La Maltese Estate
What We Love
- The pool deck includes a terrace and an infinity pool
- An excellent on-site restaurant — one of the best on Santorini
- Free nightly tastings of local wines
What To Know
- The property is open seasonally from April through November
- The pool is quite small, as most are on Santorini
- Imerovigli is not as heavily traveled as other parts of Santorini; it’s a quiet getaway
- The hotel’s formal, classic French design can seem out of place on Santorini
- La Maltese is one of the few cliff hotels to welcome children
- Free WiFi
Set high atop Santorini’s caldera (820 feet above the Aegean, to be exact), La Maltese is housed in a 100-year-old neoclassical mansion off the tourist path in the lightly traveled town of Imerovigli. Relaxing comes high on the agenda, and a stay here is all about enjoying the nightly wine tastings on the outdoor deck, sunning yourself by the pool, and breakfasting alfresco on the balcony (breakfast is served until 3 p.m.). La Maltese lacks many standard hotel formalities, with no reception area or strict meal schedule, and the lobby-cum-living-room is dotted with antiques, oriental rugs and ornate mirrors, making the whole place feel like your own private villa. Each of its nine rooms are luxurious and elegant, with handmade four-poster beds and intricate gilt mirrors. The Honeymoon and Master Suites are as spacious as they are lavish; both split over two floors they come with their own private verandas with volcano views, while the Standard Double Room has a veranda with inland views. Of course, days here aren’t meant to be spent fully en chambre, and the hotel’s pool deck has a terrace, gorgeous infinity pool, and plenty of loungers for lazing the afternoon away. Then there’s the spa, with its indoor heated Jacuzzi, hammam, sauna, jet showers, relaxation area and experienced therapists. After you’ve rested up, you can get out and explore Santorini in style. The staff can arrange a car to the best beaches, or a private yacht charter. When your day is done and you’re enjoying the fiery sunset, it’s easy to see why this island has enchanted travelers for centuries.
How to Get There
Our stay in La Maltese Estate was not what we expected. The roomservice was very bad (no refill of water, glasses) and the room was very basic (no hooks for hanging clothes). The staff was friendly but not well trained (waiter takes orders without writing it down and mixes up or forgets most of it). The food and drinks in the restaurant and bar are outrageously high (1 beer 28€!!). Overall disappointing!
My sister booked this venue for her wedding and our family booked an entire block of rooms/suites for her wedding. I paid 5 star price for a 2 star suite, except a 2 star suite would not smell like poop like my room and my friend's room did. It reeked of the foul smell throughout my entire stay. I keep calling in for service and they would spray the toilet but every few hours the smell would come back. My suite consist of an upstairs and downstairs and there was one weak and sometimes not running air conditioner that service both and if you close the door for privacy, you would feel suffocated. They were always doing some kind of construction or servicing because it was always noisy. My friends could sleep because they put her somewhere near the kitchen and they would make so much nosy coming in and out to dump the trash or carry supplies in.
When I checked out of my room, I complained to the manager about the foul smell in my room. He insisted that can't be the case because he had someone unclog the system a few days before our group checked in. I told him that the problem was not resolved when I checked in and continued throughout the whole stay. Then he shifted from denying there's a problem to say that the problem was me. I shouldn't have put the toilet paper in the toilet which would clog it up. So let me get this straight...I'm supposed to leave my dirty toilet paper in the trash can after during #2 in a 5 star hotel?! Then when I told him that the problem was there before I got there because my friends and I reported the smell when we first checked in, he said that even though I didn't personally contribute to the problem if everyone else in the hotel put their toilet paper down the toilet, then it would impact the entire system. So now I'm responsible for making sure that everyone else on this property don't put their toilet paper down the toilet to ensure that I would have to sleep with my nose plugged? Wow, just wow. As you can see from my picture and video attached, it's very noisy there because there's always a septic tank in front of the property. One of my friends lost two days of sleep because of the noise and had to find another property to stay in. Originally, the manager said he would refund the night she didn't stay there. But after I made the complaint about my room smelling like poop, he decided he wasn't going to refund any money at all. So she's out of the refund that was promised to her and had to fork out more money to book another hotel room for the last night we were there. The receptionist there are nice but very slow at times. Overall, I would not recommend this place because of the foul smell in the bathroom and how the manager handled the entire situation.
My husband and I stayed at La Maltese in Imerovigli from Nov 27-29,2018
The receptionists, manager and all the staff were very friendly. They provided us directions, arranged taxi and private tour for us.
They also spoke to restaurants in their language to get us food delivered and upgraded us to a room with Jacuzzi and view.
The view was amazing and Jacuzzi was perfect for the weather!
My wife and I (originally from the US) had our wedding at La Maltese in Imerovigli in May 2018 and it was the best decision we could have made! Every single detail from the walk through a few days before, to the ceremony, reception, food, drinks, and even after-party exceeded our expectations. The level of service and attention to detail was incredible. Bertolis and the entire staff (including the bartenders) know how to throw the most epic party to remember. Not to mention, we had never met them before our wedding so had to trust that they would execute every detail we outlined ... and they did!
The food was amazing and the sunset views are the best in Santorini. We can't recommend La Maltese highly enough if you're looking to host your wedding, or even just stay there on holiday. Well worth the money. You won't regret it! Thank you to everyone at La Maltese for making our wedding the best weekend of our lives!
I was preveleged to attend a Greek American wedding in Santorini at hotel La Malteze in Imerovigli. The daughter of my best friend was getting married. Born and raised in USA I would never believe that I could have in Greece this level of service. I cannot possibly say enough for the food , the staff for our 3 days stay. Also I cannot say enough for their amazing wedding planner Marrymeingreece. The owner of this small boutique destination wedding company was on top of everything, She arranged the pre wedding welcome dinner, everything for the wedding day and also planed a magnificent catamaran tour. Everything on time no delays , even she manage to arrange lasy minute request for extra more persons arriving for the wedding . Congratulations to all. Keep up the good work Greece!!!
