Boutique, angel-themed hotel for spa pampering and decadent cuisine near Costa Rica’s wild Pacific Coast
A celestial sanctuary in the tropics. Whatever oddities you might notice in the multilevel lobby — the classical white columns, the fiber optic planetarium dome and the stained glass butterfly sconces — angels are the point. Thousands of ceramic, wooden and gilded cherubs appear throughout the property, and some surfaces are painted to resemble a heavenly afternoon sky.
Bed and Bath
Each room is named for a different angel and decorated with imported furnishings, including golden duvets and lavish drapes. The top feature, though, is the balcony or patio, on which you can relax on a wicker chair and look out over the well-kept gardens and infinity pool; the Pacific is just visible in the distance. Bathrooms are equipped with regal granite sinks and large tubs, but the shower temperature and pressure can be temperamental.
The palapa-topped restaurant was constructed to mimic the ceremonial dwellings of Costa Rica’s indigenous Borucas, and dining in its open-air rotunda is a divine experience. A vast selection of international wines is expertly served in sturdy blue glassware, and the completely gluten free menu includes Spanish, Mediterranean and Italian dishes, served on floral ceramics from Mexico. I loved the trapiche Malbec with the beef carpaccio and then the ossobuco risotto. Downstairs, the pebble-studded spa and salon offers a raft of treatments, including the ever popular Angel’s Dream — a chocolate scrub and body wrap that includes a massage and a milk bath.
