If you’ve ever wanted to sample being part of a private members’ club, slip inside the exclusive Marylebone haunt Home House. Behind the unmarked door on Portman Square – a few steps from Mayfair and the shops of Oxford Street – lies sumptuous 18th-century interiors with a splash of contemporary avant-garde, like the sculptural pyrite bronze bar by starchitect Zaha Hadid.
At the top of the sweeping spiral staircase, your lovely guest room awaits – each individually styled with lashings of velvet, mahogany and antique curios. Make the most of the gym during your stay, if you’re not too busy feasting on Asian-inspired dishes in the jewel-like Octagon Rooms, celeb-spotting in the three bars or taking afternoon tea in the neo-classical Drawing Room.
Michelin-starred restaurants, contemporary art galleries and sleek cocktail spots abound in this part of London, though with a residence like this you may want to stay ensconced in the townhouse, and who would blame you? Needless to say, Home House neatly pocketed a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
How to Get There
Stayed here for one night, two rooms, with Secret Escapes so a mid week bargain. Home House is absolutely delightful, charming, thrilling, gorgeous and unique. There is a feast for the eyes throughout but it was also comfortable, quiet, discreet, supremely elegant and inviting. The bedrooms were large, the water was hot, we were happy, it was charming. Our breakfast was continental, absolutely fine and just right.
Now. The jewel in the crown? The staff. They were accommodating, welcoming, friendly and we were treated, I would imagine, the same as any guest and not as a Secret Escapes offer client. They all seemed to be at ease, happy and part of a Home House family.
I work for a major Charitable Trust and am used to liaising and overseeing social events on a large scale, I have dealt with many hotels and establishments. Home House stands above all I have encountered, not just for its charm and surroundings, but for its staff and their service, so often the life blood of an establishment. Home House has succeeded by marrying the establishment and their staff perfectly. I hope to return and wish them all every success.
Sadly, all that glitters is not gold. Reception staff could do with some training in communication and customer service skills. Being ignored whilst 2 staff members attended to who I was told was a ‘VIP’, who arrived after us, was not the best welcome! Bedroom air con poorly functional and noisy- bedroom so hot we couldn’t sleep. Open plan arrangement of bathroom not ideal, esp having to be an acrobat to climb into the bath, with shower over. Room service breakfast a joke for this ‘calibre’ of hotel.... dry (uncovered) toast set on a side plate, arrived with no butter and yoghurt option presented poorly. On the plus side, the most comfortable bed ever. Perhaps next time I’ll let them know that at other, more prestigious hotels, I too have been a VIP!
Firstly I wasn't here for an overnight stay but will be very soon. Luckily my wife is a member here- and has visited this place a few times, my first impressions were just an astoundingly beautiful place with very friendly and efficient staff. A hidden exclusive gem!
