How to Get There
This was quite a disappointment. We chose this Accor hotel because I am an A Club member and wanted to take my wife to London for her birthday. It is a fairly modern building and in a good location if you are going to the O2 as we were.
I booked direct and asked a question at that time.
Later I emailed directly after my wife had an operation on her foot which meant we had to drive there.
There was a delay of a day or two before I got a reply. They confirmed that there was parking and said we could have it for only £8 a day. They also said they would upgrade our room and it would be nearer the lift so my wife had less distance to walk.
We arrived and drove into the ground level car park and up a level. There was plenty of room but I was glad my car was not larger- the exit in particular is VERY narrow.
We went to check in. Oddly there is a lift from the ground floor and mezzanine to the Reception which is on the second floor. You then catch a completely separate lift to your room. Not particularly convenient with luggage or if you have mobility issues.
We were given Room 539. If it was an upgrade then the standard rooms can't be too impressive. It was not near the lifts. It was an OK room- as good as a Travelodge or Premier Inn. The view was nice. Good wardrobe and storage space. Mini fridge with free water. Desk and a smallish TV with limited channels. No details of the hotel and facilities to speak of.Comfy bed
The toilet was separate from the bathroom. And small. The bathroom was also small- a walk in shower and small sink. Not much room to put your toiletries.
Free wi fi and a USB socket by the headboard.
We didn't have breakfast there but had an unremarkable evening meal at the Upper Deck. I was glad I kept my jacket on as it was cold by the window. Service was casual and not really attentive.
The worst example of the poor quality attitude from the staff came when I went to pay for parking. Three staff were on Reception - one was dealing with a couple checking in. The other two were studiously looking at their computer screens ignoring me.
Another guest then arrived and went up to one of the Receptionists who duly served him, ignoring the fact I had been waiting.
When I did get served I was asked if I had stayed at the hotel. I had to show her the email offering parking at half price. It took quite a while for her to validate my parking ticket and to pay (no contactless here) and then she told me that the pass was valid for only 10 minutes!
Given my wife's mobility problem and getting our luggage to the car plus setting up the sat nav this was hardly up to standard.
On the plus side my wife did get a free birthday cake after we arrived.
Would I stay there again? Because of the poor quality of the staff: no. Urgent need for training in customer care here. Other hotels exist in the area.
Novotel London Excel was a hidden gem for us. We are used to staying in the heart o London, namely Novotel London City South (Southwark) and Novotel Blackfriars. Truthfully, arriving at Excel is not an easy task for the faint of heart if you are carrying your suitcases. It takes aproximately 1h30 to get there from Heathrow by tube and DLR (with changes at GreenPark and Tower Gateway) and if you are traveling during peak hours... well, I think you got the picture !However, once you arrive at the site you get the feeling the whatever the trouble, it was worth it ! The hotel is wonderfully located by the docks, a few steps from Excel and Emirates cable cars, so you have connections (not very cheap) to any place in LondonThe hotel itself is new, spacious, with all kinds of amenities and a structure you rarely finds in similar hotels in London. However, the staff is not up to the task yet. Seemed to need some training on how to receive guests, make notes of specific requests so as not to "forget", and we were surprised to hear from the bartender that we had to pay for our wine the moment we bought it... even before start drinking. Usually we enjoy our drinks, order something else, linger a bit at the lobby and then pay for whatever we have purchased. Anyway, they might have though we'd run away with the bottle... We requested a late check-out right on our check-in. The lady there checked it out and said ti would be ok. Then the "supervisor" (or just someone who's been working there longer) butted in and interrupted quite rudely saying they could not guarantee a late check-out... that is, till she noticed we were staying at the suite, and realized I was a Silver Member at Le club Accor. Now she changed the tone in her voice and added: "you know what ? We'lll do that for you !"The problem was that on the day we were to leave, our cards to enter the suite stopped working at 12h... someone had forgot to inform the system about the late check-out...All considered, we would definitely go back !
What a really lovely event we had at the UpperDeck bar in the Hotel. The drinks event that was held there in the roped off area was well organised and all the staff really looked after us. Especially Diana who kept me fully informed how the bar tab was progressing and met all our needs along the way. We would definitely return to the Hotel and Bar for another event. Thank you.
I entered the upper deck bar in the hotel, I stumbled across a hidden gem!!
Amazing choice of food and drink great environment very nice and chilled
Extremely clear great service and great staff
Istvah and Paul were excellent during my visit
Absolutely great place give it a go!!!
This hotel is located just a minute from Excel right on the Thames. The reception is on the first floor with bar and dining area overlooking the Thames.
The reception staff are very friendly, knowledgeable about the area. We were going to a show at the O2 and were receiving the cable car, station about 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
The room is spacious with and ironing board, tea/coffee making facilities, fantastic bathroom with power shower and bath tub and a separate toilet , the bed is comfortable so had a great night sleep.
Breakfast was great with a good choice of full English, cereals, juices etc, latte excellent.
On the whole a comfortable hotel, clean and value for money.
There is a garage and can park your car for £16 per day.
