Our stay at the Blake Hyde Park was average. I think to call it a 4**** hotel is stretching it. We spent 4 nights at the hotel. My observations:

1) At check in, we were informed of an upgrade to an executive room, which was was appreciated by us. But it was on the ground floor, and was not acceptable since we had earlier written to the management to request a room on a higher floor.
2) When asked to change the room, the lady at the reception, Ms. Ana was short and did not appreciate our request, although she did change our room to a 2nd floor regular room with a view to a garbage bin.
3) The room was small and the bathroom was tiny. Having said that, the bed was very comfortable and the room was extremely clean.
4) One would appreciate more glasses in the room, since only 2 small plastic glasses were provided, for a 4 **** standard hotel.
5) The housekeeping was very efficient.
6) The continental breakfast was provided with the room, just cold pastries and cheese and fruit. The hot meal option was available for an extra 7 pounds. The hostess at the entrance was very pleasant and cheerful. The rest of the serving staff were cold and aloof.

To sum it all, I think that there seems to be dearth of happiness and cheer in the whole set up. The management needs to be properly trained for a 4 *** experience. We have stayed at many other hotels, where basic etiquettes of proper customer service were a hallmark. Probably will not visit again.

This is one of my fav places to stay in London not only for the location but the comfort of the rooms. This was our first visit since the referbs have been completed and it looks fantastic, lift working again and a fully functioning bar area. Checking in as always has its quirks but I now come to expect it so I dont stress out when they can't find my booking . The big shock for me was breakfast, we always have breakfast when we stay here as the quality is very good and the wait staff are usually excellent. On this occasion we were greeted in the usual friendly manner, unfortunately one of the other servers looked to be having a very bad day, swearing at her fellow colleague and slamming crockery around. This continued throughout our breakfast. Despite what looked like the manager/owner sitting down for breakfast the attitude continued.
Im hoping this doesn't become the normal standard.

Death by Scent

This hotel is in a great location. It is, or so it has been stated, been refurbished. Regrettably there are a few issues.

Check in was delayed for three hours. This is unacceptable and to be very frank the reception staff were at first wholly reticent to offer any words of comfort. Given the large number of people who arrived between 12 and 1pm it would appear that the general consensus was that turning up at a regular check in time was not an option. The attitude of the receptionist was not only dismissive but wholly inappropriate. My colleague was outraged at her lack of attention and her lack of willingness to resolve the issue.

A secondary aspect was the overwhelming smell of PotPourri. I have never been to anywhere in the world, this includes, Thai temples, and great Cathedrals where the overwhelming smell of perfumed air was such that it rendered me blind. it was impossible to keep a straight face, mainly due to the distressed nature of my expression, as the smell increased when I eventually entered my room. I had no choice but to sleep with windows open which whilst bracing, is perhaps not an ideal situation when it is below zero outside.

Simple things can be resolved here, attitude, assistance and getting rid of the potpourri plug ins, god save me from such a fragrant death.

Nice but needs proper management

We stayed here for one night with partner for weekend in London. The hotel itself is pleasant and the room was clean. For £150 a night would have been nice to have a better view than a brick wall. Once back at hotel bar we ordered a bottle of wine, this was painful! It took two staff to try and search for a bottle opener...must have been around 30 mins to watch this, I was then given a bottle stopper to open it myself!!! I told them this won’t open the bottle. They eventually found the bottle opener and then I was given it to open the bottle myself as they didn’t know how to open it!! They did say that the bar man had called in sick, but this was comical for a 4 star hotel. When complained to the manager he offered me a 20% discount, which I said wasn’t acceptable for that level of rubbish service in what’s meant to be a 4 star hotel. Disappointed with the outcome and that a manager couldn’t make a decision better than that!

Please sort the bedroom doors

We stayed for 3 nights. Our room was spacious and clean and for us in a good location near Kensington park. What spoilt our trip was the noise from bedroom doors slamming shut. Unless you closed them yourself they swung back with force. This meant we were woken at various times 11pm 1am 3 am etc depending on what times guests returned to their rooms. Also a strange arrangement at breakfast. We booked to include continental breakfast as thought that was the only option available only to find that once in the breakfast room you can have cooked breakfast for an extra £5.50 per person. Everyone seemed to be the same so the cooked breakfast remained untouched on the buffet for over an hour each day apart from the member of staff whose job it was to continually turn the bacon and stir the eggs. My final gripe was that on checking out the receptionist who was dealing with me twice answered the telephone - always deal with the customer you are serving first. Otherwise if the above are sorted then I would recommend a visit.
