Upscale airport digs with direct access to Heathrow’s Terminal 5

The Lowdown

Airport hotels tend to favor function over fashion, but this five-star Sofitel skillfully balances both. The common areas are decidedly contemporary (glass chandeliers, futuristic furnishings), while the 605 guestrooms are outfitted with tan leather sofas and sleek hardwood headboards, with pops of deep burgundy and olive-green. There’s no need to leave for good food: Savor 31 teas from around the world at Tea 5, get your white tablecloth fix at La Belle Epoque (the only fine dining restaurant in Heathrow dishes out gourmet French fare and holds three AA rosettes), or settle in for a fireside nightcap and small plates at Sphere, the lobby cocktail bar.

In the Area

Catching a flight out of chaotic Heathrow is mercifully convenient thanks to a covered walkway linking the property directly to Terminal 5. If you have time to venture away from your gate, take the Heathrow Express to central London; you’re less than half an hour away from Paddington Station, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Or take a cab to nearby Windsor Castle; the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world offers tours of its grounds, including fall and winter visits to the ornate Semi-State Rooms (provided the queen isn’t entertaining).

Airport hotel

Having stayed at the Gatwick Sofitel a number of times we hoped this would be as good and were not disappointed, parking very easy check in was slick.

Our family room was fine although I do think hotels generally need to improve on this as a sofa bed is not really quite good enough for 2 children.

The lounge was great with snacks and drinks on offer and the Sphere bar was ok. I felt the bar was all a bit too open.

Anyway we would definitely return

We had a fabulous 24 hours at Sofitel! The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a lovely meal at the hotel restaurant. Bogdan was a fantastic waiter, he was always smiling and was accommodating to my partners food allergies.
Wish I could go back and have some more curry!

We made a reservation on-line for the Sofitel for what I thought was the day we returned from our cruise 8/17/19. When I viewed the confirmation email I noticed I had selected a one night stay on 8/18 rather than 8/17. Human error (their calendar starts on a Monday rather than a Sunday). I contacted the hotel and they said that l needed to cancel the 1st reservation and make another. The reservation was non refundable. And Inhave been charged for both. To date (8/22/19), the hotel has done nothing to rectify the issue.
