Ok cost for the location

Visited London to go to Winter Wonderland and the hotel was next to Hyde Park at a reasonable price for London which is why I chose it, it was ok but the bathroom was a bit tatty and the room needed decorating as looking a bit tired.

Nice location!

Being right across from Hyde park, 2 blocks from the metro, and a bus stop right out front gives this hotel a 2 thumbs up for location. The building itself is getting a bit dated, and there were definite issues with the pipes and faucets on our last night, but overall we enjoyed our stay. The beds are tiny - we think of a double as 2 queen beds, not 1 double bed, but there was more space than the hotel we had just left in Paris! We found the staff very helpful. We had internet issues the first night that were fixed as soon as we requested help, and they corrected a towel issue very promptly. Breakfast was more then your typical continental breakfast. We would stay again.

Shabby but not chic

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in October. Not a pleasant experience. The hot water system was having severe problems which I believe are dangerous. It wasn’t a case of no hot water, more a case of no cold water! The shower was scalding hot and at times unusable. Something is seriously wrong with this water system. At times the loo flushed with very hot water, never heard of that happening before.

The food in the hotel is quite mediocre and I would not recommend eating here in the evening.

All of the public rooms and indeed our bedroom were very shabby. On the plus side the bedroom was larger than the normal London hotel room, but so tired.

The staff were very pleasant in the circumstances and I did feel sorry for the (temporary?) manager. He did give us a part refund because of the problems we experienced, but frankly we would have preferred paying full price and having a better standard of hotel.

Staff training needs to be looked into. When I asked the receptionist how to get to the Victoria & Albert Museum she replied “take the tube to Victoria and then it’s a short walk”. Fortunately I didn’t take her advice.

Generally Thistle hotels are excellent, I’ve stayed in the Amba, and my favourite, the Royal Trafalgar on several occasions, every time the service and facilities have been first class. The Hyde Park lets the brand down.
