What We Love

  • Myriad options of quarter-, half- and full-day tours of the ancient Inca empire
  • Thermostat-controlled heated stone floors
  • Handmade toiletries and textiles that support local communities
  • The suites’ colors, murals and stone accessories reflect Cusco’s history
  • Seriously clean — housekeeping stops by 3 times a day
  • To explore Machu Picchu, check out Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo; to experience the Amazon, visit Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

What To Know

  • The front entrance is a large unmarked door on Plaza de las Nazarenas
  • As in most of Peru, WiFi can be patchy and slow
  • Given a size of 11 suites, room service is limited
  • Cusco stands at more than 11,000 feet, so altitude sickness is a possibility

Overview

The Review
Behind the stone walls of Cusco’s charming and revered Plaza de las Nazarenas, Inkaterra La Casona doubles as a modern boutique hotel and a living museum. The 11-suite two-story Spanish mansion is registered as a national historic monument, a well-preserved link to Cusco’s pre-Columbian past and colonial history. Surrounding a verdant inner courtyard, the palatial suites and regal common areas combine Spanish architecture with Incan structural elements and baroque colonial furniture with Incan textiles and locally handcrafted products.{"type":"img-inline","src":"/static/images/product/properties/editorialreviews/9750/pgal-49934-1287699542-full.jpg","width":"275","caption":"The 11-suite Inkaterra embodies the architectural styles of both the Incan and Spanish empires."} Cusco’s mystical quality is omnipresent within the confines of La Casona. The patterns, the colors, the murals, the stone columns, the ubiquitous antiques and the intricate minutiae of La Casona create a desire to learn more about the varied history of this manor house. While a cultural cornucopia beckons outside the hotel’s towering doors, returning to La Casona between or after ambles through Plaza de Armas, excursions to the Sacred Valley or pilgrimages to Machu Picchu constitutes a welcome extension of social immersion. To please the modern traveler, the hotel is equipped with five-star creature comforts that don’t compromise the stylish sophistication or historical authenticity of Inkaterra. More than just technologically savvy, the suites at La Casona have stone fireplaces, separate dining areas and comfy nailhead upholstered beds with traditional Peruvian accessories. The oversize marble and stone bathrooms merit hours of relaxation time, soaking in the tub with locally made bath salts or indulging in a powerful rain-shower massage using handmade shower products. The house butler graciously awaits any and all requests you may have during your stay and the intimate house spa is just a few steps from your suite. The restaurant is for hotel guests only, preparing daily Peruvian breakfast feasts to get you ready to take on the day.
