How to Get There
We stayed at this old hotel while in London for the night. We were in town for the Hamilton musical. It is located near Buckingham Palace and near the Nova restaurant area. The staff was extremely attentive and provided excellent service. The rooms are small, but have been renovated and very modern. The New York bar is a must for a drink. I highly recommend staying at this hotel if you are in the Victora area.
Booked as part of a birthday gift through Virgin and as fairly new to the gin explosion thought this would be a great way to understanding the plethora of gins available to choose from.
We were looked after by a great member of the team Razvan. A very knowledgable bar manager who I gave the title of “Gin Director” in homage to his fantastic knowledge and story telling skills. He took us on a fascinating journey which covered the early discovery of Gin, what entitles you to name a gin “London dry” and how, by experimenting, you can make your own personalised gin very easily and have some fun along the way!
We opted for the gin and tasting experience which I would recommend as the food works in tandem with the gin (something else I learned) I won’t say anymore more as it would spoil the day if you decide to book.
I will add the hotel itself is lovely, passed here a number of times without looking in. A coupe of lovely bars and restaurants which have just been refurbished in the last year, without losing the traditional and royal theme which is a big part of the hotels heritage.
A big thumbs up from us.
I chose this hotel for my final night in the UK following a weeklong tour of Wales as I was departing early the next morning. It was pricier than most in the area but I usually stay at a hotel in Bloomsbury that is also part of the Red Carnation Hotels Group and absolutely love it there so figured this had to be just as good.
The greeting at the entrance and front desk was very nice and professional and my room was located on the 4th floor. I stayed in a classic double. t was a nice, small room well appointed with everything I would need for a comfortable stay. The toiletries were by Fragonard, which are very nice and there were robes, slippers and a coffee/tea tray. The air con worked very well and was easy to control. I did not have room service or breakfast so I cannot comment on that. The doorman was very helpful to me in the morning with hailing a cab after Uber failed to pick me up.
My only complaint was the level cleanliness in the room. The housekeeping staff left a large pillow on the end of the bed that was clearly requested by the previous guest. The pillow case had been removed so it was faded and old looking. It was not pleasant to see upon entering the otherwise lovely room. One of the end tables by the bed was not properly wiped down either. I placed the old pillow on the floor by uncleaned end table and steered clear of that area. When the front desk called to check to see if my room was okay I did mention it to him. He offered to have someone come up to retrieve the pillow from the room but I declined as it was late and I needed to get up early. However, my confidence in the cleanliness of other areas of the room was slightly shaken after this and therefore I did not look to closely.
Despite the above, the room was very nice and I slept well. I think the forgotten pillow and uncleaned table were probably isolated incidents and maybe housecleaning just need to slow down a bit and double check their work before exiting the room after cleaning. I would stay here again if I ever need to be back in this area.
Felt like we stepped back in-time (in a good way) the minute we walked in and were greeted by the porter! All staff were super friendly, room was very classy and unique and very comfortable with great modern amenities like great air-con which was important when it was 30c+ outside! Only real negative was breakfast was so expensive we didn't get it and instead opted for a full english in cafe's nearby but other than that it was spot on!
Recently returned from another very enjoyable stay at the Rubens. Wish we could have stayed longer.
As regular guests they get to know your preferences and welcome you by name and a friendly smile as soon as you get to reception. All the staff including senior managers are friendly and very efficient. Any request is quickly dealt with.
Ideally situated for an early morning stroll to St James Park or to watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.
A room overlooking the Royal Mews means you get to see all the activity and you may even see the horses going out for their morning exercise in the parks.
Cannot wait for our next stay.
We have stayed at four of the Red Carnation hotels and they all live up to their policy of 100% satisfaction for their guests.
They certainly deserve the recent accolade of Number 2 in the
list of the Best Hotel Group in the World.
