Mediterranean-style cool and over-the-top design make nice at this Dallas boutique
Off McKinney Avenue, straddling uptown and downtown Dallas, the Hotel ZaZa came onto the scene in 2002 and is still the city’s paragon of cool. The Mediterranean-inspired property bursts with eclectic artifacts from around the globe, from African tribal masks and Moroccan lanterns to sculptures and wine bottle chandeliers. It’s all a little over the top. But then, so is Dallas.
Bed and Bath
Standard rooms have a muted luxe look with upholstered, nailhead-trimmed headboards, workdesks with Eames chairs and Helmet Newton photographs. Themed suites are outrageous, all-out affairs—-the Shag-a-delic has shag carpets, a circular couch and lava lamps. The Far East? Elephant lamps, Asian lanterns and Chinoiserie fabrics. All rooms have marble bathrooms, Italian linens and rain showers.
The ZaSpa indulges with treatment rooms and fragrant products. The hotel’s Dragonfly restaurant is one of the most sought-after reservations in town, and the pool bar lounge has a heated patio beneath the stars during winter and a poolside party in the warmer months.
In the Area
The hotel’s location puts guests near uptown shopping and restaurants and downtown museums, theaters and bars. Tei-An serves upscale house-made soba and Chef Teiichi Sakurai’s stunning omakase menu as well as a long list of premier libations. Dallas is the birthplace of Neiman Marcus, but the city’s must-shop destination is Stanley Korshak, Big D’s version of Bergdorf Goodman. In need of culture? Dallas has invested serious dollars in its arts district, which now includes the Norman Foster–designed Winspear Opera House and Rem Koolhaas’s Wyly Theatre. Or get historical and peer through the actual window from which Lee Harvey Oswald fired at President John F. Kennedy at the Sixth Floor Museum.
