Sumptuous 18th-century interiors paired with avante-garde décor, at an exclusive London members’ club

The Lowdown

If you’ve ever wanted to sample being part of a private members’ club, slip inside the exclusive Marylebone haunt Home House. Behind the unmarked door on Portman Square – a few steps from Mayfair and the shops of Oxford Street – lies sumptuous 18th-century interiors with a splash of contemporary avant-garde, like the sculptural pyrite bronze bar by starchitect Zaha Hadid.
At the top of the sweeping spiral staircase, your lovely guest room awaits – each individually styled with lashings of velvet, mahogany and antique curios. Make the most of the gym during your stay, if you’re not too busy feasting on Asian-inspired dishes in the jewel-like Octagon Rooms, celeb-spotting in the three bars or taking afternoon tea in the neo-classical Drawing Room.
Michelin-starred restaurants, contemporary art galleries and sleek cocktail spots abound in this part of London, though with a residence like this you may want to stay ensconced in the townhouse, and who would blame you? Needless to say, Home House neatly pocketed a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

A first class hotel - but different

Home House is technically a club, but they rent rooms to non-members. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed (homey) but unlike a typical English club very relaxed. More like the Reform club’s cool younger sister.

The restaurants and the drawing room (as well as the gorgeous court yard restaurant/ bar) are very decently priced and good quality.

We will definitely come back!

Met a friend for drinks and lunch .Lovely relaxed atmosphere - discreet staff and tasty snacks .

It is always a joy to climb the stairs up to the drawing room and sit in comfy chairs and relax . Lovely bar snacks and main meals too . Great cheese board and chunky chips . Got a bit lost after going to the loo and ended up in the house next door ! The staff kindly guided me back to the correct area .

A hidden gem

If you are a lucky member of this lovely private club, you will be able to take your family to their summer Sunday roast buffet in a pretry back garden under a chic marquee. It is definitely not cheap, but what a great place. Never been yet to their indoor restaurant but looking forward to it. Staff is perfectly courteous, atmosphere is elegant and chilled. The marquee is available for drinks during the week, perhaps lights snacks too I would assume. In a word, a perfect English Sunday, choice of meat or fish, salads of all kinds at the buffet, and your jug of Pimms (a word to the wise, ask it wihhout ice unless you like your Pimms very very light!, I am not removing a star, but hey, some things need to be said) Love this non judgmental, friends, families and even dog friendly place.

I've been here a few times now and if the private members club is your kind of thing then you'll like Home House.

My sister in law is a member and we went there for Sunday lunch.

The beef was great as were the veg. The Yorkshire pudding was spectacular and tasted great with the gravy.

No complaints here.

Slow to no service

My partner and I stayed at Home House for a weekend city break in the James Wyatt suite. The suite was magnificent with its own private lift! The hotel is also extremely beautiful.

We started our stay with a few afternoon/evening drinks in the garden area, where we found the service was extremely slow and were sitting with empty glasses for over 20 minutes each time. We spoke with the duty manager who apologised and offered 1 free complimentary cocktail between us.

Following this incident at 6am on Sunday we phoned room service requesting some orange juice, after 20 minutes of trying to get through somebody answered and said that they couldn’t do anything! We where confused and extremely frustrated at this point so phoned reception which again took 15-20 mins to get through for then whoever was on duty at this time (6am Sunday 17th June) to BLOCK OUR CALLS!!! So we couldn’t get through to anywhere and received NO drinks. I would expect this kind of service from a budget hotel definitely not a 5* luxury. Will not return.
