Excellent stay

I stayed at the Aloft hotel for two nights this weekend on our annual London Christmas trip . We usually stay at the Premier Inn at Stratford, but wanted a change this year and actually had a reservation for the Moxy Stratford but changed to the Excel last minute, as we found it had a pool and gym which attracted us.

Check in was simple, the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We were extremely impressed with our room. The layout was spacious, TV impressive and had a great view of the Thames. We were looking forward to starting our stay with a swim, however, on approaching the pool area we found it was closed for maintainance. Not only were we disappointed, we were slightly annoyed that there was no notice of this at reception, we should have been made aware of this upon arrival. However, these things happen and it was due to open the following day - fine.

During our stay we didn’t use the restaurant, however were impressed with the bar area. Great area with a pool table, TV, comfy seating and music. The drink selection was great, and the service was impeccable. It would be nice if staff wore name badges so I could mention the staff who served us could be given recognition in this review!

The second day of our stay we the pool was reopened - we were impressed! On the small side but lovely atmosphere, there is also a sauna and spa too, both great facilities. The gym is also a pretty good standard for a hotel gym!

Overal, we were very happy with our stay. If you’re willing to travel a little further into central London, it’s most definitely worth saving the extra couple of hundred pounds. As mentioned there were a couple of points for improvement, however for the price we paid I see no reason to recommend it any less. I plan to return next month with my partner, and this will now be my mum and I’s regular hotel when she visits me in London in future!

quite happy with it overall, but could use a little improvement

Stayed for 4 nights in early December 2018.

I wasn't expecting much, given the location (far from everything but LCY and Excel).
But, Aloft was a pleasant surprise. It's modern, relatively new and quite efficient.
My room was on the 6th floor with a nice view. Room size was more than adequate and all things (furniture, plugs, gadgets) functioned well.

The gym is good, but not great. The pool is tiny but I don't care as I don't swim for exercise. Sauna and steam-room are very nice. However, as others have pointed
out, there are often kids taking swimming lessons in the evening. (I saw a bunch of them on my first day). On the 2nd day, the pool plus steam/sauna were all closed for
the rest of my stay. Why? The closure sign didn't say but the front-desk person confirmed my suspicion that one of the kids had "a small accident" in the pool the day before. (Translation: crapped in the water.) Why does it take 3+ days to do simple hazmat cleaning?

The cafe on the 2nd floor served quite decent breakfast. Not great, but ample and
tasty. (As SPG platinum, I had free breakfast).

Check-out was quick and efficient.

Finally, room service: sloppy and uneven as far as refilling towels and
bathroom amenities and coffee/tea service.

Great hotel for Excel area

i stayed here for all of November
The hotel was overall excellent, staff were great & attentive, they assisted greatly with all of my many deliveries from Amazon & others, never losing any of y packages & very often would put them directly into my room.
Food was good, only ate in the restaurant 1 night but had the buffet breakfast most days & found that to have very good selection & always well stocked.
The bar staff were excellent and made us feel very welcomed whenever we stopped by.
room was clean & comfortable, the walk in shower was great.
All in all absolutely no complaints & I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area. It may be a little out of the way for a tourist trip into central London but would be fine for a visit to the East end or the city as this is easily accessible via DLR or a short taxi or Uber drive away. as is London City airport.
Only one strange thing was the fact that they only had Irish Newspapers in reception.
There is 1 washing machine & 1 dryer next to the pool area with a vending machine for detergents etc.
Decent Gym & pool.

Rude, insulting and descriminatory management

Hotel Manager Joel-Win is a terrible and horrid manager. With no respect nor regard for customer service

Stayed at the Hotel for a weekend, where their pool services were unavailable due to maintenance. Hotel staff then did the right thing by offering me and my partner access to the facility at a time after our check out in order to compensate us.

However Hotel manager then proceeded to call me a liar and treated us like criminals, insisting we were not offered this service. When he found this was true, rather than apologies he then continued to insult us as though we were dirt on his shoes. Manager was unmoved by complaints, scoffing and saying "I'm sorry you feel bad" rather than admitting he had handled the situation poorly. I could not possibly imagine a worse manager even if paid to do so.
