What We Love

  • In a city of historic hotels, this is a rare design property where style is a priority
  • Hotel loungers on Miramare Bay mean you can sunbathe by day and sightsee come dusk
  • Seafood restaurant Vapor is one of the best in Croatia
  • Rooms are light, bright and spacious and make the most of that Adriatic panorama
  • The spa is a lovely extra if you’re here for a few nights; treatments are affordable

What To Know

  • There's a two night minimum stay for the Classic Sea View and Romantic Sea View rooms
  • Staff reckon it's half a mile from the city, but that's slightly optimistic; it’s farther to main sights (and uphill on the way back)
  • If you want cultural authenticity, Bellevue feels Euro-chic rather than particularly Croatian
  • Shiny surfaces, glass walls and sharp corners make this sleek, but child-unfriendly
  • True design buffs may be disappointed at the decor — it's dated compared with cutting-edge Paris/NYC/Bangkok standards
  • It can feel a little sterile if not at full capacity

  •  Free WiFi

Overview

The Review

Unusually for Dubrovnik, when I stayed at the Hotel Bellevue, the rain lashed down in sheets; but once I’d checked in, I realized the hotel actually came into its own on such blustery days. The concept behind the Bellevue’s floor-to-ceiling windows and wood-decked balconies is to recreate the feel of a classic ocean liner. As it’s perched right on the cliff edge (I got sea mist in my face on my visit), staying there can feel like being on a boat.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2400/prop-78731-1329836914-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”Eating outside at Vapor, overlooking the coastline, is a magical experience.”}The interiors are touted as “design hotel,” and by Dalmatian coast standards this is a modern place (part of the forward-thinking Adriatic Luxury Hotels group). But it couldn’t be called cutting-edge; expect blond wood floors, suede-look cubed sofas, driftwood sculptures and works by local artists (abstract oils and Pollock-style spatters).

If you’re as unlucky with the weather as I was, you’ll find that the indoor pool and spa are made for rainy days — lovely wicker daybeds surround a small pool and hot tub, and treatments are reasonably priced (from $54 for a facial). At Vapor, the seafood restaurant, and one of the best in Croatia, the food is as amazing as the views — think floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace overhanging Miramare Bay. If you don’t make it to dinner, you’ll be pleased to know that breakfast is also served there, so you get stonking views with your croissants in the morning.

Location-wise, the Bellevue enjoys the best of both worlds. The walk to the historic center of Dubrovnik may seem like a hassle — it’s a good 10 to 15 minutes, or a taxi ride — but the clifftop views as you walk to town make it all worthwhile. And the location — on the cliff edge of Miramare Bay — really comes into its own in summer. The hotel has its own pebbly beach (accessed via an elevator in the cliff), so it feels more like a posh resort. While other tourists sweat it out in cramped city center hotels, and historic Dubrovnik is swamped with cruise ship crowds, all you have to do is choose between the sea and the sun bed.

Not a warm welcome!

I have based my rating on how we were welcomed when we arrived at The Bellevue and the attitude of the reception staff during our 4 night stay.
Despite our taxi having dropped us off right outside the hotel there was no one to come and help us with our luggage which is not a big problem however the lady that signed us in at the hotel reception was particularly abrupt in manner which is a problem from a guests point of view.
We arrived at midday and had been travelling since 4am that day and her opening gambit was “welcome to Dubrovnik but as you are early your room is not ready so you have three options. You can sit in the bar, go to the beach or walk into the main town” we possibly looked slightly dazed so she repeated our options again as if addressing naughty children!
I had emailed the hotel ahead to request a room in a quiet area and the rude reception lady said that we had indeed been put in a quiet area of the hotel which was a big light at the end of the tunnel at this point however when we were woken up the very next morning at 6am by housekeeping crashing and banging outside our bedroom door that light rapidly began to fade. We had also been put next to a service lift which was noisy and we could clearly hear the main road from our room. I reported this to reception staff and they did send us a bottle of wine to apologise for the disturbance but when I thanked them but said that we don’t drink red wine they just left it in the room for the duration of our stay. Also the very next morning housekeeping were crashing about outside again at 6.30am so they did nothing to stop the disturbance.
We ate at the hotel restaurant and had a drink at the bar first. The next morning we realised that they had charged us for a cocktail that we did not have again not a big problem but when we told the rude reception lady her response was “well you signed for it” as if we were not telling the truth! She then went marching off to speak to the barman as she said that she could not correct this at reception and came back with a slightly different attitude and said that it had been taken care of.
Another day we got caught in a torrential downpour on our walk back to the hotel and as we entered the hotel looking like drowned rats the reception the staff looked at us as if we were from another planet. No smiles no rushing out with umbrellas that we have previously experienced on our travels just bland faces.
There is no doubt that this hotel has a fantastic outlook from its high position and the restaurant staff and bar staff are all very nice as are the breakfast waiters and waitresses but our overall impression of this hotel is that there is something missing which is a shame as it should be so much better.
We originally booked this hotel due to its great reviews but unfortunately and maybe we were unlucky our stay proved to be a complete contradiction to what we expected.
Dubrovnik is a beautiful town and well worth a visit. We still had a great trip despite our issues with the hotel as luckily for us we are always able to see the humour in these situations!

Fabulous Hotel with great vista

We visited Dubrovnik for a 4 day Break. Both My wife and I loved the city and this hotel. The views from our room were stunning. The hotel has use of a semi private beach which is a real bonus. The breakfast was excellent and the two dinners we eat in the hotel were first class.
We would happily return to Dubrovnik and this would be our first choice for a hotel in this area.

Absolutely fabulous

Beautiful hotel built into the cliffs overlooks the sea, lovely bedrooms with plenty of space and well appointed bathroom. Loved the spa warm pool and jacuzzi, lots of sunbeds to relax on. The outside sun terrace has sunbeds and has sun and shade all day long. The dinning area and bar were very relaxing and lovely with outside terraces where you can sit with a drink and watch the sunset. Great breakfast with something avaialble for everyone's taste, loved being able to sit outside on the terrace to eat. Close to the town and the views were breathtaking. Would definately go back.
