How to Get There
My wife and I just returned from a 7 day stay at Carpe Diem. We were totally blown away by the experience - the accommodation and the service wowed us in equal measure; a true 10/10 experience.
Upon arrival at the gates, the owner Sotiris and the concierge Lefteris, greeted us with happy, smiling faces. Our bags were taken to our room whilst Sotiris proudly escorted us along the private promenade, past the shared infinity pool overlooking the breathtaking, north-facing island views, just as the serene, red and orange sun was setting to the west - all the while telling us about the resort and conversing with us in perfect English. After a short, but relaxed walk of about 100 m, we arrived at the exclusive restaurant where another couple were enjoying a romantic Michelin starred evening meal, whilst light jazz played quietly over the resort's speaker system. We were seated at the bar and immediately served a welcome glass of rosé and canapés.
After a few formalities (passports, credit card etc), we were escorted to our room by Lefteris who - in broken, yet perfectly understandable English, talked us through the unique features of each room as we passed them. Each one had a small, private, heated pool, dual sun loungers and an outside seating area for two. He stopped outside the "Dea" Suite - apparently one of the largest on the island - explaining that it was designed to pay tribute to the beauty of women - Dea meaning "Goddess" in Greek. We had booked the 85m sq. Alba suite, but much to our surprise, Lefteris told us that we had been upgraded to this 120m sq. suite, featuring a boudoir, walk-in wardrobe and complimentary Apivita cosmetics. To say we were shocked was an understatement!
We had arrived quite late in the evening and were quite hungry, so decided to eat at the resort's restaurant. The food was divine - and for its quality and the level of service we received, not too pricey at all. It was fine dining at its best, easily comparable to Michelin starred restaurants we have eaten in in the UK.
The minimalist design of the resort and its rooms is both elegant and beautiful, and the view is captivating (all rooms face the same direction, as does the restaurant and bar). You can see the north tip of the caldera, but the resort is certainly not able to claim a "caldera view" - not that it does! In my opinion, the view we had was infinitely more interesting than looking out to sea / out at the caldera, though your mileage will vary.
The location of the resort was perfect for us, though it might not be the best for those looking for more "action". Its extremely quiet (spoiled only by the occasional ATV / motorbike revving past on the road about 500 m below the resort - hardly a nuisance), hidden well away from the hustle and bustle of even Pyrgos (which is infinitely quieter than Fira and Oia), and secured by a gate and high walls. There are a few other slightly less exclusive resorts on the same road, but nothing in front of it - so it is extremely private. The nearest off-site restaurant is less than 1km away - about a 10 minute walk. It's about 15 minutes to the local market and center of Pyrgos - we walked there most days without much effort, and Pyrgos itself is well worth a day out to explore. Be prepared to walk up a very steep hill every time you leave the resort on foot, though! You can always rent a car or get a taxi if you don't fancy the short hike in to the village.
We booked in a couples spa treatment during the week. Whilst the spa room itself is very relaxing, the sauna and jacuzzi are amazing, and the whole experience was enjoyable, the experience lacked for only one reason - there was only one therapist available. This meant my wife and I had to take it in turns to have our therapies. We have had similar treatments in the past which have been performed by two therapists simultaneously, so our expectations were different from the reality. I’m not sure if this is always the case at Carpe Diem, or if it was because we visited right at the start of the summer season, but it would have been slightly nicer if we were treated at the same time. This is literally my only criticism of the whole week there, though.
We had one issue with our room during the stay - the shower door hinge was coming loose and seemed quite dangerous; I reported it to Sofia and it was fixed the next day. I expect the previous few guests had failed to report it as one screw was missing and the other was very loose. Either way it was fixed to a high standard and is now safe for future guests!
Check-out was just as amazing as check-in. Our flight was at 20:30, so we had a lot of time to fill during our last day. We were allowed to stay in the room until 12pm, though we could have had the room longer if they weren't booked up. We decided to visit the new Lost Atlantis Experience in Megalochori and eat at Feggera restaurant, then walked back to Pyrgos down a dirt track; when we got back to Carpe Diem at around 18:00, we were quite sweaty and dirty, so Sotiris kindly suggested we use the spa to shower to freshen up before our flight. We were even given two complimentary drinks each (rosé and prosecco) before we left. Carpe Diem provides a level of hospitality and excellence that we have only experienced in one or two other places in the world before now.
We are not a particularly demanding couple, but we felt utterly pampered - every single member of staff was amazing, from the owner to the cleaning lady (who arranged my wife's foulards into pretty patterns on the bed whilst we were exploring the island, conversed with us on multiple occasions, and closely admired my wife's knitting!). Lefteris deserves a special mention - he was extremely friendly and amiable, and gave us many suggestions that we explored, from visiting the Symposion in Megalochori to booking a semi-private traditional boat cruise of the caldera. He attended to our every request with vigour and professionalism, and even humoured my truly awful attempts at speaking Greek!
Santorini is a holiday I will never forget, and the staff at Carpe Diem were instrumental in the composition of the memories we have created. Thank you to everyone, if we come back to Santorini, I cannot see us wanting to stay anywhere else!
Can’t rate this place enough. The location is perfect, off the beaten track in busy Santorini. Incredible welcome - massage and wine. What else could you ask for? The room was beyond incredible, heated pool, peace and quiet. The staff were exceptional. If you get the chance, visit here, you won’t regret it!
We stayed 3 nights at Carpe Diem and we were absolutely thrilled with every aspect of the resort. Our room was spacious, clean and well equipped. The views from our balcony were fantastic. The breakfast is top notch with a wonderful selection and it is ala carte (no buffet!) We also had dinner at the resort and the food was wonderfully prepared and delicious. The complimentary massage was fantastic as well. Lastly, we can't say enough great things about the staff. They were so friendly and gracious and went out of their way to make our vacation the very best that it could be. They made great recommendations for restaurants, wine tasting, cooking class and also assisted with transportation. We had a wonderful time and would recommend Carpe Diem to anyone that wants luxury and relaxation in Santorini!
This is such an amazing location. The staff are so friendly and have some great recommendations of where to visit. The restaurant is superb and always serves up a gastronomic delight. We will definitely be visiting again I can’t recommend highly enough.
Where to start, we booked this honeymoon retreat last year and have been looking forward to it ever since. I am delighted to say that it did not disappoint.
We arrived at Carpe Diem at around 22:00 where we were greeted by the owner Sotiris and some of his wonderful team. They quickly whisked away our bags and sat us down with a glass of wine and some beautiful canapés. We were then led to our absolutely stunning upgraded suite. The suite is one of the largest suites in the whole of Santorini with a comfy king size bed with pillow menu, a huge bath with luxury toiletries, stunning heated swimming pool and plush, comfy sun beds. We honestly could not have asked for more from our room. It was just perfection. The view was just stunning and we spent many a morning/evening just staring at the gorgeous santorini towns and villages.
The room service menu had a veal burger, club sandwich and much more. Which became firm favourites when we didn’t want to venture out.
The key thing that sets carpe diem out from the crowd is the amazing staff that are always focusing on the little things that make your stay special. They booked a sunset cruise for us and when we arrived back our whole terrace was covered in candles with a bottle of fizz. Those touches meant so much and made our honeymoon truly memorable. If you have any questions about places to eat or visit, go and speak to reception, they have some amazing recommendations.
Every single detail down to the taxi firm they used being mini tour guides, to a glass of fizz on checkout, to Anna one of the many wonderful members staff giving you a blanket when it got a bit cooler in the evening. It became much more than a hotel to us and we will definitely be coming back.
I cannot thank Sotiris, Sofia and the team for providing our fairytale honeymoon.
