Pleasant surprise upgrade
Reviewed 2 months ago

I booked a room in London City Suites but on arrival was pleasantly surprised to find we had been upgraded at no extra cost to one of the rooms in the main hotel building, Montcalm Brewery Hotel. The room was on 1st floor in the older part of the building, with its own private entry hall. The room was huge, well designed and comfortable. Elemis toiletries in the bathroom. Special mention to Vlad, on the concierge. He carried my bags up to the room for me, as I was alone on arrival. When I mentioned my husband was joining me later - as it was our 33rd anniversary - he very kindly ordered a bottle of wine for us and sent it to our room. A lady later knocked for a turn down service and there was a little box of chocolates provided. A brief but very enjoyable stay.

You get what you pay for, but it’s not 5 star.

Kind, assertive and welcoming staff upon arrival. Room was as expected, 1 or 2 things weren’t working, for example: the bedside reading lamp. I decided not to have a bath as it wasn’t very clean, for a 5 star hotel you’d expect that not to be the case. I’d best describe the hotel as basic. It has everything you need for a short stay.

This is the only hotel I have stayed in the charges you a £5 tray charge for room service +2.5% service charge. For the price you are paying for your stay you don’t expect this. I unknowingly spent £11.50 on a bowel on chips! When you view the room service menu you’ll find this information in the small/tiny print at the bottom.

Cleanliness- 3/5 stars
Customer service- 5/5 stars
Location- 5/5 A 4min walk to the Barbican Centre

Overall 3/5 stars, would stay again if I got a good deal but it’s worth no more than £100 a night.

Disappointing - be wary this is not up to 5 star standard!

After reading poor reviews of the Montcalm City Suites, which is based at the same location, we explicitly booked for the Montcalm Brewery Hotel. Friends were staying in the same hotel and so we hoped to be together. On arrival at reception, we were told our room wasn’t ready and that we had been ‘upgraded’ to a better room with a view.
Hoped this would be a pleasant surprise, as it was a significant occasion that brought us to London in the first place. However, when the staff member started leading us out the hotel and across the courtyard I knew we’d been placed in the City Suites, which I did not want or had paid for.
This part of the building was worn looking and opened into the side of a pub. After navigating a myriad of stairs and corridors, we were shown to our room, which was dark and basic. I dread to think what the other rooms were like if this was the ‘upgrade’. Our luggage was not ready in the room, nor were the little extras requested and paid for in advance by my partner as a treat to celebrate our weekend away.
Staff apologised and said it had been accidentally cleared away by the cleaning staff.

For a five star hotel, I would not expect such a miscommunication between staff. It put a real downer on the start of our stay. Staff did attempt to rectify it after we complained, so that on our return to the room in the evening there was a bottle of wine, but it felt too little, too late.

Additionally, I felt the staff were cold and inattentive in comparison to our friends who were staying in the main hotel. Did not feel particularly welcome or comfortable when in the main reception area.

All in all, this was not what I expected. The City Suites are definitely not what I would call five star and so would not expect to be ‘upgraded’ into them. The service from staff in the main hotel building was not on par with how I have been treated in other five star hotels. It was frustrating that there appeared to be no other way to access our room from the main hotel except by going out into the cold courtyard.

The hotel is situated in a fabulous location with many tourist attractions a short walk away and what I saw of the main hotel building is beautiful. However, I think it needs to make sure staff communication is clear and effective, so that those little touches that really make a person’s stay extra special are met. Was not happy to not be given a room in the main hotel as expected.

Interesting building

We enjoyed our stay. It is an old brewery with many stairs and hallways. Very interesting.
Our room was very very small. But overall good.

One big con the door we had to enter to go to our hallway was super smelly. It smelled like a slaughter house. We found out the kitchen was there and it was disgusting. Food and dirt was on the walls. Plates on the floor.

very nice
