with children should consider a villa, if the budget allows. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room, a small garden and a private pool, villas cover every base — they even come with a private butler! Serious golf fans adore the designer Lacoste villas, located near the first hole and clubhouse.
You’ve got a range of on-site bars and four restaurants to keep you boozed and fed. L’Antique pays homage to the ocean, serving fresh fish against the relaxed backdrop of the pool. For Moroccan fare, check out the buffet restaurant, Café Kasbah. For a romantic dinner, L’Atelier aux Arômes pairs creative plates with well-curated wines and for laid-back lunches the Le Club House overlooks the golf course. Be sure to grab a sunset cocktail at Le Pool Bar. The nearly 14,000-square-foot spa includes eight treatment rooms, a tiled pool and a chill-out lounge. The spa offers exclusive Sofitel treatments suited to your mood; it also has Clarins and Cinq Mondes onboard as product partners. There are also three swimming pools to choose from; the biological outdoor pool, the heated outdoor pool and the heated indoor pool.
In the Area
Famous for being Jimi Hendrix’s hippie home away from home, Essaouira is one of the most culturally diverse and relaxed cities in Morocco. From camel riding on the beach to razzing up the sweeping dunes on a quad bike, it’s perfect for adrenaline junkies. If you’re seeking laid-back fun, take a stroll through the city’s enchanting cobbled streets or spend a night sipping tea while grooving to some live music. Check out the Moroccan textiles and hand-worked leather at Boutique Mehdi, the funky homewares at Kif Kif and the bold paintings at Frédéric Damgaard’s gallery. Afterward, linger over dinner at the retro-1970s Elizir or the nouveau Moroccan Villa Maroc.
