Estate-style grace complemented by views of the Pacific, an award-winning restaurant and a private path to the beach
The hotel proudly displays its rich history, with photographs showcasing visits by such old Hollywood greats as Lucy and Desi Arnaz, Esther Williams and Bing Crosby (who helped open the nearby Del Mar racetrack). Most of the brown, celadon- and sand- colored furniture, textiles and accessories hail from the Barclay Butera Home collections and create the feel of a cozy designer showroom (part of the hotel’s $26 million renovation in 2009). A touch of whimsy: thousands of seashells flank the lobby’s Baroque consoles.
Bed & Bath
The mod, sea-inspired design in the 120 guest rooms is refreshing as a sea breeze; they come with village, garden or ocean views and have high ceilings, some even having gas fireplaces. Eight over-the-top suites deliver massive space and more sea and earth tones. Bathrooms are an escape of their own, with marble vanities and massive showers.
Just 25 minutes from the San Diego International Airport, in the beloved town of Del Mar, this beach chic escape is a towel’s toss (over a one-block landscaped footpath, that is) to the ocean. This is the heart of SoCal, so outdoor recreation is a big part of the experience; have a swing at one of two championship tennis courts or go for a swim in the pool, plus an outdoor whirlpool for recovering from all the activity. Hungry? Executive Chef Scott Thomas Dolbee oversees all the food, including the fresh and organic fare at Kitchen 1540, designed by New York architect Andre Kikoski and marked by an open kitchen and white vaulted ceilings.
